Remember, each picture represents a SINGLE WORD, and the hidden animal will be
spelled out IN CORRECT ORDER inside that word.

Also, in case this wasn't clear, no letter is used twice. DAGGER, for example, does *not* hide the animal DEER, even though D E R does appear in the correct order.

    Have fun!

    **** EDIT: TYPO FIXED! ****

(this has also rearranged the grid a LOT - about 7 answers had to move... man, talk about a typo :))

EXTRA EDIT: Two Years Later :)
I came back to this puzzle to convert all the old PNG images into JPEGs, and I just couldn't resist "fixing" this one. So I deleted a clue. You'll read a LOT about it in the comments below, as it was the main troublemaker clue (which is why I've removed it years later).

The Clue was for the word PENULTIMATE. And what I did was reuse (with permission) a OWW that renfurdson wrote the year before: picture of a PEN + picture of a FRISBEE with the words "game played with this" undeneath it. I framed that in a square, and below that I added, "Remember this old puzzle from renfurdson? I think it was the next-to-last puzzle in a puzzlethon."

In addition to throwing some people, finding the animal name was tough, even after "solving" the image. And for kind of a good reason: it's not really an animal name you commonly think of... though it's completely fair, IMO.

Fair... but not fun. So it's gone now :)

    (The animal was puma)

  2. FileTomatoMurdoctor on Feb 28, 2008 07:10 PM

Wow... this is tough. I'm about halfway done, but these are a challenge.

  3. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:10 PM

    :)

    A good challenge, I hope.

  4. FileTomatoMurdoctor on Feb 28, 2008 07:11 PM

Does the 7-letter down answer towards the left side have a double-letter by mistake?

  5. Donimo_pirate_beatlesTomatoDonimo on Feb 28, 2008 07:12 PM

    Awesome puzzle! Best Hypercross ever!

I think number two is misspelled.

  6. FileTomatoMurdoctor on Feb 28, 2008 07:17 PM

Got 6th. Was a lot of fun... difficult, but not frustratingly so.

  7. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 10:23 PM

    [4] ARGH!!!!! yes, it does.

    **** EDIT: TYPO FIXED! ****

(this has also rearranged the grid a LOT - about 7 answers had to move... man, talk about a typo :))

  8. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Feb 28, 2008 07:18 PM

Is one of the answers a mythological creature?

  9. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 10:24 PM

Damn, I can fix it, but it's gonna mess people up maybe.

    **** EDIT: TYPO FIXED! ****

(this has also rearranged the grid a LOT - about 7 answers had to move... man, talk about a typo :))

  10. Phi3CornPhilana on Feb 28, 2008 07:19 PM

This was really, really fun! But yes, there's a problem with the second answer.

  11. FilePancakesepaz on Feb 28, 2008 07:19 PM

    8th. Fun puzzle!

  12. SouthparkPepperTahnan on Feb 28, 2008 07:19 PM

[4] and [5] are correct. Otherwise, this was quite interesting, certainly innovative.

  13. FilePumpkinBluefaith on Feb 28, 2008 07:20 PM

[8] I thought so at first too, but these are all real

  14. FileSailboatDAbrames on Feb 28, 2008 07:21 PM

    [4] Yes, yes it does.

  15. FileCheeseburgerQurqirishDragon on Feb 28, 2008 07:21 PM

    #15!
Lots of fun. I enjoyed it a lot.

  16. FileEggplantsuigeneris on Feb 28, 2008 07:23 PM

    Boom! 19th. Great puzzle.

  17. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 10:24 PM

LOL... crap. Too involved to fix it now, without really messing things up. Have to move, like, 7 different clues :)

    Sorry, all.

    **** EDIT: TYPO FIXED! ****

(this has also rearranged the grid a LOT - in fact, it WAS 7 answers that had to move... man, talk about a typo :))

  18. FileEggplantTintin on Feb 28, 2008 07:22 PM

Loving this. Have all but AKA Don Corleone. Are we looking for the actor?

  19. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 10:24 PM

Well, fortunately, it seem to be an easy, very gettable typo thingie, since people seem to be solving it okay.

Will fix later in the archives, I guess.

    **** EDIT: TYPO FIXED! ****

    (did it at midnight::)

  20. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Feb 28, 2008 07:24 PM

Problem getting the products. Thought I had an animal that fit the other letters I had, but that doesn't work. Or something else is wrong...

