The boxcar seems to be hanging me up. Other than that, I'm glad I watched PBS all those weekend evenings!

  2. FilePepperChupper on Jan 03, 2008 07:15 PM

sweet, two top 10s and a 14th for me tonight... my best ever!

  3. FileEggRPardoe on Jan 03, 2008 07:21 PM

    [1]same here....
Actually had the boxcar - typo in another word...and 21st as a result.

  4. FileSailboatESQuire on Jan 03, 2008 07:18 PM

    Salt on the boxcar?

  5. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Jan 03, 2008 07:19 PM

Ok. The fourth clue and the eighth clue seem to be showing the same thing. What is the difference?

  6. FilePotatocoolwip on Jan 03, 2008 07:32 PM

These are tough to search for...

  7. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Jan 03, 2008 07:20 PM

[1],[3],[4]: imagine it to be little and red

  8. FileBananaahecht on Jan 03, 2008 07:24 PM

There is a mistake on the boxcar: the American spelling of the British term is five letters, but the British spelling repeats the middle letter, giving it six letters.

  9. FileDuckienrkii on Jan 03, 2008 07:21 PM

boxcar = google railway and see if you can find old words for that

  10. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Jan 03, 2008 07:22 PM

[6] Sorry. I meant the red can and the gas pumps. I have the food answers.

  11. FileBananaahecht on Jan 03, 2008 07:23 PM

[10]: The red can is what's in the can. The gas pumps refer to the building.

  12. FileRadishThosw on Jan 03, 2008 07:27 PM

Actually had the boxcar right. I think it's the gas station that's hanging me up.

Edit: Finally got the gas station. Don't hear that word that way often unless I'm listening to Levi from Elton John.

And the shoes have two spellings.

  13. FileClockmust67 on Jan 03, 2008 07:26 PM

I'm hung up on the gas station. Salt?

  14. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Jan 03, 2008 07:26 PM

    Stuck on the dress :(

  15. FileBananaahecht on Jan 03, 2008 07:28 PM

[13]: Read comment [10]. It's the building, not the pumps.

  16. Avatar_profileGrapesjulzlady on Jan 03, 2008 07:28 PM

I have all of them except the train car. That one, I have *no clue* about. I hate when this happens.

  17. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Jan 03, 2008 07:28 PM

    Got it, I'm an idiot.

  18. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Jan 03, 2008 07:29 PM

    [16] Great salt in [7]

  19. FileOnionmetafor on Jan 03, 2008 07:29 PM

Thought I had them all...agree that the railway car is spelt wrong...but maybe it's something else...I'm stuck on that one

  20. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Jan 03, 2008 07:30 PM

    Thanks for the salt, ahecht!

    38th! I'm on FIRE tonight!

  21. Avatar_profileGrapesjulzlady on Jan 03, 2008 07:38 PM

    18 - Not helping, alas.

Edit - Really? I've never heard that usage.

Also, HOW do you make the links to previous posts work? I used to click and drag the number into the comment box, but now that doesn't work.

  22. FileRocketokmaybenot on Jan 03, 2008 07:33 PM

It's puzzles like this that make me happy I'm an American living in Britain, even though a few of these I've not heard used in common practice.

    That was brill!

  24. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Jan 03, 2008 07:39 PM

    Finally!!

  25. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Jan 03, 2008 07:39 PM

    [23] Friggin' brill!

  26. FileSailboatESQuire on Jan 03, 2008 07:39 PM

    Pukka puzzle, Geeza!

  27. FileCheeseburgerQurqirishDragon on Jan 03, 2008 07:42 PM

[11] Thanks! I couldn't figure out what that was indicating. I thought it referred to a gas station, but I couldn't find a term for that which fit.

I'm just happy I got all but 4 of them without help.

    Edit:
[21] simply type the post number in square brackets. The system automatically makes the link for you.

  28. Avatar_profileRadishrmcelroy on Jan 03, 2008 07:40 PM

    Just my cuppa tea!

  29. FileCarrotpitamuffin on Jan 03, 2008 07:41 PM

Any salt for the dress? I'm just not getting it.

  30. FileGrapesMadHatir on Jan 03, 2008 07:42 PM

I'm stuck on the dress and the shoes.

  31. FileCheeseburgerQurqirishDragon on Jan 03, 2008 07:45 PM

[29],[30] For the dress, think of a monk's robe.

Sorry, I can't think of help for the shoes. I found an answer after searching for British English translations. That's the best I can offer.

  32. FileClockJewelia on Jan 03, 2008 07:47 PM

[29] and [30] Check your tangagrams.

  33. FileGrapesMadHatir on Jan 03, 2008 07:48 PM

    now just the dress

  34. FileCarrotpitamuffin on Jan 03, 2008 07:51 PM

[32] Thank you! Now I'm getting it.

