When I was working on my Hidden Zoo hypercross back in February...
http://web.tanga.com/crossword_puzzles/680-2-28...
...I was delighted to find a few animals that contained other animal names and thought, "Huh. That could be its own Hypercross. Assuming I could find a few more."
And I did. So here it is :)

[9] Yeah, true :)
In fact, in the clue #1 example, I specifically used MUSTANG in order to get both STAG and GNAT out it, GNAT used as the tip-off that insects would be considered animals.
Others that weren't used (because they were bad animals to try and recognize): MONGOOSE (Moose, Goose) and HERON (Hen).

[9] Animal in the "animal, vegetable, mineral" sense.

I absolutely loved this puzzle. I just started with the two letter answer and worked my way out from there. Not too hard, but very fun.
