    Hmm, catchy category.

  2. FileRocketPhantaCComics on Jun 05, 2007 07:08 PM

Though I'm stuck on the bone/skull pic, the bird and the bust. . .

  3. ApparatusGrapesApparatus on Jun 05, 2007 07:12 PM

The boat was the only one I had to research. Sticking with the theme it was easy to guess at any I was missing out of the rest.

  4. Tog6Pumpkinprincessproton on Jun 05, 2007 07:13 PM

[2] For the skull, think a place where you might find bones (underground).

Any salt on the bird or the boat? The bird particularly is difficult to look up knowing only the first 3 letters.

Edit: Got the boat, need the bird.
Edit 2: Got the bird, thanks. I thought it would be more complicated than that.

  5. FileGrapesxpsdude on Jun 05, 2007 07:15 PM

    Less salty comment.

For the bird, use the theme and a crossword solver to get the answer, I used

    www.unscramble.net

  6. FileRocketPhantaCComics on Jun 05, 2007 07:15 PM

I looked up on wiki for the bird but didn't see anything that seemed to fit. . .

The boat. . . I'm not certain how to give salt on that without just saying it.

  7. FileRadishThosw on Jun 05, 2007 07:15 PM

[4] The answer is obvious. Somebody is in its seat.

  8. FileRocketPhantaCComics on Jun 05, 2007 07:18 PM

[7] Thanks, I've never heard of that bird before. Gotta go look it up.

  9. FilePotatoDrParty06 on Jun 05, 2007 07:20 PM

hrmm i have what appear to be all the right answers but it says i am wrong.

  10. FileAppleTangaJoe (Tanga Admin) on Jun 05, 2007 07:22 PM

So you guys like this game? We've got a couple of interface improvements coming soon.

  11. FileRocketPhantaCComics on Jun 05, 2007 07:23 PM

    [9]
Check your spelling then, that's likely the issue. I had a problem on one myself that slowed me down.

  12. FileRocketPhantaCComics on Jun 05, 2007 07:25 PM

    [10]
I do like them, they are quick and simple, pretty clever too. On days which the easy and/or the hard puzzle turn out to be real stumpers it is nice to have this one to sort of rest my brain for a bit.

  13. FileGrapesxpsdude on Jun 05, 2007 07:25 PM

    Yes, TangaJoe

    I like the new puzzles.

  14. FilePotatoDrParty06 on Jun 05, 2007 07:27 PM

[11] yep that was the problem, was trying to fix the wrong one initially.

  15. SouthparkPepperTahnan on Jun 05, 2007 07:32 PM

Including both the second across word and the third across word was a little lazy.

  16. FileApplegilby123 on Jun 05, 2007 07:36 PM

    Love em, TangaJoe!

Stuck on the bird and bust ones... :(

  17. Avatar_profilePearbver100 on Jun 05, 2007 07:37 PM

Stuck on the music clip...any salt?

  18. FileApplegilby123 on Jun 05, 2007 07:40 PM

[17] 70's musician, has a new name now.

Anyone able to help on the bird or bust?

I have a feeling both are things I've never heard of.

  19. Avatar_profilePearbigbam76 on Jun 05, 2007 07:40 PM

[17] Did a band name search on google and got it right away

  20. FileAceMzblubrd on Jun 05, 2007 07:41 PM

I cant find a bird that starts with those letters either
in the dictionary or by pictures. Okay got it, not sure its real though -- found it, its real -- my solution was just a plain guess though.

  21. FileApplegilby123 on Jun 05, 2007 07:42 PM

Yeah, I used oneacross.com with and without "bird" as a clue and got zip. Same with the bust.

    :(

  22. FileRocketPhantaCComics on Jun 05, 2007 07:51 PM

For the bust. . . I sort of guessed and then looked it up to determine it was a real person. . . I took the concept or format I suppose you could say of the name Plato only putting in the 'theme'. Not sure if that helps at all.

The bird, well, ummm, apply the theme then don't overthink it. What do you see?

  23. FileTomatobcgrote on Jun 05, 2007 07:54 PM

[7] I LOVED that Thurber story!

    Great theme, nice fun puzzle....

  24. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jun 05, 2007 07:56 PM

I'm doing these first to take the heat off myself to be in the top ten...

Finding the Tanga experience much more enjoyable with the pressure off!

and yes [10] TangaJoe I am really enjoying these puzzles, even the ones I had to go looking for...
    ------------------------------------------------------
I agree with [26] princessproton that it would be nice if the hypercross blogs showed up on the news page also :-)

  25. FileApplegilby123 on Jun 05, 2007 07:59 PM

[22] Thanks. Yup, never heard of him and I just dislike the bird one...made me groan certainly.

