  2. Picture-303Pumpkingodard on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:10 PM

I thought i was good at these scavenger hunts, but the one with the plates and the weatherman I'm just not getting.

  3. SouthparkPepperTahnan on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:11 PM

3rd. That was...a little opaque for someone who doesn't know the hobby in question. (Wikipedia helps a little.)

  4. OctopusPeppercomishcraig on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:12 PM

I've got all but the two people talking

  5. SouthparkPepperTahnan on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:13 PM

For [1]: the guy in 5 is a comedian; he was in a movie based on a boardgame, if you need more of a Clue. The guy in 7 can be recognized from his wristband. The guy in 11 is a weatherman.

  6. FileAcescarver on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:15 PM

What is the E made of?

  7. FileDuckieescKey on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:17 PM

    I don't get the girlfriend

  8. FilePumpkinsuigeneris on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:18 PM

  11. FileDuckieescKey on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:20 PM

[9] I got that far. I'm not putting together. Maybe after I post this...

  12. Picture-303Pumpkingodard on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:21 PM

Oh boy, that Sheryl Crow one got me.

this was hard even if you know the terms. but still fun.

  13. OctopusPeppercomishcraig on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:23 PM

Got it. 21st. I thought I would be done a lot sooner as I'm very familiar with the subject.

  14. Avatar_profileEggplantrdunlap1125 on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:23 PM

Any salt on the thing that looks like a pie chart? I think that may be where my problem lies...

  15. FilePumpkinsuigeneris on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:25 PM

any salt on the weather man and the plate people?

  16. FilePumpkinsuigeneris on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:26 PM

[14] i think it is an album cover

  17. FileDuckieescKey on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:26 PM

    [14] TG sent

  18. FilePumpkinarcbat on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:26 PM

Whew. Just got 28th without knowing the subject matter.

Wikipedia, as always, is your friend.

  19. OctopusPeppercomishcraig on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:27 PM

[15] he's on NBC and the food network. What's the guy offering to do with the two plates?

  20. FileAcescarver on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:28 PM

    salt on the e?

  21. FileDuckieescKey on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:29 PM

[20] another name for the duct covers

  22. FilePumpkinsuigeneris on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:29 PM

[19] thanks...I got those, I just cant put it all together

  23. FilePumpkinarcbat on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:29 PM

[20] The whitespace is the significant part of the pic.
(I was trying to figure out what the black things were...)

  24. Error_1PancakesQwertyToo on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:31 PM

I got 31st and would have gotten it sooner but I couldn't get 7 because I hate those and had blocked it from my mind.

  25. Avatar_profilePlummoses on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:32 PM

Salt on the Sheryl Crow one?

  26. FileXylophoneQurqirishDragon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:33 PM

is #4 the theme? just so I know if I am completely off...

  27. OctopusPeppercomishcraig on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:34 PM

    [22] What's another name for a plate?

  28. FileDuckieescKey on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:35 PM

GEEZ!! That was harder then it had to be. Thanks [24] I still don't know how the image relates to the answer. I hate them too. They're kind of the opposite of 11.

  29. FileRocketBerix on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:36 PM

Thank you all for the comments. This was my first puzzle and yes, although it is obtuse to those that don't know the theme first hand, I had fun building it. Your comments will help me build future (and hopefully wider audience targeted) puzzles.

  30. Avatar_profileEggplantrdunlap1125 on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:39 PM

[25] Pretend you're Lance and describe Sheryl.

  31. FilePepperpepperhead on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:40 PM

I am so lost on many of these

    time to go night

  32. FileDuckieescKey on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:40 PM

[29] Overall I liked it. I actually like 11, except I have no clue who that person is. I had to take complete guesses on 7 and 8.

  33. FilePumpkinsuigeneris on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:40 PM

[27] THANKYOU! my mind got locked in what you can do at one of these and boy was I not getting it.

  34. FilePlumdougtaylor1 on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:42 PM

    [26] yes

I love this game, uh I mean activity.

  35. FileApplekirklimon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:41 PM

i got the weatherman and feel good about everything else... not taking... TG?

  36. FilePumpkinarcbat on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:41 PM

    [26] Yes.

  37. FileDuckieescKey on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:41 PM

[30] hahahaha I get it. I would have gotten it if Sheryl didn't have a reply. That was too distracting.

  38. FilePlumdougtaylor1 on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:43 PM

[30] Now I get it. I thought it was a type of management he was handling her with...

  39. FilePlumdougtaylor1 on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:46 PM

I figured out the Jeep, but only because I had the first letter and theme.

  40. FileApplekirklimon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:47 PM

TG please, everything fits and makes so much sense but won't take

  41. FilePepperslog on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:51 PM

    Who's in #1?

  42. FilePumpkinBluefaith on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:54 PM

    [41] Wish I knew too

  43. FilePumpkinperihelion on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:55 PM

I can only assume I'm wrong on the Lance one. Help?