  21. FileEggplantsuigeneris on Feb 28, 2008 07:24 PM

[17] Wasn't that hard to figure out. I don't think it hurts anything, especially with the note of the error above.

  22. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:24 PM

[18] No. I would always say "actor" or some such if that were the case.

  23. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on Feb 28, 2008 07:25 PM

I've got them all filled in, but it still says something's wrong. Ack!

  24. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:25 PM

[5] Thanks, by the way :)

  25. Avatar_profilePlumdevjoe on Feb 28, 2008 07:25 PM

The first animal is misspelled. It uses one more letter from the main word than it ought to.

  26. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Feb 28, 2008 07:26 PM

    Jello?

  27. Charo_white_bgBananawillco on Feb 28, 2008 07:26 PM

Also, one of the answers is spelled incorrectly.

But, yeah, you guys saw that already.

  28. FileDuckiedavey3 on Feb 28, 2008 07:26 PM

Wow ... great puzzle Arnott (even with the slight mess-up on the wintry scene).

  29. Picture-303Pumpkingodard on Feb 28, 2008 07:27 PM

I thought i had every answer including the misspelled one. Don't know where i'm wrong.

  30. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Feb 28, 2008 07:27 PM

    Help!!!

  31. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 10:25 PM

    [26] Not Jello, Jell-O

[25], [27] Yes :) Been noted several times now, thanks (rub it in, why doncha?)

    **** EDIT: TYPO FIXED! ****

  32. FilePumpkinBigSlick on Feb 28, 2008 07:27 PM

Any salt on the renfurdson puzzle? It's not like that's the only one I can't get, but without help, I will never get that one 'cause I don't remember the puzzle and can't put anything together that makes sense for it.

  33. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:28 PM

[29], [30] TG me your answers if you want.

  34. Picture-303Pumpkingodard on Feb 28, 2008 07:31 PM

Ugh, I finally got it. The yellow arrow one was messing me up. I'm embarrassed to say what my answer was.

The really nice thing about this puzzle is, once you get a couple of answers, the others fall into place. It would be impossible to do every answer on its own. So this puzzle really takes advantage of the crossword format.

  35. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Jul 07, 2008 02:53 AM

[32] If you don't know the game/sport people play with the Frisbee, it's gonna be tough. That said, there's actually some salt in the clue itself, too.

  36. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:30 PM

[34] LOL. Now I really wanna know :)

  37. FileEggplantTintin on Feb 28, 2008 07:30 PM

[22] Thanks. Funny how obvious the answer is after I got the actor's name out my head. That one was all fun.

  38. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Feb 28, 2008 07:31 PM

    [33] sent

  39. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Feb 28, 2008 07:32 PM

    [31] THANKS! That's the salt I needed!

    42nd!

  40. Avatar_profileAceGertSoB on Feb 28, 2008 07:34 PM

I've got all but the renfurdson. Any salt on that?

NM, I got it by looking up frisbee on WP, to see what games are played with it, went with the only one that seemed to fit, and it worked.

  41. Avatar_profileBananakiddoette on Feb 28, 2008 07:32 PM

Sweet! 45th. This is the first time in a long time I have gotten extra points. Great puzzle!

  42. FileSailboatRunAmuck on Feb 28, 2008 07:33 PM

Two top 100s tonight - glad I stopped by instead of waiting til the following afternoon, which I usually do

  43. Pix__8SailboatBanana80 on Feb 28, 2008 07:33 PM

anyone else think it's unfair to use a clue from a puzzlethon? I came after those.. don't think there has been one since I joined, and I don't get the clue... salt? puh-lease? :)

  44. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:40 PM

[40] This is the next to last time I'm gonna say that you need to know what the sport/game is people play with Frisbees. They have organized leagues for it and stuff.

  45. Avatar_profileAceGertSoB on Feb 28, 2008 07:35 PM

[8], I know what you mean, that was the first answer I had, but look again and you'll find a real animal in there.

  46. FileEggplantarcbat on Feb 28, 2008 07:36 PM

Well, other than the mizztake, I really liked it. ;)

  47. FileSailboatyelowflower on Feb 28, 2008 07:36 PM

[35] yeah it gets tough when you get too specific for folks who are not as well informed as you are...cant get that one or the 16th one...

  48. FilePumpkinBigSlick on Feb 28, 2008 07:37 PM

[35] Ah, that sport, now to find the animal.

