    HUH?!

  2. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Jan 28, 2008 07:04 PM

Okay, what the picture is...doesn't fit????

  3. FileAcescarver on Jan 28, 2008 07:05 PM

I think they're doing what I would like to do if I created a totally evil puzzle...give obvious clues that don't fit and have no common theme!

  4. BearSailboatkarp on Jan 28, 2008 07:29 PM

Nice puzzle...for some reason I made this way harder than it needed to be.

  5. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Jan 28, 2008 07:06 PM

I get the theme, there's some I can't put together...

  6. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Jan 28, 2008 07:06 PM

    SHENANIGANS!

  7. FileGarlicHope2002 on Jan 28, 2008 07:06 PM

I'm missing the blimp one and the prisoner one. Help?

  8. FilePotatoDoomDahDoomDoom on Jan 29, 2008 06:15 AM

I'm confused too... From the title I have a feeling this might be all about the creator of the puzzle??

edit: ok that took awhile, but once I finally figured out the theme it was a fun one.

  9. FileGarlicHope2002 on Jan 28, 2008 07:07 PM

    Nevermind

  10. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:08 PM

[7] You can Google them both, if you have the words.

  11. FileGarlick1w1 on Jan 28, 2008 07:09 PM

    I'm stuck on prisoner.

  12. FileSailboatIlta on Jan 28, 2008 07:09 PM

    Help with the prisoner one?

  13. FileGarlicHope2002 on Jan 28, 2008 07:09 PM

3rd! That was fun. The picture with the strawberry gave me the theme.

  14. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:10 PM

    [2] Correct.
    [3] Incorrect, in re: theme.
[8] Nope. Was just the title I thought helped the most.

  15. FileAcescarver on Jan 28, 2008 07:10 PM

I get the theme now. Prisoner salt please?

  16. FileDuckienrkii on Jan 28, 2008 07:11 PM

The prisoner one is the last one for me too

  17. FileSailboatIlta on Jan 28, 2008 07:11 PM

Nevermind. I was a bit too Hastings.

  18. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Jan 28, 2008 07:11 PM

OOOH! I get it now! Any salt on the prisoner one?

  19. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:11 PM

[11], [12] Stuck on the answer... or can't get the clue word?

  20. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:11 PM

    [17] LOL.

  21. FileDuckienrkii on Jan 28, 2008 07:11 PM

Arnott, I can't figure out the clue word... I tried a few

  22. FileGarlick1w1 on Jan 28, 2008 07:12 PM

[19] can't get the clue word.

  23. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Jan 28, 2008 07:12 PM

    Whoooo, that was fun!

  24. FileDuckienrkii on Jan 28, 2008 07:15 PM

okay, I got the answer by guessing what name fit those letters I had, but I still don't know what the clue word was for the prisoner

  25. FilePepperdajagr on Jan 28, 2008 07:15 PM

It took me until the sack before I got it. Great theme for an eponymous puzzle! :)

  26. FilePepperdajagr on Jan 28, 2008 07:16 PM

It turns out that the prisoner isn't a pro.

  27. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Jan 28, 2008 07:17 PM

gah, still stuck on the prisoner and the blimp!

  28. FileGrapesMutombo on Jan 28, 2008 07:18 PM

    loved the puzzle. very cool.

  29. Ronald-mcd-3EggKilgore on Jan 28, 2008 07:20 PM

I get the first part of the prisoner, just not the rest of it.....help!
For the blimp one- think more general for the 2nd part.

  30. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Jan 28, 2008 07:20 PM

Awesome puzzle, Arnott! Still no idea about the sack, but I loved the rest of it.

  31. FileRocketBearcat89 on Jan 28, 2008 07:20 PM

Working on computers for over 20 years and with a GUI for almost as long and I still was stuck on that stupid prisoner/mouse pointer for waaay too long. Perhaps an I-beam would have made things go a bit quicker?

  32. FileBananaSharv on Jan 28, 2008 07:21 PM

From the looks of it, I'm the only one having trouble on the first clue. I must be having a brain freeze. Any salt?

  33. FileAceSolar_Penguin on Jan 28, 2008 07:21 PM

Great puzzle Arnott. Took a few to catch on.

