I was also stuck on #1...it is a synonym for what you think, but not the more common ones; don't do what I was doing...the word you subtract from is in the second part of the answer not the first...and don't let the letter from #8 fool you, it's going to be a sound it out thing, not spelling...hope this doesn't confuse more than helps

[8]the first pic is an atmospheric phenomenon that I would usually call something more recognizable.

personally I have been VERY close to the tornado and waterspout kind.
