Hey, Gang,
I was looking over some of renfurdson's old Hypercrosses, when I came across this one:
http://web.tanga.com/crossword_puzzles/46-7-14-...
Since the idea is more of a puzzle type than a theme, I thought I'd try to do my version of it. Something new for now, while we're figuring out how Hypers are gonna be scheduled.
Mine's a little harder (of course), but I'm pretty sure it's logically solvable without having to use trial-and-error.

Not bad. Took a little thought. I was mistaken on the theme for the first clue, but the theme I though of led me to the correct entry there- that helped when fixing the others.

Having trouble with the image for #6, not that I think it'd be much help anyways, since I'm already super lost but FYI..

Cool puzzle Arnott. Made you think a little bit

[6] Damn, was worried about that. Would you TG me them?
EDIT - Whew (for now). So far all the alternate "solutions" involve translating the pictures into words that are different from what I intended them to be.
I may change a few of them, because of that... but it's looking like my "solution" is, in fact, the only "correct" one.

[9] sure let me go back and redo them. I had at least three so far.

Difficult, but fun. Really tough when you come up with a combination that fits but it's the wrong answer.

Pretty interesting. I thought it would be frustrating, but was actually fun.

It took me working through #s 3, 4, 5, and 6 before I got my first solid answer. After that, they started falling into place.

[13] Yeah, I think #8 is actually the place to start. It was, in fact, gonna be the only place... but then I took it down a notch, difficulty-wise... something I do now, out of experience :)
So I think you can also start at the 6/11 intersection.

I got it, but only by trial and error. I don't "get it."

[15] I'm still not getting it either. I feel like I'm stuck in a Rene Magritte painting ;)

I think #8 is the best start point, since it forces one of the crossing letters (all pictures have the same letter in that position). This limits the choices for #7, and this causes about half the entries to solve quickly.
edit: of course, I started with #1, but 20/20 hindhsight works wonders (and not just one-word ones :-)
edit 2: [14] I think 6/11 is relatively easy, but still has several possibilities more than 8/7/9 does.

[14] now that I've solved, would you mind TG'ing me with an explanation of why the answer at #8 is the answer? I'm really anxious to solve this correctly.

[19] If you solved, it's right!

I'm a little confused--is there an internal logic as to which word is right, as opposed to using the crossing letters? (In the first one, there was an "odd one out" method, but I'm not seeing one here.)

Ah, okay. As I suspected, the "wrong" answers are coming from misreading the images :(
I need to change one to make it clearer, but I'll wait until 8pm so as not to mess anyone up right now.
Suffice to say, that's not FLAME in #12.

[20] I know it's right, but I'd like to know why... :)

[21] No, this was never intended to be a one-of-these-things-is-not-like-the-other puzzle. It's just an interlocking-word puzzle... but with pictures - so that there can be some misunderstandings!
But I can see how I might have misled you that way with #1, since those answers seem to have a "theme." I prolly shouldn't have done that.

It's also not "flame" in 11 ... just in case anyone (like me) thought it might be.

I don't think #1 is meteorite or comet, but I can't think of anything else that fits...
P.S. I got the image to work if I right-clicked, copied the URL and looked at it in another browser window, then refreshed the window, weird...

Crap, I thought I had the only pair that would work for 6/11, but it fell apart on me when I went to fill in other clues. I must have one of the pictures misidentified and there's another option, or I've got one of the answers in 3 wrong and there's one that would fit with my current arrangement.

Okay, Looks like I misidentified one of the clues in #2, and the replacement works. 84th.

I understood what was going on from the beginning and I got it pretty quickly even though I started from #1. Not too bad and it was pretty fun actually. For some reason I could NOT figure out what kind of crackers that was though lol!

[43] [44] The title pretty much says it all. Each clue has multiple images. Pick one.

[14] Without that bit of salt, I probably would have abandoned the puzzle in frustration. Starting at 6/11 allowed all the other clues to fall into place.
Thanks! It was fun.

It's funny seeing the comments about the optimal starting place. I actually got going with the 3-4 connection.
Arnott
Posted on Wed Jun 25, 2008 07:16 PM |
[47] Yeah, but you could still have GEISHA or ARMADA + LEAF. Granted, 3/4 rules some stuff out, but it doesn't give you a guaranteed start like a few other places do.