  34. FileGarlicmartinp13 on Jan 28, 2008 07:23 PM

Down to the Jolly One. Any salt for that?

  35. FileRadishreh on Jan 28, 2008 07:23 PM

I've always thought of the arrow in the prisoner clue as a pointer. @#$%!

  36. Ronald-mcd-3EggKilgore on Jan 28, 2008 07:26 PM

    thank you [35]

  37. FileBananabuggy on Jan 28, 2008 07:26 PM

That prisoner isn't a pro. What's the opposite of pro?

  38. FileGarlicmartinp13 on Jan 28, 2008 07:27 PM

    Amateur!

  39. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:28 PM

Yeah, once again... the one clue I was on the fence about is the the troublemaker :) And it was even tough to fit it into the grid.

There's plenty of salt above, but you just need to think of the puzzley (shorter) word that means prisoner.

  40. FileDuckiedavey3 on Jan 28, 2008 07:30 PM

Great puzzle Arnott ... one of the best hypercross puzzles!

  41. FileGarlicmartinp13 on Jan 28, 2008 07:32 PM

I got the prisoner one... I was just being a butthead. :) Any salt on the Big Veggie Guy?

  42. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:33 PM

Thx, davey. And blah, Mutombo et al.

  43. Tog6Pumpkinprincessproton on Jan 28, 2008 07:34 PM

    [41] He only doggy paddles.

  44. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:35 PM

[41] I like salt on my veggies :) Do you know who he is? He usually goes by three words, and then you subtract two words.

    [43] LOL, I don't get that at all :)

  45. FileAcescarver on Jan 28, 2008 07:35 PM

[41] Big being the operative word here.

  46. Tog6Pumpkinprincessproton on Jan 28, 2008 07:37 PM

    [44] Inconceivable!

Best movie ever, if you can figure out what I'm referencing...Don't want to say much more 'cause it would give the answer away.

  47. FileDuckienrkii on Jan 28, 2008 07:36 PM

OHHHHH, the arrow wasn't just a pointer... now the prisoner makes sense

  48. FileDuckienrkii on Jan 28, 2008 07:36 PM

By the way, this puzzle was fantastic!

  49. FileDuckienrkii on Jan 28, 2008 07:37 PM

[44] you didn't get [43]? You have some movie watching to do!

  50. Avatar_profileWatermelonsharr16 on Jan 28, 2008 07:38 PM

    Any salt on the sack??

  51. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Jan 28, 2008 07:39 PM

    Nice puzzle, Arnott!

  52. FileGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Jan 28, 2008 07:41 PM

[43] Best salt ever. Not for those that need the salt, but for those of us who saw the movie and get the quote.

  53. FileEggplantarcbat on Jan 28, 2008 07:41 PM

Very nice concept. I loved the AHA moment!

  54. BearSailboatkarp on Jan 28, 2008 07:42 PM

How about some blimp salt? After 40 minutes I'm finally down to one clue.

  55. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:42 PM

    [48], [51], [53] Thanks.

  56. Tog6Pumpkinprincessproton on Jan 28, 2008 07:43 PM

[54] He vants to suck your bloood.

  57. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:44 PM

[54] Do you have the clue word? If so, you can Google it (along with the other word you need). If not, you'll need to know what Bass is (it's not beer, for example).

  58. BearSailboatkarp on Jan 28, 2008 07:45 PM

[56] [57] Thanks...I used just about every other word but the right one for that last picture.

Great puzzle, Arnott...first challenge I've had for a while on a Hypercross.

  59. FilePancakeshatemachine on Jan 28, 2008 07:45 PM

Great puzzle Arnott...got 'em all except the friggin' prisoner...

  60. BearSailboatkarp on Jan 28, 2008 07:47 PM

[59] Read through the comments again. You'll find there is some really good salt.

  61. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:50 PM

    DAMN THAT PRISONER!!!!

Also, seems I forgot to put a plus sign in front of the "arrow thingie." Not that I needed to, but it certainly would have helped a few people :)

  62. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Jan 28, 2008 07:51 PM

[26] has some GREAT salt for the prisoner!

  63. FileEggmnemonica on Jan 28, 2008 07:51 PM

I liked this one a lot. My initial bafflement was pretty complete, so the aha moment was sweet.

