For [1]: the guy in 5 is a comedian; he was in a movie based on a boardgame, if you need more of a Clue. The guy in 7 can be recognized from his wristband. The guy in 11 is a weatherman.
GEEZ!! That was harder then it had to be. Thanks [24] I still don't know how the image relates to the answer. I hate them too. They're kind of the opposite of 11.
Thank you all for the comments. This was my first puzzle and yes, although it is obtuse to those that don't know the theme first hand, I had fun building it. Your comments will help me build future (and hopefully wider audience targeted) puzzles.
Ohhh! That's not Benny Hill, that's Vir! Got #1. Now, assuming I've got all the others right (and no way to tell yet), all I need is #2. The E made out of grates.
105th! Ugh... disappointing for a subject I know so well. I was really thrown off the Lance/Cheryl clue (I was sure is was "owner" - as in cache owner). I still have no idea how the actual answer relates to the clue - can somebody TG me with an explanation?
I know the subject well but I'm drawing a total blank on the Lance/Sheryl one since I don't know that subject at all. so far all the salt on that one just makes me feel stupid not still not getting it.
Okay, this gets my vote for Oddest Hypercross That I Should Hate But Somehow Still Enjoyed.
Just weird from the get-go. First off, fairly obscure subject. I knew NOTHING about this until tonight... and might have been annoyed by having to look up everything...
... but some of those clues are WONDERFUL. And then some are ridiculously obvious - like, really? Is that right?
And yet... I think, maybe, this is kinda perfect - what a Hypercross should actually be. A nice mix of those two.
Yeah, I wish the word set was either more Googleable, or less obscure, but I was able to find most of those words, and guess at a few others from the grid.
Side note: this is truly the IMPORTANCE of the grid, helping you along with weird themes. I wish the words interlocked better here - you can see, for example, that the Lance Armstrong word could have crossed the top two across answers right next to where the E word is now - crossing it's 3rd and 5th letters. You'd have to move the E word, of course, but since the Armstrong one was not only one of the trickier clues, but also one of the harder words to search for, this would have really helped.
I'm normally NOT the guy who enjoys learning about a new subject *through a puzzle*... but the whimsy of some of these clues won me over in the end. (although that stuffed bear one... what the heck? What an odd *type* of clue)
I wasn't sure where this was going at first, but the 4th one was all I needed to get my mind pointing in the right direction. The funny thing was, when I looked at the Lance/Sheryl clue, that was the easiest one for me to solve. Of course, the fact that our Scoutmaster is an avid participant in this probably helped.
Very hard since I really had no idea how these clues went together. Good use of a theme I just happen not to know the theme. Ditto what Arnott said about the mix of obvious and hard clues.
Thanks [86]... that helps because I've never heard of this... I'm stuck on the 1st one and the Lance/Sheryl one still... will have to do some more research
Ok... think I figured out the 1st one... thanks to Wikipedia... otherwise I would be really stuck! LOL
I take it there's no way to just see the answers after the first 24 hours are up like in the other kinds of puzzles . . . if there is, please let me know.
This is embarassing . . . I can't get the one with the teddy bear! The cross letter is "H", right? If so, I've been combing the theme-based sites, and while I find a six-letter word starting with "H" (great on gas mileage), it makes no sense with the picture and the puzzle won't take it. I need a TG with heavy salt. Or the answer.
Salt on the people in 5, 7, 11?
I thought i was good at these scavenger hunts, but the one with the plates and the weatherman I'm just not getting.
3rd. That was...a little opaque for someone who doesn't know the hobby in question. (Wikipedia helps a little.)
I've got all but the two people talking
For [1]: the guy in 5 is a comedian; he was in a movie based on a boardgame, if you need more of a Clue. The guy in 7 can be recognized from his wristband. The guy in 11 is a weatherman.
What is the E made of?
[6] ducts
I don't get the girlfriend
who is the weather guy?
[7] Sheryl Crow
esckey figguered you would be done teegee too
[9] I got that far. I'm not putting together. Maybe after I post this...
Oh boy, that Sheryl Crow one got me.
this was hard even if you know the terms. but still fun.
Got it. 21st. I thought I would be done a lot sooner as I'm very familiar with the subject.
Any salt on the thing that looks like a pie chart? I think that may be where my problem lies...
any salt on the weather man and the plate people?
[14] i think it is an album cover
[14] TG sent
Whew. Just got 28th without knowing the subject matter.
Wikipedia, as always, is your friend.
[15] he's on NBC and the food network. What's the guy offering to do with the two plates?
salt on the e?
[20] another name for the duct covers
[19] thanks...I got those, I just cant put it all together
[20] The whitespace is the significant part of the pic.
(I was trying to figure out what the black things were...)
I got 31st and would have gotten it sooner but I couldn't get 7 because I hate those and had blocked it from my mind.
Salt on the Sheryl Crow one?
is #4 the theme? just so I know if I am completely off...
[22] What's another name for a plate?
GEEZ!! That was harder then it had to be. Thanks [24] I still don't know how the image relates to the answer. I hate them too. They're kind of the opposite of 11.

