[14] I was trying that too, but it didn't fit w/ the crossing answers. Do you have the 3 crossing letters? If so, try a crossword solver; the one I tried came up with 5 possibilities, one of which was the (at that point obvious) answer.
#2 took me a while... had trouble figuring out the jar clue, and I hadn't considered the possibility of a partial word as an answer.
