Got the theme, but these are tough!

  2. AssetsPancakesepaz on Dec 09, 2007 07:27 PM

"Fountain-Mountain-Hairy Guy" is my favorite game ever!!!!

  3. AssetsPancakesepaz on Dec 09, 2007 07:28 PM

(in my excitement, it posted twice!)

  4. AssetsTomatoMurdoctor on Dec 09, 2007 07:29 PM

These are quite tough... and some are REAL stretches.

  5. AssetsGarlicHope2002 on Dec 09, 2007 07:32 PM

I thought it was "Fountain-Mountain-Hairy guy on a Couch" no wonder I didn't get it!

  6. AssetsRocketBerix on Dec 09, 2007 07:33 PM

Can we change our in-house term of "Salt" to "Fountain-Mountain-Hairy Guy"? It has quite a ring to it.

  7. AssetsGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Dec 09, 2007 07:35 PM

Excuse me, I need some Fountain-mountain-hairy-guy on the you're fired clue..

Yup! Has a nice ring to it!!

  8. AssetsPepperdajagr on Dec 09, 2007 07:43 PM

The order on some of these is sort of specious. I'm still struggling with a few, including the card/ham one, the you're fired one, the bird, the high heel, and the scantily-clad gal. At least I got the theme!

[Edit: Aha! I got the fired one. That wasn't a gnu, as I originally suspected it was.]

  9. Avatar_profileBananaAossHat on Dec 09, 2007 07:37 PM

It's the Trevi Fountain if it helps anyone. Sorry if this is too salty, I haven't figured that one out yet, so I wouldn't know.

  10. AssetsTomatoMurdoctor on Dec 09, 2007 07:43 PM

[8] The card could have been clued with a person facing the other way.

It helps to identify the animal in the "you're fired" clue, and the type of bird in the bird clue.

Those drinks by the scantily-clad gal are non-alcoholic.

EDIT: And, on a sidenote, I just hit exactly 10000 points! Woohoo!

  11. Avatar_profileBananaSCTrueGent on Dec 09, 2007 07:43 PM

[8] dajagr, it's more than just the heel we are to look at

Anybody know what kind of bug that is?

  12. Avatar_profileBananaAossHat on Dec 09, 2007 07:43 PM

    Congrats Murdoctor!

  13. AssetsPepperdajagr on Dec 09, 2007 07:43 PM

[11] It's a dung beetle. Except that's such a dirty name to use.

  14. AssetsDuckiedavey3 on Dec 09, 2007 07:47 PM

[8] - I got the card/ham one because I found an answer that fits ... I still don't really get it. The scantily-clad gal is Cher if that helps. The you're fired one is clever, but that large hand kind of threw me off for a while. Good luck with the rest of them.

  15. AssetsRocketBerix on Dec 09, 2007 07:47 PM

wOOt Murdoctor, and many 10k more!

  16. AssetsGarlicmartinp13 on Dec 09, 2007 07:47 PM

Even knowing the theme doesn't help a lot... some are good and some are plain painful. :)

  17. AssetsAppleBeisaic on Dec 09, 2007 07:48 PM

    These are terrible clues.

  18. AssetsPepperdajagr on Dec 09, 2007 07:49 PM

[10] If I'm reading things right, did the scantily-glad gal often appear when it was sonny out?

  19. AssetsPumpkinprincessproton on Dec 09, 2007 07:50 PM

[8] Salt for the you're fired one pls?

  20. AssetsGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Dec 09, 2007 07:50 PM

at least a grain on the kind of animal...

  21. Avatar_profilePeachmklass on Dec 09, 2007 07:50 PM

    Fountain-mountain-hairy-guy on the drinks please

  22. AssetsPepperdajagr on Dec 09, 2007 07:53 PM

[20] It's an African animal, so it can't play on the range with the deer. (And it's a specific type, too.)

[21] Usually lemon drinks. Sometimes lime. Occasionally orange. Often kool.

  23. AssetsClockmust67 on Dec 09, 2007 07:59 PM

These are sure tough and some are a little too far out

  24. AssetsClockmust67 on Dec 09, 2007 07:59 PM

These are sure tough and some are a little too far out

  25. AssetsRocketBerix on Dec 09, 2007 07:59 PM

    [21] Doesn't have a 'board'

  26. AssetsAppleamaries80 on Dec 09, 2007 08:00 PM

wow...I'm lost on this one. I think I know 2 answers....but the rest!! UGH!!! tough puzzle!!