[25] Pretend you're Lance and describe Sheryl.
I am so lost on many of these
time to go night
[29] Overall I liked it. I actually like 11, except I have no clue who that person is. I had to take complete guesses on 7 and 8.
[27] THANKYOU! my mind got locked in what you can do at one of these and boy was I not getting it.
[26] yes
I love this game, uh I mean activity.
i got the weatherman and feel good about everything else... not taking... TG?
[26] Yes.
[30] hahahaha I get it. I would have gotten it if Sheryl didn't have a reply. That was too distracting.
[30] Now I get it. I thought it was a type of management he was handling her with...
I figured out the Jeep, but only because I had the first letter and theme.
TG please, everything fits and makes so much sense but won't take
Who's in #1?
[41] Wish I knew too
I can only assume I'm wrong on the Lance one. Help?
[41] & [42] will trade #1 for Lance
[41] [42] If you were to check out an Animal House, he might smell kind of fishy
Not much fun without knowing anything about the topic, an for me wasn't much fun even after figuring out the theme.
[45] thank you so much!
For the Lance one, I couldn't get ATCF out of my mind. Since they broke up, this term applies but doesn't fit.
[48] ATCF? I am still lost...
[49] Way too salty
Finally got it. I've never heard of this hobby before.
still stuck on lance
geez, no TG help? i've got all the answers that make great sense
Lance and Sheryl, possessive
got lance. need to figure out what else I have wrong
[54] TG sent.
Okay, I'm not sure how [49]is salty. And like everyone else...still stuck on the Lance/Sheryl one.
nevermind the TG, a horrible instance of misspelling
Is #1 not Benny Hill? Maybe that's why I can't get that clue.
ETA: Never mind. It's not Benny Hill, it's Vir.
Tangagram, please, on Lance & Sheryl.
I have the same problem Kirklimon did... everything seems to fit, but it won't take the answers. Any TG out there?
I'm stuck on #1, #2, and #3. I *think* I may have all the rest, but of course I won't be sure until I can submit.
[55] check your TG's
Any help for Lance?
[57] I edited my post which spelled out what ATCF meant, but wasn't helpful to me, in any case
Wow, I am really struggling with this one though I've been an avid participant in this hobby for YEARS!
What does football have to do with anything??
[66] What position might he be playing?
Got them all except for the lance/sheryl and I've got over 1400 finds... Help please!
[68] He's a bloke, and she's his bird.
Please help with lance?
It just goes to show what a small mind Lance has to make such a diminishing statement that minimizes Sheryl. I have so little respect for that.
[69] not much help... I'm blanking
[71] thanks!
Could someone please send me a TG with some salt on the Lance/Sheryl one?
[67] Ok, that kinda doesn't seem like a word that fits the theme, but my answer for Lance doesn't work with it?
Maybe the host of Dirty Jobs would have been better....just dawned on me... ;)
[74] see clue 71, and hopefully that will get you on the same wave
71 did it for me. ugh! Thanks!
Ohhh! That's not Benny Hill, that's Vir! Got #1. Now, assuming I've got all the others right (and no way to tell yet), all I need is #2. The E made out of grates.

[80] TG sent.
I'm one of those who can't get the Lance/Cheryl clue. Help?
Help on the bear and camera one? I thought I had them all, but may be stuck on this one...
I know the subject well but I'm drawing a total blank on the Lance/Sheryl one since I don't know that subject at all. so far all the salt on that one just makes me feel stupid not still not getting it.
*slaps forehead... got it. good one.
Wow.

http://www.geocaching.com/about/cache_types.aspx should help anyone who comes along and is struggling

Ok... think I figured out the 1st one... thanks to Wikipedia... otherwise I would be really stuck! LOL
Is there 2 words in here that are similar or am I off track? for 4 and 5 I get almost the same word.
nevermind... I think I figured out where I went wrong
Arnott, thanks for your help (new location for Lance clue).
I had heard of this before tonight, but in more of a road-rally context (so didn't know the theme or anything about the actual "sport")
Today has been one of my worst showings ever. I only got one of the 4 puzzles last night - and I was too late for the bonus points on that one!
Still nothing on the Lance/Cheryl one, can someone TG me?
Missing 2... the Armstrong/Crow and the actor/tie.
Salt please... the other salts don't seem to shed any light for me.
Edit: Got the actor/tie... just by guessing. Some entries are not one word or a true complete word. But still missing crow one. Hmmm....
Edit: good god... got the lance one... based on my last statement above
can someone please TG me on the lance picture
Anyone???
I have them all, even the hard one, but it won't go, any HELP!
I take it there's no way to just see the answers after the first 24 hours are up like in the other kinds of puzzles . . . if there is, please let me know.

[96] think nanny cam
Weird....I thought Lance/Sheryl was one of the easier ones. I guess I agree with pretty much everything Arnott said.
