Hey Gang.
If you did yesterday's puzzle, then there's no major "aha" moment for you tonight. When I was writing that puzzle, I had come up with a bunch of possible answers, many of which I worked up, and ran by some people, but chose not to use.
When renfurdson saw my final draft, he contacted me: Hey, where was that one I liked? And that other one? Some of those were good. You really should do another one of these.
I told him, if he was serious, that I'd put together a second one, but only if it could appear the next day. Because the puzzle part of "how do I solve this" is essentially gone, right? There's still "stuff" to solve, but a puzzle sequel is more like an activity than an exploration.
He agreed, and so... here they are. The sloppy seconds clues :)
Some I didn't use because I was worried they weren't broad enough for people to know (and I didn't want a LOT of Googling to be necessary). Some were perfectly fine, but just didn't fit into my grid (constructing that grid took waaaaay longer than it should have to figure out). Some were maybe too tricky. And some just didn't float my boat. But they clearly floated renfurdson's :)
Oh, and if you weren't here yesterday:
http://www.tanga.com/crossword_puzzles/636-1-28-2008
Enjoy.
Full disclosure:
Since I'm laying it all out there, here are the ones that didn't make my initial cut, that I didn't even try to work up:
Marvin the martian
Buffy the vampire slayer
Casper the friendly ghost
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer
Bob the builder
Can't get the nerd
Salt on the computer guy?
[4] If I'm correct, he works for your company.
Can't get the second identical funny man. Was he in a movie?
EDIT: Ignore my attempt to salt the nerd here.
Salt on the fat lady singing?
[3].[4] What is he doing?
[5] She is singing solo
Arnott the Fantastic. Seriously, this was so much fun; I like Hypercrosses that require a little associative thought, rather than just typing what you see. And even if it weren't good in general, that bottom across clue justifies the whole thing.
Can someone salt the first clown for me?
Edit; never mind, just didn't go far enough in the alphabet.
Got all the answers, but it won't accept them. Anyone online that can confirm my answers (via tangagram)?
Edit: Nevermind. Got it.
Very salty Arnott...
[5] second clown is from an animated tv show.
[9] Does a sequence of buckets from 1 to 6 help?
[8] Thanks, Tahnan. Yeah, I wert real fond of that rebus, too :)
clowns, two clowns, not just one, TWO!!!
all but the pool - any salt?
Nevermind - I didn't see the -L attached to it:)
Still could use some help on the nerd ...
Another great one Arnott!
You solved this puzzle in 0 seconds and were the 53rd Tanga member to solve it.
Salt for the fat lady? I'm just not seeing it...
[19] Same here, the dog and the bull too.
[17] Ditto. Not seeing it.
[20] That's not just any old dog.
[19] It's not what she is, but what she's singing.
[5] MY company? I don't really have a company....
[20] The bull is an awful cartoon character.
[3], [4] That's one of the few I did get. What do you call the conversion of CDs tunes to MP3 format?
Any help on the fat lady?
Edit: got it. How 'bout the pool or second clown?
Ack, I suck
[23] Thanks...that one was a huge stretch IMHO, but nice puzzle anyway.
Hmmm. . . the computer guy.
Nevermind the previous second half of these. . . I got that one.
[26] bless you. As for the fat lady, it's not her, it's what she's singing.
[24] I think it might be from an SNL sketch, where he works for "your company" (where "your" is not picking out anyone in particular, but is part of the title of the sketch). If not, then that answer fits there too.
EDIT: Ignore my attempt to salt the nerd here.
[3],[17],[19],[20],[21] The character name has very little to do with the character of the nerd. Think dark, gloomy, evil person who is using media to convert from one music format to another....
[26] [19] [20] If you have the map country ID'd, then the fat lady should be no problem.
[31] Ok. Thanks.
Am I the only one not seeing the bear?
EDIT: Got it. I dressed up as him one year for a parade.
[33] It was if you thought her name was Olga for some reason! Yeah, it didn't quite work, but I found 3 of those letters in the country name and one that was close enough, so I removed the wrong ones! Got it now.
[35] Only you...
Loads of fun, arnott! BTW, I've been doing some of your older puzzles lately. Good job!
I'm a little stuck in the mud on the one with the eye so far.
Loved this last night, enjoying this one, too, Arnott. You shoulda kept Marvin et al for a later date. ^_^
I liked this. Got stuck on the geek, but just kept churning thorugh possible names.
Had to go see what yesterday's puzzle was about, though, as I'm not on everyday. Once you get rolling, some are obvious.
The one with the bull was clever.
Hmmm. . . new problem. My answers all fit and make sense but it won't take it.
These Hypercrosses have been so much fun! I love them!
[39] If you don't know the country, Google the city...
man...any salt on the bear?
[36] LOL! Slick... I love that you would assume I could even *find* a picture to represent the word "Olga" :)
[41] Help is available from the usual suspects...in the regular place...
[38] Thanks, scoutmom. Three cheers for the Tanga archive :)
Okay, I think I've got the nerd wrong. So, it's probably a good idea to disregard my "help" for that one.
Just to be pedantic, "__ the Bear" is really just "__ Bear," no?
Regardless, the fun continues. Thanks!
[49] You are correct except in song!
Check out the third paragraph in the Wikipedia entry for this.
grah, I got it. That was maybe a stretch.
[49] Correct... AS IT SAYS in the clue :)
-Fellow Pedant
Got the nerd. I'd bet he's decent at other vocations too, but not the best of any of them.
