Wow, I finally got the a-ha moment after I completed the entire puzzle. Really funny though

  2. FileAceYawetag on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:09 PM

Got them, but can't figure out the topic.

  3. Tog6Pumpkinprincessproton on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:13 PM

[1] Can't get top across...I hope that doesn't mean all my answers are wrong.

Edit: Got it, just couldn't remember it apparently.

  4. FileEggplantHackmaster12 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:11 PM

OK... I still don't get the theme, and "Australia" doesn't fit in the boxes...

  5. FileBananaethnosax on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:12 PM

Took me a loooong time to figure out the theme with this one. Not at all in my sphere of interests. And it took me many minutes to figure out why Australia isn't Australia (technically, the entire country is not what the answer is, but people will get it anyway, eventually).

  6. FileEggplantHackmaster12 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:13 PM

    [3] Remember it...

  7. Avatar_profileRocketgreenie on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:13 PM

The topic is orthogonal, at best.

When do you want to get a 300? That will help with the Australia one too.

  8. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:14 PM

    [3] Think San Antonio.

There's some kind of selection thing for these tonight, I think...

  9. FileBananaethnosax on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:14 PM

[3] I can tell you there's no basement there, that's for sure.

[4] That one makes me hungry for steaks.

  10. FileEggplantHackmaster12 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:16 PM

[9] Mmmmmm... Steak.... That did it.

  11. FileStrawberrywarghoul on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:21 PM

I'm stuck on the alligator one....unless of course I have others wrong...any salt?

    edit...had a word spelled wrong......got it!

  12. Avatar_12-08Pancakesthreehojos on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:19 PM

Salt for second to last down? City in lights?

  13. FileStrawberrywarghoul on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:20 PM

    you said it....city in lights....

  14. FilePotatoDrParty06 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:20 PM

[11] no you have that one exactly right.

  15. FileGrapesdragonsgaze on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:23 PM

[12] I bet if you think hard enough you can get it

  16. FileEggplantHackmaster12 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:24 PM

    [15] I bet you're right.

  17. Avatar_12-08Pancakesthreehojos on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:25 PM

Got all the answers but the theme escapes me.....

  18. FileRadishmhuber on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:25 PM

[9] Steak did it for me as well...Thanks!

  19. FileAceYawetag on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:26 PM

Okay. I know one instance when I want to get a 300 (my dad does it professionally). However, as far as I can tell, none of the answers have anything to do with it. If someone would like to message me the theme, I'd be delighted. Thanks!

  20. FileGarlicHope2002 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:28 PM

I answered them all and I have no idea what the theme is.

  21. Avatar_profileGrapeswarbanner on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:30 PM

I wouldn't say "getting a 300" quite fits with the theme, unless I'm missing a newish phrase (I did this for ten years growing up and never heard that phrase).

Anyway, if you can't get the theme, try again on New Year's Day.

  22. FileGarlicmartinp13 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:32 PM

Wow... can't believe the topic is that foreign to so many people. I had it after the first across and the longest down. Good timing on this one.

If you can answer them all and not get the theme, do the usual.

  23. FileBananaArchangel on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:37 PM

Am i the only one who hasn't gotten the Austrailia one with this being rated one star?

  24. English_d_betterApplemrdehate on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:41 PM

Most of the clues were easy enough that I didn't care about the theme, until the Australia one. [8] tipped me off to the theme, then it was cake from there.

  25. FileGarlicHope2002 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:42 PM

Someone told me the theme. It is something I am familiar with, but I don't know what it has to do with 300.

  26. Interlocking_nyRadishNiner on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:46 PM

I'm having trouble w/ the alligator and the gem.

  27. Interlocking_nyRadishNiner on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:47 PM

just got the theme and the puzzle, thanks to all!

  28. AvatarSailboatjjcool on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:47 PM

[21] "getting a 300" most definitely has to do with the theme of the puzzle. They are both the same word.