  49. FileSailboatyelowflower on Feb 28, 2008 07:37 PM

[44] please tell me you are not referring to the Nerd Frisbee League? :)

  50. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:39 PM

[43] LOL, Banana... you didn't have to be around then, you just need to solve it now :) I'd guess most people weren't around for that puzzle, but if you were, that doesn't necessarly help you or give you any advantage.

It was, I thought, a cool way to clue the word I needed. But no extra knowledge is needed to solve this one. Other than having to know what the Frisbee sport is, but, really... that's the next to last time I'm gonna say it.

  51. FilePumpkinBigSlick on Feb 28, 2008 07:39 PM

OK, I only need the two 3-letter ones up in the upper right-hand corner. For the detective, unless I have it totally wrong, there is only 1 combo that works, and that ain't no animal. I need to use his *first* name right?

  52. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:41 PM

[51] Right. First name. Like it says in the clue :)

Sheesh, you let one typo slip by...

  53. FileEggplantarcbat on Feb 28, 2008 07:41 PM

[51] His hat is also a clue, just not a very big one.

  54. FileSailboatyelowflower on Feb 28, 2008 07:41 PM

any salt on the "Who ya gonna call"?

  55. Avatar_profileGrapesgamergal on Feb 28, 2008 07:41 PM

Got'em all! Fun puzzle! The perfect amount of challenge! Thanks!

  56. FileSailboatyelowflower on Feb 28, 2008 07:42 PM

    please?

  57. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:42 PM

[54] Did you not see that movie with Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Sigourney Weaver..? Or the sequel..?

  58. FileSailboatyelowflower on Feb 28, 2008 07:43 PM

yes as a matter of fact I did, I know the name of the movie, cannot for the life of me work it into an animal

  59. FilePumpkinBigSlick on Feb 28, 2008 07:46 PM

[52] Argh! I was looking at the 3-letter one down for the detective not across! IDIOT!

Edit: I wasn't trying to give you grief Arnott! Really! I was just being stupid! Got 'em all now. Great puzzle!

  60. FileStrawberryctanner on Feb 28, 2008 07:46 PM

You solved this puzzle in 0 seconds and were the 79th Tanga member to solve it. You earned 42 points for solving this.

Whoo hoo! First time in top 100! Much thanks to assistance from my wife.

  61. FileSailboatyelowflower on Feb 28, 2008 07:51 PM

I hate getting hung up on ONE word and having to leave it unsolved
    ggrr
    oh well, that's life

    good night

  62. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:51 PM

[58] I believe that one is the hardest one.

  63. Pix__8SailboatBanana80 on Feb 28, 2008 07:52 PM

    [50] :) I get it now, thanks to #44
I was trying to work with "calligraphy"...

  64. FileAppledingo262 on Feb 28, 2008 07:52 PM

[61] I'm with you - Have the answer to the frisbee one, but can't get a conversion to an animal

  65. FilePancakeshatemachine on Feb 28, 2008 07:53 PM

[62] no, that #$&*^@ frisbee one is...

  66. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 07:54 PM

    [65] Oh. Sorry.

  67. FilePancakeshatemachine on Feb 28, 2008 07:55 PM

[66] LOL...I got the others quickly and I've been stuck on that one for so long...

  68. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Feb 28, 2008 07:55 PM

Still lost on the frisbee :( Am I the biggest idiot on the site or something?

  69. FilePancakeshatemachine on Feb 28, 2008 07:56 PM

    [68]no, I'm with ya....

  70. FileAppledingo262 on Feb 28, 2008 07:56 PM

Started the hard way and came to the answer right off - 96th!

  71. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Feb 28, 2008 07:57 PM

    97th :(

  72. FilePumpkinBigSlick on Feb 28, 2008 07:58 PM

[67] [68] That sport is like the best ever! There's nothing better!

  73. FilePancakeshatemachine on Feb 28, 2008 07:58 PM

You solved this puzzle in 0 seconds and were the 99th Tanga member to solve it.

Just in the nick of time...I finally guessed the frisbee correctly. Still don't know what the clue is.

  74. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Feb 28, 2008 07:58 PM

[72] I knew what sport it was and I still don't get how it works.

  75. FilePumpkinBigSlick on Feb 28, 2008 07:59 PM

[74] The animal goes by at least 3 different names here in North America. The one you are looking for is (to me) the least common of the three.