  44. FileCarrotwarrenzevon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:57 PM

    [41] & [42] will trade #1 for Lance

  45. FilePepperslobeavis on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:57 PM

[41] [42] If you were to check out an Animal House, he might smell kind of fishy

  46. Avatar_profileCarrotalchemist on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:58 PM

Not much fun without knowing anything about the topic, an for me wasn't much fun even after figuring out the theme.

  47. FilePumpkinBluefaith on Thu Mar 13, 2008 07:59 PM

    [45] thank you so much!

  48. FilePepperslobeavis on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:08 PM

For the Lance one, I couldn't get ATCF out of my mind. Since they broke up, this term applies but doesn't fit.

  49. FileCarrotwarrenzevon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:05 PM

[48] ATCF? I am still lost...

  50. FilePlumdougtaylor1 on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:03 PM

    [49] Way too salty

  51. FilePepperslog on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:06 PM

Finally got it. I've never heard of this hobby before.

  52. FileDuckienrkii on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:07 PM

    still stuck on lance

  53. FileApplekirklimon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:08 PM

geez, no TG help? i've got all the answers that make great sense

  54. FileApplekirklimon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:09 PM

    Lance and Sheryl, possessive

  55. FileDuckienrkii on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:09 PM

got lance. need to figure out what else I have wrong

  56. Donimo_pirate_beatlesEggDonimo on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:13 PM

    [54] TG sent.

  57. Avatar_profileBananakiddoette on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:14 PM

Okay, I'm not sure how [49]is salty. And like everyone else...still stuck on the Lance/Sheryl one.

  58. FileApplekirklimon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:14 PM

nevermind the TG, a horrible instance of misspelling

  59. Avatar_profileAceGertSoB on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:38 PM

Is #1 not Benny Hill? Maybe that's why I can't get that clue.

ETA: Never mind. It's not Benny Hill, it's Vir.

  60. BeerAcejaniebellboo on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:16 PM

Tangagram, please, on Lance & Sheryl.

  61. Avatar_profileBananaLinamarae on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:17 PM

I have the same problem Kirklimon did... everything seems to fit, but it won't take the answers. Any TG out there?

  62. Avatar_profileAceGertSoB on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:18 PM

I'm stuck on #1, #2, and #3. I *think* I may have all the rest, but of course I won't be sure until I can submit.

  63. FileCarrotwarrenzevon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:19 PM

    [55] check your TG's

  64. PumpkinEggCrazyKids on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:19 PM

    Any help for Lance?

  65. FileCarrotwarrenzevon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:20 PM

[57] I edited my post which spelled out what ATCF meant, but wasn't helpful to me, in any case

  66. FilePotatoDoomDahDoomDoom on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:20 PM

Wow, I am really struggling with this one though I've been an avid participant in this hobby for YEARS!

What does football have to do with anything??

  67. BeerAcejaniebellboo on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:23 PM

[66] What position might he be playing?

  68. Avatar_profileGarlicjglasson on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:25 PM

Got them all except for the lance/sheryl and I've got over 1400 finds... Help please!

  69. Avatar_profileAceGertSoB on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:27 PM

    [68] He's a bloke, and she's his bird.

  70. FilePumpkinperihelion on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:26 PM

    Please help with lance?

  71. FileDuckienrkii on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:30 PM

It just goes to show what a small mind Lance has to make such a diminishing statement that minimizes Sheryl. I have so little respect for that.

  72. Avatar_profileGarlicjglasson on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:30 PM

[69] not much help... I'm blanking

  73. FileCarrotwarrenzevon on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:31 PM

    [71] thanks!

  74. BeerAcejaniebellboo on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:31 PM

Could someone please send me a TG with some salt on the Lance/Sheryl one?

  75. FilePotatoDoomDahDoomDoom on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:31 PM

[67] Ok, that kinda doesn't seem like a word that fits the theme, but my answer for Lance doesn't work with it?

  76. FileRocketBerix on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:33 PM

Maybe the host of Dirty Jobs would have been better....just dawned on me... ;)

  77. FileDuckienrkii on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:33 PM

[74] see clue 71, and hopefully that will get you on the same wave

  78. Avatar_profileGarlicjglasson on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:35 PM

71 did it for me. ugh! Thanks!

  79. Avatar_profileAceGertSoB on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:36 PM

Ohhh! That's not Benny Hill, that's Vir! Got #1. Now, assuming I've got all the others right (and no way to tell yet), all I need is #2. The E made out of grates.

  80. FilePotatoDoomDahDoomDoom on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:39 PM

105th! Ugh... disappointing for a subject I know so well. I was really thrown off the Lance/Cheryl clue (I was sure is was "owner" - as in cache owner). I still have no idea how the actual answer relates to the clue - can somebody TG me with an explanation?

  81. Avatar_profileAceGertSoB on Thu Mar 13, 2008 08:43 PM

    [80] TG sent.

  82. FileEggplantmrrlobo on Thu Mar 13, 2008 09:10 PM

I'm one of those who can't get the Lance/Cheryl clue. Help?