  29. Img_0189Egggst on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:48 PM

that last clue was just right...

  30. AvatarSailboatjjcool on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:48 PM

[26] think briefly about he first, then look again at the picture of the second.

  31. Avatar_profileGrapeswarbanner on Sun Dec 02, 2007 07:54 PM

[28] NOW I get it. I was thinking of the general activity in the theme, not the specific theme, which then relates to the name of an OTHER activity where getting a 300 is ideal.

  32. FileRocketxandryyte on Sun Dec 02, 2007 08:22 PM

    I finally solve a Hypercross!!! :D :)

  33. FileRaspberryMarkel on Sun Dec 02, 2007 08:45 PM

Solved it (with a bit of help from a crossword solver for the Australia clue), but I still don't see the theme.

[edit] plugged a few of the answers together into google, and I see the theme now.

  34. FileEggplantjtotheh on Sun Dec 02, 2007 08:45 PM

Well, I finally got it, no thanks to the title, which I didn't understand until a good ten minutes after solving.

  35. FileStrawberrycmabratte on Sun Dec 02, 2007 08:47 PM

woo i got it, first hypercross, with a little help from the gf on what that red and green flower was.

  36. Avatar_profileBananafratzkehw on Sun Dec 02, 2007 08:56 PM

Thanks! Your clue led me right down the proper alley!

  37. Avatar_profilePeachMrballiwhoo on Sun Dec 02, 2007 08:59 PM

i have no idea on the long one down, any help

  38. Bear_and_meKiwigordon1018 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 08:59 PM

I liked that, and poignant too

  39. Avatar_profilePeachMease19 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 09:18 PM

I am so lost. I get the theme, I think I have all the answers right. They're spelled right. What am I doing wrong?

  40. FileGrapesSneezy96 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 09:42 PM

The only one I don't have is the white building. Could I get some salt please???

  41. Avatar_profilePeachMease19 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 09:47 PM

Is there something that isn't obvious?

  42. FileGrapesSneezy96 on Sun Dec 02, 2007 10:00 PM

[37] It's rather popular this time of year.

  43. Avatar_profileGrapesmbjork on Sun Dec 02, 2007 10:00 PM

    37 see them during Christmas

  44. FilePepperdajagr on Sun Dec 02, 2007 10:03 PM

Ouch. I count the title a serious red herring. I don't know enough about the actual topic of the puzzle to recognize the entries, so I was thinking that somehow the terms had to do with the 300 activity, rather than what they actually are.

  45. FilePepperdajagr on Sun Dec 02, 2007 10:04 PM

    [40] I had some salt, but I can't remember...

  46. Avatar_profileApplekswitz on Sun Dec 02, 2007 11:02 PM

got the theme after two answers but it took a second to make the connection to the title. took even longer to get the points, as I apparently don't know how to spell.

  47. Tornado_warningSailboatandythewxman on Sun Dec 02, 2007 11:58 PM

    Too easy

  48. FileBananasoftball80 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 12:28 AM

    tis the season...

  49. Sc002a57f6Pumpkinrunart on Mon Dec 03, 2007 03:02 AM

We made it to the first across this year. "WE ARE....."

  50. Avatar_profileGrapesmelantha on Mon Dec 03, 2007 05:35 AM

Still can't get the croc or the Australia clue... Salt, please?? :)

  51. OtakuavatarPeachalysedai on Mon Dec 03, 2007 05:37 AM

I got the puzzle...just still can't understand the theme...

    blargh.

Maybe I don't participate in that activity enough...the only reason I go to that place is for karaoke.

  52. Avatar_profilePearKillians1978 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 05:51 AM

Touchdown! Finally solved it! [33] was the biggest help of all. You'll still need a few of the answers to get you going. Perhaps the saltiest clue out there!

  53. Avatar_profilePearKillians1978 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 05:53 AM

Oh, and for the record, the theme is a facepalm when you give it a couple seconds to sink in.