  27. AssetsRocketBerix on Dec 09, 2007 08:02 PM

    Any fountain-mountain-hairy-guy on the wing?

  28. AssetsRocketBerix on Dec 09, 2007 08:02 PM

    [Double Post]

  29. AssetsRocketSleepyBear on Dec 09, 2007 08:03 PM

Sorry this puzzle is so difficult! Once you know the theme, it might be easier to find the answers among a list of possibilities. None of them are obscure at all.

  30. Avatar_profileBananaSCTrueGent on Dec 09, 2007 08:04 PM

I think there were some better options out there for some of the clues, especially the dude covered in fur - some of these were more of a stretch than I've ever seen before

  31. AssetsPepperdajagr on Dec 09, 2007 08:04 PM

I'm still hung up on the bottom right two.

  32. AssetsGarlicHope2002 on Dec 09, 2007 08:07 PM

[27] Not just the wing. What is it a wing for? That made that one hard for me. Plus you have to change the order.

  33. AssetsTomatoDonimo on Dec 09, 2007 08:14 PM

[31] I wouldn't have gotten the last down so easily if I hadn't used the background picture in a puzzle of mine. It's not a marsh.

For the other one (with the leg if that's the one you mean) the background is general, the leg more specific. The background is not a musical.

  34. AssetsPepperdajagr on Dec 09, 2007 08:17 PM

[33] Thanks. I brute-forced them (sort of), but I see how yours work in retrospect. I always thought the background image in the last down was...vinier and muckier. Oh, well.

  35. AssetsRocketBerix on Dec 09, 2007 08:17 PM

[32] Thanks I got it, but still don't know why it works. Thanks for the F-M-HG

  36. AssetsGarlicHope2002 on Dec 09, 2007 08:17 PM

I really thought those were margaritas.

  37. AssetsRocketSleepyBear on Dec 09, 2007 08:18 PM

[30] I didn't want to head for the obvious imagery ... guess I might have gone too far in the other direction. At any rate, since each answer is constructed more or less phonetically, if you know the theme you should be able to figure out the answers with a partially decoded clue.

  38. AssetsSailboatkevinruns262 on Dec 09, 2007 08:18 PM

That was a lot of work for 20 Tanga points. Especially considering that the points are worthless other than for bragging rights.

  39. AssetsKiwikasreb on Dec 09, 2007 08:19 PM

finally got them all. awful clues or at least awful pictures for the clues.

  40. AssetsApplemichyrec on Dec 09, 2007 08:20 PM

    That was frustrating.

  41. AssetsSailboatkevinruns262 on Dec 09, 2007 08:20 PM

[36] Wasting away again in Margaritaville, searching for some Tanga salt. Some people say that it's a fountain-mountain-hairy-guy, but I know it's TangaMonkey's fault.

  42. AssetsApplebreity on Dec 09, 2007 08:21 PM

Does it matter who it is jumping rope? Coz I got nothin'. :-)

  43. AssetsStrawberryTheNomad on Dec 09, 2007 08:21 PM

any fountain-mountain-hairy guy (FMHG) on the guy coming out of the nose? Also I'm really hung up on the ham?

  44. AssetsGarlicHope2002 on Dec 09, 2007 08:22 PM

[41] you made my son and I laugh!

  45. AssetsSailboatkevinruns262 on Dec 09, 2007 08:22 PM

[42] You need the first name of the guy coming out of the nose.

[42] Yes. It's the first name of a character played by the guy, and he's not jumping rope, but....

  46. AssetsGarlicHope2002 on Dec 09, 2007 08:22 PM

[42] The character's name is important. Think bad TV, car, cops, moonshine.....

  47. AssetsSailboatkevinruns262 on Dec 09, 2007 08:24 PM

    [46] And don't forget very short shorts.....nice.

  48. AssetsSailboatkevinruns262 on Dec 09, 2007 08:25 PM

As cheesy as the show was, the movie remake with Johnny Knoxville was worse.

  49. AssetsGarlicHope2002 on Dec 09, 2007 08:25 PM

[47] Yes, they are named after her! I forgot about those. But she wasn't my focus.

  50. AssetsApplebreity on Dec 09, 2007 08:26 PM

Oh, no wonder. I was trying to use the *actor's* name and not the character's name (sorry if that was too salty). Thanks, folks!

Now to figure out the wing-cargo-train-o'-doom....

  51. AssetsRocketPhantaCComics on Dec 09, 2007 08:28 PM

All I can say is wow. Some of those are very large stretches, and all of them are major groaners.