  83. FileAppleannberg on Thu Mar 13, 2008 09:11 PM

Help on the bear and camera one? I thought I had them all, but may be stuck on this one...

  84. Current.deal.avOnionmonocle on Thu Mar 13, 2008 09:48 PM

I know the subject well but I'm drawing a total blank on the Lance/Sheryl one since I don't know that subject at all. so far all the salt on that one just makes me feel stupid not still not getting it.

*slaps forehead... got it. good one.

  85. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Fri Mar 14, 2008 07:15 PM

    Wow.

Okay, this gets my vote for Oddest Hypercross That I Should Hate But Somehow Still Enjoyed.

Just weird from the get-go. First off, fairly obscure subject. I knew NOTHING about this until tonight... and might have been annoyed by having to look up everything...

... but some of those clues are WONDERFUL. And then some are ridiculously obvious - like, really? Is that right?

And yet... I think, maybe, this is kinda perfect - what a Hypercross should actually be. A nice mix of those two.

Yeah, I wish the word set was either more Googleable, or less obscure, but I was able to find most of those words, and guess at a few others from the grid.

Side note: this is truly the IMPORTANCE of the grid, helping you along with weird themes. I wish the words interlocked better here - you can see, for example, that the Lance Armstrong word could have crossed the top two across answers right next to where the E word is now - crossing it's 3rd and 5th letters. You'd have to move the E word, of course, but since the Armstrong one was not only one of the trickier clues, but also one of the harder words to search for, this would have really helped.

I'm normally NOT the guy who enjoys learning about a new subject *through a puzzle*... but the whimsy of some of these clues won me over in the end. (although that stuffed bear one... what the heck? What an odd *type* of clue)

  86. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Fri Mar 14, 2008 06:22 AM

I wasn't sure where this was going at first, but the 4th one was all I needed to get my mind pointing in the right direction. The funny thing was, when I looked at the Lance/Sheryl clue, that was the easiest one for me to solve. Of course, the fact that our Scoutmaster is an avid participant in this probably helped.

http://www.geocaching.com/about/cache_types.aspx should help anyone who comes along and is struggling

  87. FileAppleSunnydale on Fri Mar 14, 2008 07:02 AM

Very hard since I really had no idea how these clues went together. Good use of a theme I just happen not to know the theme. Ditto what Arnott said about the mix of obvious and hard clues.

  88. Cuicocha2Sailboathokie98 on Fri Mar 14, 2008 08:19 AM

Thanks [86]... that helps because I've never heard of this... I'm stuck on the 1st one and the Lance/Sheryl one still... will have to do some more research

Ok... think I figured out the 1st one... thanks to Wikipedia... otherwise I would be really stuck! LOL

  89. Cuicocha2Sailboathokie98 on Fri Mar 14, 2008 08:21 AM

Is there 2 words in here that are similar or am I off track? for 4 and 5 I get almost the same word.

nevermind... I think I figured out where I went wrong

  90. FileXylophoneQurqirishDragon on Fri Mar 14, 2008 09:35 AM

Arnott, thanks for your help (new location for Lance clue).

I had heard of this before tonight, but in more of a road-rally context (so didn't know the theme or anything about the actual "sport")

Today has been one of my worst showings ever. I only got one of the 4 puzzles last night - and I was too late for the bonus points on that one!

  91. FileRocketkillerkarl2222 on Fri Mar 14, 2008 10:31 AM

Still nothing on the Lance/Cheryl one, can someone TG me?

  92. FilePlumseasidebruin on Fri Mar 14, 2008 05:17 PM

    Missing 2... the Armstrong/Crow and the actor/tie.
Salt please... the other salts don't seem to shed any light for me.

Edit: Got the actor/tie... just by guessing. Some entries are not one word or a true complete word. But still missing crow one. Hmmm....

Edit: good god... got the lance one... based on my last statement above

  93. EdgewoodSailboatsplat169 on Fri Mar 14, 2008 06:32 PM

can someone please TG me on the lance picture

    Anyone???

  94. FileTomatotlmitch7 on Fri Mar 14, 2008 06:49 PM

I have them all, even the hard one, but it won't go, any HELP!

  95. SmalloldvelvetnoseRocketsdharing on Fri Mar 14, 2008 08:25 PM

I take it there's no way to just see the answers after the first 24 hours are up like in the other kinds of puzzles . . . if there is, please let me know.

  96. SmalloldvelvetnoseRocketsdharing on Fri Mar 14, 2008 09:05 PM

This is embarassing . . . I can't get the one with the teddy bear! The cross letter is "H", right? If so, I've been combing the theme-based sites, and while I find a six-letter word starting with "H" (great on gas mileage), it makes no sense with the picture and the puzzle won't take it. I need a TG with heavy salt. Or the answer.

  97. FilePlumseasidebruin on Fri Mar 14, 2008 11:10 PM

    [96] think nanny cam

  98. FileOnionPatanga on Fri Jun 17, 2011 01:34 PM

Weird....I thought Lance/Sheryl was one of the easier ones. I guess I agree with pretty much everything Arnott said.