  54. FileKiwijgoewert on Mon Dec 03, 2007 06:41 AM

    Got the theme...

Without giving the theme outright, go get some cereal and pay attention to what you put it in...

Not really an interest for me, so I still don't know what 300 means in relation to it.

  55. FileGarlicHope2002 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 07:05 AM

The theme is completely misleading. It has to do with something that is radically different than the actual subject except for the fact that at a certain time of year one uses a form of the name of the other. It's a stretch. The answers themselves were easy. I just can't figure out why such an easy puzzle would need such a stretch for a title.

  56. Avatar_profileGrapesmelantha on Mon Dec 03, 2007 07:18 AM

[54] Thank you. And I don't get the theme, either.

  57. FileGrapesHEDWARDS0006 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 07:40 AM

    Awesome

  58. BradStrawberryVante on Mon Dec 03, 2007 07:49 AM

It's understandable that people aren't seeing the connection, most of these names have been lost to the corporate sponsors.

  59. Avatar_profilePearKillians1978 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 08:04 AM

I'll explain the theme in the BGG thread, since this puzzle's been up for a number of hours already.

  60. FileBananatheChony on Mon Dec 03, 2007 08:31 AM

[9] One of the greatest movies. Funniest part when they wake him, "What do you remember?" "I remember..." Then they all cheer.

  61. FileOnionimapuzzl on Mon Dec 03, 2007 08:40 AM

The name of the puzzle isn't that much of a stretch. It's an oft used pun in a particular section of the newspaper during this time of year. Couldn't have been a more appropriate day to run this one.

The only thing that could be better would have been to include the participants. (Oh-oh. Is that the sound of people rushing to their keyboards?)

  62. Avatar_profilePotatoDC3 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 08:42 AM

A winning record could get you in one

  63. Rudyard040731bAppleradiotalent on Mon Dec 03, 2007 08:57 AM

Fun puzzle...I agree with the thought that the title was a bit of a stretch...I'd have preferred something more porcine for instance.

  64. Avatar_profileGrapessigmazero13 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 09:13 AM

After I finally "got" the theme (after I got the puzzle itself), I still think the title is a stretch.

Sure, it equates to the same word, but a word with such disjointed meanings in this context that it doesn't really help with the puzzle at all :)

  65. FileBananatheChony on Mon Dec 03, 2007 09:19 AM

Maybe everyone here are nerds.(btw I own a life size replica of a certain scoundrel in carbonite) I knew the theme when I read the title on the link. This would be all you hear about in the news today and I am no fan.

  66. Avatar_profileWatermelonMcDick on Mon Dec 03, 2007 09:27 AM

The title is a bit of a pun.

  67. FilePlumTIMMAY on Mon Dec 03, 2007 09:36 AM

    Mmmm, no Armed Forces...too bad.

  68. Avatar_profileGrapesshrapnel on Mon Dec 03, 2007 10:39 AM

Cool puzzle once the theme appears. I thought it was kind of hum-drum until then. I had to wiki-guess a couple of the answers; the theme-related pastime is something with which I have no contact.

  69. FilePotatoDrParty06 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 10:45 AM

    [49] ...PENN STATE.

  70. FilePlumhistorysteph on Mon Dec 03, 2007 10:56 AM

    [69] THANK YOU...

  71. FilePlumhistorysteph on Mon Dec 03, 2007 11:09 AM

I have everything except the crocodile... any salt?

  72. Avatar_profileCherriescburns102 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 11:15 AM

    My first Hypercross!! Yeah!

  73. FileBananatheChony on Mon Dec 03, 2007 11:56 AM

[71] Use a different word, and shorten it.

  74. Avatar_profileLemonFrozenHoHos on Mon Dec 03, 2007 12:16 PM

I must have a spelling error somewhere. Checked it twice and it still won't take.

