[1] Yep...that's what caused me to stumble - especially as the variable letters are the uncrossed/unchecked ones.

[5] That's an oopsie. The mods are supposed to check for that prior to any publication (featured or unfeatured). All Hypercross clues to be JPG format.
But in fairness - it has been some time since a PNG slipped through to a published puzzle.
What is the issue with png files? Is it a browser problem? An OS problem? They've always been ok for me.
I had thought it was a browser problem...specifically that IE has troubles w/ PNG files at times.
#3 looks like a caramel with someones teeth stuck in it.

The spelling variant referenced in [1] is now in clue #2 after the puzzle was fixed.
variants or no, still a nice puzzle, well done!
[14] And now Tanga reordered the "variant spelling" clue again...it is #3 now.
Onelook.com has 4 spelling versions of this word....
the uncrossed letters are A and O (in that order.)
And I always thought you couldn't go wrong with meat on a stick.