  76. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Feb 28, 2008 08:01 PM

[75] I know what it is and I still don't see how it fits into "penextreme."

  77. FilePepperpepperhead on Feb 28, 2008 08:04 PM

dude! this is fun but a tad hard, but my computer keeps locking up
so argh on points for me

but a nice and different puzzle

  78. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Feb 28, 2008 08:04 PM

[76] Or I COULD be the biggest idiot who ever came to this site. :( Wow. I need to eat. Or sleep. Or bang my head against the wall until I've got a pulpy mess sitting atop my neck.

  79. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 08:05 PM

[76] "Extreme" is incorrect. But, really, that's the next to last time I'm gonna say it.

  80. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 08:05 PM

[78] LOFL! Thanks, blah. I needed that.

  81. FileCarrotblahmcblah on Feb 28, 2008 08:07 PM

[79] The most ridiculous thing about that one is that I just remembered that not only did I solve Aaron's puzzle, I got it very quickly. I really feel like eating a gun. :(

  82. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 08:09 PM

[75] Yeah, but Mountain Lion and Cougar are clearly not hidden in that word :)

  83. FilePancakesjmcintyre on Feb 28, 2008 08:12 PM

Stuck only on the winter scene... even knowing there's a typo isn't clearing the mental logjam.

EDIT: That ol' posting magic worked again. Got it just after I hit the button.

  84. Img_0189Egggst on Feb 28, 2008 08:26 PM

    Beautiful!
And very well-executed, except did you realize one of the clues...

    kidding.

  85. FileDuckieescKey on Feb 28, 2008 08:33 PM

That was fun. A little work, but worth it.

  86. FileSailboatCalloravion on Feb 28, 2008 08:35 PM

[34] Did you get 'EMU' for that one like I did?

  87. FileRocketAveOscuro on Feb 28, 2008 09:58 PM

This was alot of fun, but now I can't stop looking for animal names hidden in words... Arnott = ant, blahmcblah = lamb, jmcintyre = mite

  88. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 28, 2008 10:15 PM

    [87] LOL, great!

  89. 2739833647_e854fb2bbeCarrotcbrady928 on Feb 28, 2008 10:55 PM

Stuck on the Who you gonna call clue...which means I might also be stuck on the 2 three letter clues that connect to it

  90. FileApplediandneo on Feb 28, 2008 10:59 PM

I think I have the orchestra wrong. Any salt?

  91. FileApplediandneo on Feb 28, 2008 11:03 PM

[89]I have the who ya gonna with the same last 3 letters as the host. Hope that helps.

  92. Avatar_profileKiwijygro on Feb 28, 2008 11:04 PM

When I loaded the puzzle, there was the misspelling, when I 'finished' the puzzle, there wasn't. It took forever to figure out that I had to reload the puzzle and enter all the answer again... Still an awesome puzzle. Very enjoyable!

  93. Neptune2Pumpkinking_neptune on Feb 28, 2008 11:18 PM

    [90] Think opposite of authentic.

Thanks for a great puzzle, Arnot! (Glad I was late and missed the miss-take).

  94. Avatar_profileWatermelonMegham on Feb 28, 2008 11:35 PM

so, if anyone is still up, i've got all but that wintery pic. Not sure what my starting word should be. Salt?

  95. FileSailboatyelowflower on Feb 29, 2008 02:27 AM

    [94] not exactly a gecko

  96. FileCarrotfnord23 on Feb 29, 2008 02:41 AM

There are two animals in the detective's name...one is proven wrong by the way the grid works out, but it can be misleading for a bit...

  97. Avatar_profileWatermelonMegham on Feb 29, 2008 03:17 AM

Ah, thanks [95]! That also fixes my twister going across, which i was really only guessing at.

  98. FileApplekirklimon on Feb 29, 2008 03:55 AM

    too tired. i give up.

  99. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Feb 29, 2008 05:28 AM

I ahd all the answers (I'm a freaking genius!)
but the full 10 letter adjective eluded me.
Thanks Arnott for setting me straight!

    Pb

  100. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 29, 2008 05:32 AM

[96] Hmm... I couldn't find one, Chris. You're not (mis)counting ROE as an animal, right? And you're only using the first name, right?

I thought I was pretty thorough, making sure there weren't two animals in any of these words... but, then again, I also managed to spell one of them with two frickin' Z's for, like, five different drafts :)