  26. Tog6Pumpkinprincessproton on Jun 05, 2007 08:12 PM

[10] These new hypercrosses are a lot of fun, and I like the consistent themes - it makes it way less frustrating to have something to work with when you have no idea about a particular clue.

It would be great if these were also added to the newspage as well.

My only real gripe is that if you edit a comment, it clears all your answers and you have to fill them all in again, but I don't know if there is a way around that besides not editing or using another window.

  27. FileRaspberryMarkel on Jun 05, 2007 10:16 PM

For the bird, I used the list at http://birding.about.com/library/blalphatypeofbird.htm

No need to solve for the bust - you can easily guess the first 3 letters, and the last letter is solved by other word.

  28. Avatar_profileGrapesJasonLP on Jun 05, 2007 10:45 PM

Got the bird--It was the plants that I had a hard time with. Finally got it though.

  29. FileBananarenfurdson (Tanga Admin) on Jun 05, 2007 11:11 PM

That was the idea on the bust. You weren't supposed to know it but you got it automatically.

He was a Roman poet I think? A Roman something.

  30. FileAppleTWhitsett on Jun 06, 2007 03:54 AM

    [29] Roman hand, wasn't he?

  31. FileAppleRSeery on Jun 06, 2007 04:00 AM

[10] LOVE this new puzzle format. Very fun!

  32. AvatarBananaVotey on Jun 06, 2007 06:08 AM

For the bird, I entered "catfood". It's not right. lol.

  33. FilePepperChupper on Jun 06, 2007 06:30 AM

SALTS for the clues folks are struggling with:
The bust used to hang out with Green Hornet and OJ Simpson.
The song wasn't sung by Harold and Maude.
The bones could be used to groom a cat's fur (and may be beneath the answer that fits in the down box connected to this one).
The bird is two animals in one.

(ps. if you haven't seen Harold and Maude, it's a great crazy flick)

  34. FilePotatoDandelion_Wine on Jun 06, 2007 07:18 AM

The only one I had to research was the bird. I got the bust only because I had already did the across below it and just needed to fill in the theme. I got curious and did a google search accidentally on the same browser page so I had to start all over! LOL

The first crossword solver I used didn't come up w/ the answer but the second one did.

    [32] Now THAT'S funny

  35. FilePlumsjlee on Jun 06, 2007 07:37 AM

Once you come up with the "theme" of all the answers, you should be able to get all the answers... or at least the beginning part of each one.

For the bird... it's easier than you think. In fact, you probably don't even need to look up the answer... just type what you see (along with the common theme).

[25] No reason not to like the bird one... it's not like the answer was made up... it's real.

For the boat... just use Wikipedia.

For the audio clip... the answer is the singer's name (first and last). Younger people might have a tough time with this one.

For the bust, once you get the other answers, this one is easy.

For the skulls, people who play D&D will know. Otherwise, I think it's a-maze-ing.

  36. Ace_20ace_20copy_1_AppleAce76 on Jun 06, 2007 08:03 AM

    Very fun puzzle.

  37. FileAceMzblubrd on Jun 06, 2007 11:35 AM

I tried Catcall for the bird, it didnt work either

  38. FileBananaTangaMonkey (Tanga Admin) on Jun 06, 2007 11:54 AM

    Glad you like the puzzles!

  39. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jun 06, 2007 06:08 PM

Thanks for adding the hypercross blog to the News page!

  40. FileAceToxidyne on Jun 06, 2007 06:40 PM

    Very enjoyable.

  41. FileRocketArchangel on Oct 22, 2007 12:12 PM

Lovely. Another one with a broken clue. I really need to start checking that they're all their before i go ahead and solve the rest.

  42. FileRocketArchangel on Oct 25, 2007 04:31 PM

The broken clue was denied entry into the US. (I can't believe i didn't get this the other day.)

  43. FfpicBananadkburnsjr on Aug 12, 2010 09:54 AM

I was stuck on #6. That was almost a catastrophe.

  44. Julia20Sailboatjila58 on Feb 11, 2011 09:49 AM

    ? Clue number 1 is a "bad image", I can't even start

  45. BjDuckiedrlaura92 on Apr 02, 2011 04:36 PM

For those finding this puzzle recently, for the missing picture on clue #1, look up Yusuf Islam.
Figured it out given salt about about a musician with a new name.

  46. FileKiwiKharing68 on May 30, 2011 10:55 PM

WAY too much time on #10!!

    A) What is the theme? + B) what is the general term for what is in the photo?

  47. FileKiwiKharing68 on May 30, 2011 10:58 PM

    #1: "Peace Train"