  52. AssetsPepperdajagr on Dec 09, 2007 08:30 PM

    [51] I miss Milk Duds!

  53. AssetsStrawberryTheNomad on Dec 09, 2007 08:31 PM

Any FMHG on the name of the guy coming out of the nose. I have nothing.

  54. AssetsBananaPony on Dec 09, 2007 08:33 PM

[53] he was in Cannonball Run.

  55. AssetsGarlicHope2002 on Dec 09, 2007 08:33 PM

[53] He used to hang out with Burt Reynolds.

  56. AssetsPlumdougw on Dec 09, 2007 08:35 PM

[53] He was in Cannonball Run.

Edit: Wow; slow on the draw!

  57. AssetsApplebreity on Dec 09, 2007 08:35 PM

Okay, figured out wing-cargo-train-o'-doom, thus completing this puzzle. As for the now-completed puzzle... yeesh.

  58. AssetsSailboatkevinruns262 on Dec 09, 2007 08:36 PM

    [57] Yeah, pretty painful.

  59. AssetsStrawberryTheNomad on Dec 09, 2007 08:39 PM

    Thanks for the help

  60. AssetsStrawberryTheNomad on Dec 09, 2007 08:39 PM

    Thanks for the help

  61. AssetsPotatoeldurand on Dec 09, 2007 08:50 PM

Between reading about the FMHG and me telling my wife that I sat there saying "wench margaritas" to the computer for 10 minutes, my wife has been laughing hysterically! Horrible puzzle, but we have not laughed this hard in quite a while!

  62. AssetsStrawberryTheNomad on Dec 09, 2007 08:52 PM

Alright I'm going crazy. I needs some fountain-mountain-hairy guy on the fountain mountain hairy guy. I know the name of the fountain and the mountain but it's not coming together. I need help so I can go to bed.

  63. AssetsSailboatkevinruns262 on Dec 09, 2007 08:58 PM

[62] It's not the name of the mountain, but a mountain range, and think of the guy's covering as him wearing something made from an animal's hair. The answer isn't exactly how it sounds out, but it should help you to get it.

  64. AssetsSailboatkevinruns262 on Dec 09, 2007 08:57 PM

Excuse me, barkeep. Do you know how to make a Wench Margarita? SLAP!

    What did you call me?

  65. AssetsStrawberryTheNomad on Dec 09, 2007 09:02 PM

[63] Thanks that was my first thought but I spelled it wrong then got distracted by the Matterhorn.

  66. AssetsSailboatkevinruns262 on Dec 09, 2007 09:04 PM

[65] So you got it then?

  67. AssetsRocketSleepyBear on Dec 09, 2007 09:13 PM

Regarding the guy in the clue with the fountain and mountain, I was thinking of a word that describes his body that isn't the word "hairy." I was not thinking "hair suit," although amazingly that works too.

  68. AssetsStrawberryTheNomad on Dec 09, 2007 09:21 PM

[66] I got that one. the only one I have left is the bird over the pond. But I seem to be getting dumber as it gets later. I feel a real need to get this done tonight. it has to do with my OCD. So any FMHG on the bird. Please, I'm tired and pathetic.

Never mind.Got it.I hate right now.

  69. Avatar_profileApplevizzies_pup on Dec 09, 2007 09:49 PM

    Any help on the Seagull/marsh?

  70. AssetsStrawberrymasterminx on Dec 09, 2007 09:58 PM

Stuck on the last one down. Is the type of bird significant?

  71. AssetsPumpkinJohn on Dec 09, 2007 10:00 PM

    [69] It's not a marsh. Think cranberries.

  72. AssetsRocketSleepyBear on Dec 09, 2007 10:00 PM

OK. Refresh everybody. I updated some of the clues that were giving people trouble. (Remember the ones you solved before you hit the button!)

  73. AssetsStrawberrymasterminx on Dec 09, 2007 10:01 PM

    [69] It's not a marsh. Think cranberries.
    Thank you! Saved my bacon.

  74. Avatar_profileGrapesshrapnel on Dec 09, 2007 10:32 PM

The updated ship clue is much clearer. I'd never have gotten 'L' from the train, and I was stuck on "pterodactyl" for the wing. =)

  75. Avatar_profilePotatocanyc on Dec 09, 2007 10:32 PM

Is that Aunty Em in the 10th image? Need FMHG on that one and the bug-cow.

