The Puzzlethon is back.
This Saturday, January 17, starting at 7pm Pacific, instead of there being a single One Word Wonder for 24 hours, there were be 24 One Word Wonders – each new one will start on the hour. So one at 7, then a new one at 8, then 9, etc.
All Tangans who answer all 24 puzzles before Sunday at 7pm Pacific will be entered into a drawing, and one lucky solver will win a prize. I don’t know what the prize is yet, but it’ll probably be a game of some sort… and maybe some other stuff.
Hey, just think of the prize as a Tanga Mystery Package :)
It doesn’t matter when you answer all 24 puzzles during this time period, as long as you get them all before Sunday night. This, of course, means that you only have an hour to solve that last one… well, in order to be eligible for the drawing. You can, of course, answer any of the puzzles on your own schedule if you don’t care about being able to win the prize.
See you Saturday!

Yeah baby!
my first puzzlethon! :)
I teach all weekend :(!!!!
Will the puzzles be chosen from the ones we submitted or will it be an All-Arnott-Puzzle-Thon?
Will there be bonus points for the first 100 solves?
Very important questions [4]!!
Wow, burning off 24 OWWs in a single day! Well, maybe the queue was overloaded with OWWs. (I, personally, find OWWs to be the hardest puzzles to compose. It gets harder and harder to come up with an idea that hasn't already been used.)
I hope the Puzzlethon accomplishes whatever it is you're trying to accomplish. (I assume that encouraging people to drop everything else in their lives and go without sleep isn't your primary goal.)
[4] I've, er... "written" a few puzzles, but they will mostly be user submitted. Though I only went with one per person, so no user will have more than a single puzzle in the 'thon.
As for Tanga Points, this is kind of a weird one.
Because we don't have a special Puzzlethon page like from Tanga 2.0, I'm just going to schedule the 24 OWW on the hour. The first 100 solvers bonus will apply... but I think when the next puzzle comes into the queue, the previous one will become "used" as far as Tanga is concerned, so solving it will be worth only 3, and not 10 anymore. However, I'm not sure what this will do to the whole first 100 solvers bonus if there haven't been the full 100 solves. Likely, it will cut off, since that'd be the least desireable option :)
But... there was really no other way to get the Puzzlethon running with minimum fuss, and I really wanted to have one in January.
[3] Sorry. The weekend seemed the best time to potentially sucker, er... invite people to stay up all night.
[7] Cool. 4 a.m. Eastern Time is a perfect slot to publish one of mine! ;)
[8] I didn't say I wasn't going to stay up all night, it's just my teaching is going to really stink the next day! ;)
Ack! Bonus points? Well, that's wonderful, but for those who go to church (or work for the church) on Sunday mornings, that means we won't be able to be here to solve any puzzles all morning. Dang...I'm going to miss out on at least 6, possibly 7 of the puzzles just for that. And then, of course, there's sleeping......
[11] Sorry, ref. I'm sure there's no good 24 hour period for everyone. But if we do another, maybe we'll start on Wednesday. That way only the jobless will have an advantage :)
[12] Or, we could just skip the bonus points and run it the way the last puzzlethon was - pointswise anyway.
[13] Well, the last puzzlethon was back when Tanga had a different interface, and the puzzlethon itself had its own page and special programming.
We don't have that this time around. So I'm working with what we got.
FWIW, I kinda like that the crazy late/early puzzles will be giving bonus points to those who stay up/get up for them :)
Besides, what would you rather have: extra Tanga Points or a Mystery Package? You don't have to solve any puzzle in its first hour (except the final one) to be entered into the drawing.
If you are looking for feedback on the pointwise issue I think just let the current system apply. Why not?
Pointwise does it really matter if there are less than 100 solves before the next puzzle is out?
Well, I'm not looking for feedback, because there's really no changing it :)
The way the Puzzlethon used to work: it had its own special page, with a Puzzlethon link, and all 24 puzzles were essentially "up" for their whole run.
So Puzzle One ran for 24 hours, Puzzle Two ran for 23 hours, Three for 22 hours, etc. And then 24 hours later, they ALL went into the archives as "old" puzzles.
I would have TOTALLY done that again if we could have gotten it done in time. But we couldn't. So rather than not have a 'thon, I went with what was in place and worked around it the best way I could.
I would absolutely go back to the old method if we do another one of these. And have the time/willingness to write the code for it.
Arnott, I think this will be fun, and remember you can't please everyone. But, I'm totally looking forward to it :)
Years of online gaming has made me realize that life DOES go on if you aren't online at just the "right" time, you can still have fun. And that people really have no guess how much work goes into a website, especially one updated daily, with thousands of unique visitors a day.
Leaving the puzzles up til 7pm tomorrow allows everyone to play.
Tanga totally has me hooked, and I've only been here for a bit.
Hey, cool!
The top 100 bonus points for solves and the 10 "Featured" points for the puzzle do NOT go away when the next puzzle is Featured an hour later.
Hmmm... I wonder if it's a 7-to-7 thing, or an 24 hours-from-publication thing?
Either way: sweet!
Arnott - since you did so well on the "points thing" - could you also arrange for some coffee and snacks? :)
[19] Yes. They are waiting for you here in Los Angeles.
Thanks! I'll be right over. :O
[18] Okay, so it is a 24 hour thing. Interesting. That means all those puzzlethon puzzles are still available for full points.
[22] Ummm....Arnott??...You okay??...You are talking to yourself!! :)
[22] Arnott, did you hear something?
No, Arnott.

The Puzzlethon winner is...
cruncha!
I should be finding out what your prize is later today (with any luck), or maybe it'll just stay a mystery until it shows up :)
Thanks to all who participated, "you're welcome" to all for your kind words, and hmmm... there might still be one more thing. (I hope).
Grats Cruncha!
wow!! Thanks!
Okay, just found out: the prize is just a pack of Bazooka bubble gum. But it's the big 10-pack.
Kidding, of course.
It's actually a copy of RA, one Line Chaserz, one Tanga T-shirt (size large) and a remote apparatus for your iPod. Hopefully there's something in there that you'll like.
Congratulations to Cruncha!
[24] Arnott you made me seriously LOL! Thanks! :)
congrats cruncha!