  75. FileApplebandel on Mon Dec 03, 2007 12:18 PM

Got the theme. Thought I got all the clues, but I'm not a "freaking genius". Is something spelled incorrectly? (I looked up the floral one as most likely to be misspelled, but I got it right.)

  76. FileAppleFez on Mon Dec 03, 2007 12:43 PM

I'm certain I'm correct. So why is it saying I'm not. Can I submit my answers somewhere? Is there a goofy spelling in this?

  77. FileBananatheChony on Mon Dec 03, 2007 12:58 PM

I see they're trying a new format, loving it, but I can't see where the clues go. My answers which I already got points for aren't working either.

  78. Avatar_profileStrawberrysujihime on Mon Dec 03, 2007 01:11 PM

I got it before I got the theme, which...hurr..of course. But it won't take my answers and everything is spelled right.

  79. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Mon Dec 03, 2007 01:25 PM

[77] Ditto - it seems to me (with my faulty memory), that the orange clue was plural last night, not enough letters today...

-no- my memory must be faulty...

  80. FilePlumsjlee on Mon Dec 03, 2007 01:37 PM

Something is definitely screwed up. I have all of them correct, and I still get no points. :(

  81. Pic111083_lgPearmr_jack on Mon Dec 03, 2007 01:38 PM

the same thing is happening to me

  82. Avatar_profilePlumsamus on Mon Dec 03, 2007 01:42 PM

I know the theme, and I'm looking at all the spellings on wikipedia. I am 100% with all of them. Why won't it take my answers?

  83. FilePlumlseelba on Mon Dec 03, 2007 01:43 PM

I think this hypercross is broken. I have all clues spelled correctly, and checked wikipedia to see they are all valid. It's not taking it. BOO!

  84. Avatar_profileOrangebhasden on Mon Dec 03, 2007 01:46 PM

Same here. I got it right away too. That's the first. I could've actually placed decently.

  85. FilePlumworkerbee on Mon Dec 03, 2007 01:59 PM

Might as well add mine as well - checked, double-checked, and triple-checked all the spellings, but it's not accepting it.

  86. Avatar_profileGarlicmagicode on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:01 PM

Same here - something's messed up.

  87. FileGrapesaux_con on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:08 PM

Same with me... I want my 20!!! =(

  88. Avatar_profileStrawberryGreggM on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:14 PM

In the same boat as many others... I think I have them all right, and it's telling me I'm incorrect. Is it broken?

  89. FileStrawberrykytty713 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:19 PM

Glad to hear it's not just me...I just spell checked sun thinking I was going completely mad

  90. FileStrawberrykytty713 on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:19 PM

    [89][90]Hilarious.

  92. SmalloldvelvetnoseRocketsdharing on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:30 PM

ditto . . . all spellings double-checked. I'm so old-fashioned I even used a print dictionary! But no love from the puzzle.

  93. FileGrapesaux_con on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:33 PM

I even tried los and las AAAARGH! Son? maybe =P
    Sanity is slipping!!!

Elhp! or I mya strat spleelling poorlee!

  94. Dave5Grapessaintomer on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:36 PM

I also would like my 20! That's 10 minutes of triple-checking answers for spelling that I would also like back!

  95. FilePlumsjlee on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:38 PM

I just tried an old hypercross and got the same results... must be the new format that broke it.

  96. FileKiwiHokumDigital on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:48 PM

    Are you going MAD?

  97. FileKiwiHokumDigital on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:47 PM

    ARE you going mad?

  98. FileKiwiHokumDigital on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:48 PM

Me too. Point us when it gets sorted out, yeah?

  99. Avatar_profileGrapesKtCallista on Mon Dec 03, 2007 02:51 PM

wow, I wonder when this will be fixed, I never have time to do the puzzles, so when I was able to sit down and just do this one so fast I was really psyched!

  100. Avatar_profilePeachFrogilla on Mon Dec 03, 2007 04:21 PM

It broke from me too. I doubled checked all spellings and still says its wrong.
