#1 is pointing to Cardinal de Richelieu....
Oh, now that was fun! Good job, Sammie!
I am soooo lost.
[3], be sure to look at the title of the hypercross.
[3] The title tells you what to do.
I agree, Richelieu is highlighted in answer #1 and it doesn't fit. However, if you get the theme and know the characters, you can piece that clue together. Overall, a fun puzzle. Thank you!
[6] Yeah, I knew what the puzzle was looking for; it just kind of bothered me that not only was the intended person not pointed to, he isn't even in the entire picture!
Top to bottom, left to right, I see Richelieu, Constance, Milady, Aramis, Athos, and Porthos. But no ... you know.
[7] Actually, I don't know. I mean, I do, but I don't because I don't know any of them. In truth, I was starting to get frustrated because even though I got the theme right away, I couldn't positively identify a majority of the pictures. Some were because it was a long day and I was tired and knew the answer but couldn't bring the word to mind, others (like the one you are talking about), I flat-out didn't know. And I didn't feel like Googling.
But then, the rest of the theme fell into place for me (before I got to the last clue) and I was able to go back to the beginning and get them all - no Google. Which was really nice. So, nice job, sammydb!
[4] [5] Thanks for that nudge. Got it.
[7] eww, amazing what a little assuming and a simple 3 musketeers search does to you. sorry about the confusion and error! really bad, sorry!
[10] Certainly understandable. I'm not familiar with that picture, but I've had a life-long love of the Three Musketeers and recently read all 5 books of the 2 Musketeer trilogies (that's kind of an interesting story in itself) that Dumas wrote. So even though they're kind of caricatures, it's clear which character each is -- if you're familiar with their personalities.
Frankly, I'm surprised that "he" is missing from a picture showcasing the primary characters of the story.
We have some serious musketeer fans here!
And you can type the answer to# 9 with only your left hand.
A true work of ....!
Loved It!
bcgrote gave me the kick in the head I needed to figure out the theme! Thanks!
Fun puzzle, but I'd have liked to see the 'meta clue' as a stand alone answer (off to the side) rather than incorporated into the grid. Since the grid gives you the first and last of the three letters you don't really have to follow the intended process to complete it, which is a shame since it's such a cool clue.

That was a little too easy lol
Agree [11], like others, I've read the book and I definitely placed the picture as the character showing (and not the one that was intended), so it threw the puzzle off until the next clue