  35. FileApplefullhouse on Jan 03, 2008 07:51 PM

think of a little kids dress

  36. Avatar_12-08Pancakesthreehojos on Jan 03, 2008 07:54 PM

Nice puzzle! Challenging but not too tough.

  37. FilePlumhistorysteph on Jan 03, 2008 08:02 PM

Fun puzzle! I knew all but three off the top of my head.

  38. FileAppleFez on Jan 03, 2008 08:21 PM

    effingpot = internet salt

  39. FileAppleFez on Jan 03, 2008 08:26 PM

[30} salt for the shoes is also the name of an obscure 80s new wave band. Though the band spelled the name differently than the direct British term for the shoe pictured. They had only one minor hit on the soundtrack of an 80s teen movie (not "Fast Times at Ridgemont High")

  40. Current.deal.avOnionmonocle on Jan 03, 2008 08:36 PM

    nice.

  41. AvatarDuckiesteph_frolin on Jan 03, 2008 09:37 PM

Still not getting the shoes or dress...other salt helped on the gas station, but the boxcar is throwing me. A slang term I found on 3 different sites doesn't fit. Van car. Any sympathy?

  42. FileGarlicmartinp13 on Jan 03, 2008 10:39 PM

Sigh.... I have all the answers but something's misspeeeeled. :(

NEVERMIND... vertical shoes used the unusual speeling. :)

  43. FileBananaBobcat on Jan 04, 2008 01:18 AM

Ok, the dress I *should* have got.. the boxcar took some work, but the flippin' shoes? Never heard of that word in my bloody life..

  44. FileOnionmetafor on Jan 04, 2008 05:48 AM

Okay...woke up this morning and retried all my answers...can't figure out what I spelled wrong. Anyone willing to check my answer list and steer me right?

  45. FileSailboatIlta on Jan 04, 2008 06:10 AM

[45] the spelling on the shoes is a bit wonky; make sure you're not all by yourself.

  46. Avatar_profileBananawhitastic on Jan 04, 2008 06:11 AM

Great Puzzle!! The only one that tripped me up for a few minutes was number 4.

  47. FilePancakesCWarrior on Jan 04, 2008 06:14 AM

I think its stupid that it gives you an all or nothing on "check your answers" ... at least an "x of y" would be nice.

  48. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Jan 04, 2008 07:04 AM

    [45] Tangagram sent.

  49. FileAppleRicochet on Jan 04, 2008 07:40 AM
  50. FileOnionmetafor on Jan 04, 2008 08:54 AM

Thanks Scoutmom...weird shoe spellings get me every time.

  51. FileStrawberrycurlykitty on Jan 04, 2008 09:00 AM

Got all the answers but something has got to be spelled wrong. I have checked them all and for the life of me can't find it. Aargh! I hate to be a pest but would someone mind checking me?

  52. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Jan 04, 2008 09:06 AM

curlykitty - sent you some help!

  53. FileStrawberrycurlykitty on Jan 04, 2008 09:14 AM

Thank you scoutmom! I did have one of the easiest ones misspelled and couldn't see the error. Thanks again!

  54. FileOnionzyrilia on Jan 04, 2008 01:31 PM

I agree - a little "x of y correct" would be grand! I have them all filled in, and it's still not right...

Edit: Nevermind - I got it. Those darn shoes!

  55. OctopusPeppercomishcraig on Jan 04, 2008 03:54 PM

I've checked and double checked, and I can't find what I've got mis-spelled. ***edit*** got it. It was the stupid shoes.

  56. FilePotatorevchewie on Jan 04, 2008 04:22 PM

    [12] Thank you!!!

That was the last one hanging me up. Sat here going through the song in my head trying to find a word that fit the cross letter I had already. Good thing I love that song! (Picking at nits - it's Levon...)

  57. Avatar_profileOrangejredd on Jan 04, 2008 04:36 PM

I'm totally stuck on the not a gas station one. Much of my problem is that I can't come up with the American name for the structure. Argh.

  58. Avatar_profileKiwitaznjazz on Jan 04, 2008 06:50 PM

If only Babelfish had an American to British dictionary. Good thing Google has several editions...

[58] Depending where in America you live, it's the same word, just pronounced a little different...and you might have one at home...

  59. Avatar_profileKiwitaznjazz on Jan 04, 2008 06:52 PM

The one I hated was the eggs or whatever under the snausages...had me mashing my brains out!

  60. Joerg_vegas_april_2006__21_AppleMrsBonsai on Apr 12, 2008 05:29 PM

[41] THANK YOU! There's apparently 3 different ways to spell 11! (And I had the wrong one!)

  61. 1981709Sailboatjgf on Aug 12, 2008 07:07 PM

Too me too long; need to watch more British comedies. :)

Since people have trouble spelling #11, you'll need 3 of the same letter.