It is not Nick Burns, your company's computer guy, I was led astray
[2] Arnott, you missed some: Gonewith the Wind :)
[31] Okay, the "your company" clue put me down the wrong road. It has nothing to do with that SNL skit from what I can tell. However, I have no clue what does go there. I basically ended up just trying to think of names that would fit and quickly landed on the answer.
Arnott - you should have gone with the "other picture" instead of the pool! That would have been great! I'm thinkin' Mr. Hanky with his Christmas hat wouldn't be too bad. I even have a pic of him around here somewhere for a Tanga Times rebus for the exact same character.
[52] Wellll, that's what I get for not letting the entire image load before answering the clue and deciding I know everything. Sorry!
The other option for the pool is to get that guy from Dirty Jobs! He has a term that he repeats a lot that would have worked here.
[57] Lemme tell you... whatever you do, do NOT try that search in Google images. There are WAY TOO MANY people on the internet who have taken pictures of their... well... just trust me on this one.
<<shudder>>
Hundreds of pictures.
Nice. Both puzzles very fun.
[60] Eeeeeew!
[26] - thanks for explaining that one. I guessed an answer that fit in the space, but couldn't figure out why.
ok im lost on the dog... any help?
(edit)
GROAN!!! Just had to describe it to myself.......
[64] If you put what type of "dog" it is into Google, it's the very first hit. You don't even both adjectives :)
thanks Arnott. Nice job, by the way!
[33] I have the country but still cannot place the lady or what she is doing. Can I get a little more?
EDIT: Is it some technical opera terminology or should it be more plain?
It's the common opera term for a solo. You should see it quite clearly in the country name... but, of course, if you don't know the word then you won't see it :)
EDIT: wow, it's an actual WIKI question http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_term_for_an_Opera_solo
[68] OK. I tried that but couldn't make sense of the clue. Let me work on it a bit more.
EDIT: AHA!! I just needed a few more runs at it.
Arnott - As last night, thanks! Much fun.
My pleasure.
Okay, All... off to dinner now. Play nice.
Am I the only person who can't get the very first one? I've gotten all of the others.
Never mind, just had to check with the child in me.
ok... got em. I love leftovers.
Again, brilliant! I really like the twist in the clue-answer combos on this pair of puzzles.
And I appreciate and applaud your taste and restraint with using the pool clue. Or pool cue. Whatever.
I agree. This and yesterday puzzlue were a lot of fun! Great work.
meh...didn't get it yesterday, not getting it tonight. two days worth of hypercross puzzles i can't get :(
Attila! where are you?
p.s. Nice pair of puzzles Arnott - thanks!
At this point it's just piling on, but... fun pair of puzzles.
anyone interested in checking mine? it says no again.
[77] Oh my! Never even occurred to me! There are a LOT of these, way more than I initally thought there'd be when I started this puzzle.
I love the dog one, I got it right away
Liked the puzzle as always arnott but I must say I wasn't a fan of the opera one.
[68] I had that one right away, but it still doesn't result in a word that makes any sense.
"K" + (the rest of what you get from that pic) + "eye" isn't a word at all.
Edit: Never mind, I got it ;)
and "eric the unready" (harder to clue though)
What? No "X the Eliminator"!?!?!
Loved this one.
Is the bug "that bug" ______? Or am I way off? I am thinking old school sunday comics?
Edit: Here's my sign.... Sorry
Okay..salt pretty please...got em all except the opera one and yes I know the country and the opera term...I'm obviously missing something super obvious with "k" or eyeballs! aaarrrggghhh help!!!!!
Okay..salt pretty please...got em all except the opera one and yes I know the country and the opera term...I'm obviously missing something super obvious with "k" or eyeballs! aaarrrggghhh help!!!!!
your AAArrrggghhhh is pretty close
Loved the dog and the pool, they trough me for a while today but this puzzle is great!! Way to go
still working on the top one with the computer guy, Rip Torn would have went nice there
[87] The K is in quotes so you will pronounce it KAY (as opposed to adding the letter K up front), and the EYE is an eye. When you sound out the whole thing, it will rebus to two words.
[90] Rip Torn is closer than you think :) If the guy is *doing* something, what could you refer to him as?
I went back to solve yesterdays hypercross since it is needed to find the theme for todays. I noticed that you only get 1 point for solving old hypercrosses, yet when you solve the others you get 3 points. Since hypercross puzzles are normally worth more maybe the old puzzles should be worth more points too?
I don't know who these kind of suggestions should be made to, but I figured this is as good a place as any to put it :)
BTW, I like the puzzle theme for yesterday and todays. Fun to solve.
I know it is pretty close, I got it and it was the 3rd time I had to slap my forehead (and grin) during this puzzle.
Again great puzzle, thanks.
[57] That's what I thought the ANSWER was!! I couldn't figure out how to get a viable answer out of it. I was about to resort to Google when I added "the" to it and it clicked!
oh duh....thanks Arnott...off to sit in the corner with the D cap on...
Man! I wish I hadn't missed yesterday's puzzle! This one had just the right amount of difficulty and ponderings that a good puzzle should. I went back and did yesterday's just now. GREAT puzzles!! Rebus FTW!
Nice puzzles! I enjoyed (and groaned at K-country ;) )
But I have all my answers, all spelled right as far as I can see, but it still says I am wrong! :(
I am guessing I have a wrong one that fits somehow, but of course I have no way of knowing which one. Anyone I can TG to confirm my fears?
[53] You saved me from an afternoon of tearing my hair out over the nerd. Thanks!!
Sure, but I'm betting it's the clown :)