  76. AssetsRocketSleepyBear on Dec 09, 2007 10:36 PM

[75] Refresh. There's a much clearer clue now. But you were right!

  77. Avatar_profilePotatocanyc on Dec 09, 2007 10:45 PM

[76] Oh, finally got it. Was looking for something more classic to go with the rest.

  78. AssetsPlumMogri on Dec 09, 2007 10:50 PM

These were terrible clues. In particular, the bug/cow and the FMHG were real stretches.

  79. AssetsPumpkinJohn on Dec 09, 2007 10:52 PM

The mysterious african herd beast is called the Eland

  80. Avatar_profileGrapesshrapnel on Dec 09, 2007 11:17 PM

[79] Thanks for the salt! Now I just need the Indian woman...

  81. AssetsPepperTahnan on Dec 09, 2007 11:43 PM

Dear Lord, I got the easier version and it was still unpleasant. We'd had a run of fairly good puzzles recently; did TangaMonkey decide to back to undertested, slightly broken puzzles, for nostalgia's sake?

  82. Avatar_profilePeachmklass on Dec 09, 2007 11:49 PM

a term is coined tonight. FMHG. One day will rival lol or rotfl. Didn't get the puzzle, but got the term.

  83. AssetsBanananurdremes on Dec 10, 2007 01:07 AM

That was some hill! Some of these were tough but I got a good laugh.

  84. AssetsTomatoMurdoctor on Dec 10, 2007 05:36 AM

[52] LOL! Glad you liked that one. I try to include at least one "forehead-slapper" in my hypercrosses.

I see several of the clue pictures here have been changed since last night... some distinct improvements.

  85. AssetsGarlicspamwise on Dec 10, 2007 06:57 AM

Still lost on the leg. :(
Is it "background" + "leg" or "leg" + "background"?

  86. AssetsPumpkinimapuzzl on Dec 10, 2007 07:00 AM

I thought it was fun. Fair? Pretty close. Some great groaners, though. And the coinage of the FMHG term is Brilliant! Brilliant!

  87. AssetsPumpkinimapuzzl on Dec 10, 2007 07:01 AM

    [85] background + leg

  88. AssetsGarlicspamwise on Dec 10, 2007 07:20 AM

    [87] Thanks.

  89. AssetsGarlicHope2002 on Dec 10, 2007 07:20 AM

[85] go really general with the background. The clues this morning are much clearer.

  90. AssetsPumpkinimapuzzl on Dec 10, 2007 07:24 AM

[85] the background would be clearer if there were a fat lady singing....

  91. Avatar_profilePeachmklass on Dec 10, 2007 07:36 AM

[33] Edit yourself, way to salty for you to post on this.

  92. AssetsPlumSaltone on Dec 10, 2007 08:12 AM

any help on the woman teh bug/cow, and the fountain mountain harry guy? those are all I have left.

  93. Avatar_profileAceGertSoB on Dec 10, 2007 08:32 AM

One problem is that several of these depend on pronouncing things with a particular accent. Words that sound nothing alike in other accents. Like the Indian lady, and the one with the lamb.

  94. Avatar_profilePeachmklass on Dec 10, 2007 09:06 AM

    [92] you're chasing meaningless things

  95. AssetsCheeseburgerQurqirishDragon on Dec 10, 2007 09:18 AM

I finally got 'you're fired,' but I still don't quite get it. I did a search for other animals in the same family as what I thought it was (and other clues posted here confirmed I had the right animal family), but I don't see what works.

  96. AssetsBananaBalzac on Dec 10, 2007 09:20 AM

This is a great puzzle with some very interesting clues. They can't all be easy. [92] this is the best clue in the puzzle. find the name of the fountain and the name of the mountain and that should be enough.

  97. AssetsCheeseburgerQurqirishDragon on Dec 10, 2007 09:33 AM

Never mind. I suddenly had an "aha" moment. I wasn't getting the animal wrong, I was getting the hand wrong!

  98. AssetsCheeseburgerQurqirishDragon on Dec 10, 2007 09:34 AM

Sorry for the double post. This can be removed.

  99. AssetsPepperChupper on Dec 10, 2007 09:54 AM

I think I've got them all except for the bug/cow. I really need a salty fountain mountain hairy guy to finish this up!

Nevermind, got it after I posted. It's not a steer, that's BS.

  100. AssetsPlumSaltone on Dec 10, 2007 09:55 AM

I got teh FMHG, but I still need some help on the other two.

    [94] huh?