  64. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 07:53 PM

[59] If you prevent that clue from turning you into a VICTim, you will be VICTorious.

  65. FileRadishreh on Jan 28, 2008 07:55 PM

That was indeed a fine, fine hypercross. Didn't get the AHA moment until the second to last clue. Not sure what that says about me...

  66. FilePancakeshatemachine on Jan 28, 2008 07:56 PM

    [64]Finally got it. Good one!

  67. FilePancakesjmcintyre on Jan 28, 2008 08:00 PM

Very nice puzzle, Dave. I was betting on a different guy for #2 at first, and wanted to use the other, more obscure, word for the musical note.

  68. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 08:01 PM

[65] Hee hee. Maybe you like a sunny day? Sweeping the clouds away? Friendly neighbors there, that’s where we meet?

  69. FileApplepantsman on Jan 28, 2008 08:01 PM

Great puzzle! Felt good to work them all out.

  70. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 08:03 PM

[67] Yeah, I made sure to cross that one at the beginning and end so there'd be no doubt. It doesn't help that the other guy has the same number of letters (and I almost used them both, just for the hell of it :)

  71. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 08:07 PM

[69] Yea! Awesome. That *exactly* what I was going for. Thanks.

  72. FilePepperpepperhead on Jan 28, 2008 08:04 PM

akkk will try in the morning

  73. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 28, 2008 08:13 PM

Okay, thanks all. I'm out for the rest of the night.

  74. FilePotatorevchewie on Jan 28, 2008 08:26 PM

Was stuck on the prisoner as well, but [17] salted that one perfectly.

[46] Chu keep using dat word. I do not tink it means whatchu tink it means.
Yep, one of the all-time greatest movies!

Thanks, Arnott. Fun puzzle! With, as has been said, just enough WTF? before the Aha! moment.

  75. Current.deal.avOnionmonocle on Jan 28, 2008 08:36 PM

clever indeed. I love the "ah ha" moment when the theme kicked in. from there is was mostly fill in the blanks... but a few stumped me for a bit. I did it salt free so I'm always happy with that.

  76. FilePotatocavefish on Jan 28, 2008 08:54 PM

jimminy christmas I finally got the aha moment...I am way slow tonight!

  77. FilePumpkinJohn on Jan 28, 2008 09:51 PM

I'm breaking my "no hypercross" policy, just because it's Arnott.

EDIT: And happy I did so. Excellent puzzle!

  78. FilePumpkinJohn on Jan 28, 2008 09:53 PM

If anyone needs the help, that isn't really the correct use of the word on "the arrow thing".

Instead, imagine a slowly blinking vertical line (horizontal, if you're old school)

  79. FileStrawberrysquigsdad on Jan 28, 2008 10:37 PM

OK, I got the prisioner with a guess. Can someone pm me with the way it was supposed to be figured out.

btw [43] best salt ever. loved it!

  80. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 29, 2008 03:57 AM

    [77] Wow. Thanks, John.
[78] Actually it is *also* correct... and looked better to me than the other thing. But LOL, that one damn clue will continue to haunt me :)

  81. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 29, 2008 04:24 AM

Okay, call me a little nuts... I redid the prisoner picture :)

  82. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 29, 2008 05:06 AM

    Hey Dave!!
I'd say this puzzle was nice, fine, excellent, fantastic, wonderful and had a great "Aha!" moment (after I tried fitting the "answers" into different places in the puzzle) - but It's all been said before, and I wouldn't want your head to get too large to fit through the door... :-)
    -Pb

(And I guess I got here after you redid the prisoner puzzle, 'cause I had no problem with it)

  83. FilePepperChupper on Jan 29, 2008 06:59 AM

Man, I couldn't get Toad the Wet Sprocket out of my head for the frog clue! It's not easy being the green giant!

  84. FileRocketkillerkarl2222 on Jan 29, 2008 07:14 AM

Any salt on the first one, for some reason that is the one giving me the hardest time.

  85. FileCheeseburgerQurqirishDragon on Jan 29, 2008 07:18 AM

[80] perhaps instead of a pointer, using a person with a word bubble containing "#$!@!" would have been better?

