Something wrong with this puzzle? The lengths of the clues don't match up.

  2. FileOnionzyrilia on Jun 07, 2011 07:03 PM

    Woohoo! 14th!

[1] Perhaps you're using the wrong part.

Got it now, thanks [3]. 94th. Having a lot of problems with the puzzles tonight.

WooHoo #100 (the first time for that particular honor!)

    Fun, Thanks, Sonja!

[8] You can send me your list for a spell check if you'd like.

[6] I never put it together that sonjahi was someone named sonja... wild. Then again, she thought I was an old man with 8 inch eyebrows! Funny how easy it is to hide behind our avatars and screen names, even when hiding in plain sight.

    Nice triptych tonight, btw

    Had to look up 9 & 10.

I started to put in the other word, then realized there weren't enough letters. LOL!

This almost makes up for the OWW that I can't get. But not quite.

    Cute one!

A couple took a few seconds, but none were what you might call hard.

Got my Strawberry with this one! Enjoyed my a-ha moment too (with a bit of a face-palm in it!) LOL

Okay, I really like this puzzle and I want to tell you why. And when I say "tell you" what I really mean is "mostly tell both current and future puzzlemakers."

I think this is a fun idea. Philana essentially did this the *other* way around last year (http://www.tanga.com/crossword_puzzles/1425-1-5-2010), and what's great to me about both of these Hypers is that every clue is ID'd.

I know there are some of you out there who grumble when one of us Mods kicks a puzzle back to you with some form of the note "...and please ID your image(s)" thinking that adding an image ID tag makes your puzzle too easy or seem less fun... and sure, there are times when that *might* be the case...

But I really think this Hyper shows why it's the correct way to go.

Yeah, you could, if you wanted to, Google every one of these and get the answers. But likely you didn't. Or maybe you had to for one or two of them, but this puzzle essentially DARED you to solve it WITHOUT looking anything up.

Because it was SOLVABLE on its own.

And that's why it's fun, IMO. Because you *can* look up the answer if you need to... but you don't *want* to need to.

This is very different, by the way, from puzzles that are, in fact, Google-fests. Puzzles that are based around themes that are crazy narrow, or puzzles where the clues themselves are just straight-up image recognition. Or - yipes - both of these things.

Sonjahi has actually given you something to "solve" here. Something that's also, IMO, kind of a neat theme. And the puzzle isn't any "dumber" or "less fun" or "too easy" because she tagged all of her images. I'll bet, in fact, that a lot of you needed some of those tags to solve a few of these. And that's the beauty of it: you can try as long as you care to... and then, if you're done trying, you can just "get" the answer.

[16] Darnitt Arnott, I was going to post that exact same comment, word for word, but you beat me to the punch! :-Þ

Seriously though, nice puzzle sonjahi; it was pleasant & enjoyable. I'm glad the tags were there because without it I would have had to tineye #10 (nothing to really 'solve' if you're never heard of / seen someone before)

    Three Rocking Puzzles!

    Yay for sonjahi!

Five star Phun, perfect difficulty. Thank you for a very Phun puzzle.

  20. FileAppledennishiding on Jun 09, 2011 04:37 PM

[16] Indeed, I would have given up on this puzzle without the tags. A good number of the images I would not have placed even with the animal hint. I was happy that I recognized a few and that made it clear what to do with the ones I didn't.

    Thanks Sonja

  21. Christopher_david_ryan_-_eyeGarlickc6201 on Jun 09, 2011 06:37 PM

When you say the images are "tagged" are you referring to the animals that are included? Because the file names of the images just say "clue1", "clue2", etc.

  22. FileAppledennishiding on Jun 10, 2011 09:56 AM

[21] I interpretted "tagged" as meaning that they images have identifying text information included in the image that allows you to lookup the needed information even if you do not recognize the personality presented in the image. Rather than just showing an image of someone you assume everyone will recognize and leaving those that are not familliar with the personality no other recourse to solve the puzzle.

This may be getting confused with tagging such as when certain phones/cameras add data for geolocation, time, date or other source information about an image, that can later be extracted with appropriate tools.

  23. Christopher_david_ryan_-_eyeGarlickc6201 on Jun 10, 2011 07:49 PM

[22] Ah, I see now! The tagging did sure help with #3 and #10. #4-7 I wouldn't have instantly recognized, but I think the animals would have been enough for me to figure it out.