On second thought, that might have been even worse.

As others said, a great puzzle. Once I figured out the theme (which took me forever - actually the 'suck your blood' salt finally let me get one), the rest was pretty quick.

  86. FileRocketkillerkarl2222 on Jan 29, 2008 07:28 AM

Okay got the first one now...

Now something is mispelled and I have no idea how the sack fits the answer I came up with but then again maybe that is my problem.

I have no idea how the doggy paddle salt fits but I went the route of the movie that was mentioned to answer the one below it. "My name is Enigo Montoya, you killed my father..."

  87. FilePeppercyncat on Jan 29, 2008 09:09 AM

Very enjoyable puzzle! The title threw me off, so far for the longest time. I thought the answers had something to do with the letters in "arnott". When I got the clue with the strawberry, and removed "ar" twice, my answer fitted the given spaces. I removed "n" from the cutting utensil and I was still good. But removing "r", "o", and "ar" from grouch marx yielded too many letters.

Solvers were getting their "AHA" moments left and right, and I was still taking the letters apart.

Finally, I read [31], got the right word, and realized that Arnott wouldn't have squeezed in that syllable there just so we could take off another "r".

Great fun! Thanks, Arnott. And thanks, Bearcat89 [31].

  88. FileAppledingo262 on Jan 29, 2008 08:38 AM

Nothing clicking for the frog/toad/amphibian/whatever it is. Any salt would be gladly tasted.

Had lots of fun on this one Arnott

  89. FilePumpkinJohn on Jan 29, 2008 09:24 AM

[88] Go with your first impression

  90. FileAppledingo262 on Jan 29, 2008 09:47 AM

thanks for the help, John. I was looking at a T for the first letter. Letting go of that helped out tremendously.

  91. FileSailboatyelowflower on Jan 29, 2008 10:10 AM

going to have to say Uncle on this one, no idea at all on what I'm trying to do here. oh well, can't get them all, I'll have better luck on the next one. Thanks for the puzzle and for making me think

  92. Tanga_profile_photoEggWhiteKnight85 on Jan 29, 2008 10:18 AM

I almost never comment on a puzzle, but this is my favorite in a very long time. Outstanding theme, outstanding mix of answer words, outstanding job of cluing those words. Heck, it even had a great title.

Frankly, I got lucky and stumbled on the theme very early (it was the blimp one, and I just happened to look at that one 2nd. Then everything clicked into place.

Very cool. Thanks to Arnott for the fun.

  93. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 29, 2008 11:22 AM

[91] Yelowflower - check your tangagrams

  94. FileEggentropy on Jan 29, 2008 11:38 AM

[81] Oh sure - go and fix the prisoner picture *after* I try about 1066 different answers...

Oh - did I mention this was a great puzzle? Thanks Arnott!

  95. Avatar_profileAppletravelocity on Jan 29, 2008 11:47 AM

[78][80] Technically, the arrow was correct. This term is what Microsoft uses in their documentation, for instance.

  96. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 29, 2008 01:23 PM

    [83], [85] LOL to both.

And I'm almost embarrassed to ask (but not quite)... can someone please TG *me* and explain the whole "doggy paddle" thing?

  97. FilePancakeshatemachine on Jan 29, 2008 01:26 PM

    [96] done

  98. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 29, 2008 01:29 PM

[87] "I thought the answers had something to do with the letters in 'arnott'."

LOL to that, and to your initial solve method :) I'm not sure I *could* post a puzzle like that, let alone bring myself to write one. I think I'd be far too self-conscious.

Glad you eventually came around :) And thanks, yourself.

  99. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 29, 2008 01:39 PM

    [92] Gosh, WhiteKnight... thank *you*.

No matter how confident I may feel about a puzzle beforehand, the whole thing is always, essentially, up in the air until people start trying to solve it. So, believe me, your kind words - and you, too, rkgtanga, dingo, and everyone else - they are truly appreciated.

  100. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jan 29, 2008 01:44 PM

[94] 1066 different answers - I LOVE it! Subtlest salt ever.

All I really did was add a plus before the "arrow" and add an arrow to the "prisoner." It wasn't so much a fix as it was fine tuning :)
