➀ Solving Cryptopix puzzles

Cryptopix puzzles are solved by putting pictures together to form a phrase (usually, a well known phrase). This is often straightforward, but here are a few remarks…

Phonetics are almost always more important than spelling. The word TO might be clued by the number 2.
Picture arithmetic is commonly used. The word TO might be clued by “TUTU / 2”; also, the word WHERE might be clued by “WEREWOLFWOLF”.
There are two different types of letter addition used: with or without a “+”. A letter on its own (without a “+”) represents the full sound of the spoken letter (e.g., T = “tee”), whereas letter(s) preceded by a “+” indicates that you should append those letter(s) to the previous word. Here are two examples comparing these methods…
      [Picture of a tree] T = “Treaty”
      [Picture of a tree] +T = “Treat”
Letter substitution is commonly used. The word BOARD might be clued by “SWORD, sw→b” (see the example linked to below).
Picture placement may clue puzzle words. A (bold) horizontal line separating pictures may clue words such as ‘under’, ‘above’, ‘on’, or ‘over’ (as in the example below). Other words such as ‘on’, ‘in’, ‘around’, etc., may be clued in a similar fashion.

Click Here for an example of a Cryptopix (and its solution) that uses picture arithmetic, letter substitution, and a picture placement convention.

➁ Solving OWW [One Word Wonder] puzzles (and what does it mean to tanga something?)

OWW’s can be very difficult. There is no one method for solving OWW puzzles; anything goes, as long as the answer is one word. With that being said, solving a OWW often requires you to tanga something. To tanga usually means to extract letters using a certain index or key. Two of the most common ways to tanga are given below.

To tanga might mean using the following number/letter association: 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, … 26=Z. Click Here for an example of a OWW puzzle that uses this number/letter association.
To tanga might mean using the number N to find the Nth letter of a line or word. Click Here for an example of a OWW puzzle that uses this “Nth letter” trick.

It is also common for OWW puzzles to have multiple steps (or “layers”). In particular, a repeat step known as “lather, rinse & repeat” is frequently used. Click Here for an example of a OWW puzzle that makes use of the “lather, rinse & repeat” method.

➂ Solving HC [Hypercross] puzzles

Really, HC puzzles are just crossword puzzles with pictures for clues (instead of words). Below are a couple remarks about HC puzzles; the second remark links to an example HC puzzle.

The (picture) clues for HC puzzles often use the conventions of Cryptopix puzzles (e.g. – picture & letter arithmetic).
Every HC puzzle has a title, which usually describes the puzzle’s theme. Sometimes a HC’s title might be of minimal importance, while other times solving a HC puzzle may be nearly impossible unless you understand the title and/or theme. To complicate matters, some HC titles have a straightforward connection to the puzzle, while others may disguise the title↔theme connection as a riddle or pun. Click Here for a sample HC puzzle that is themed around the word HEAD.

➃ Hints & help: comments, “salt”, and TGs [Tangagrams]

On Tanga, hints/help for a puzzle is referred to as salt. If you’re stumped with a puzzle and need salt, the best place to look is amidst the puzzle’s comments. If you’ve been stumped for a while, you might try asking for more salt or try sending someone (e.g. – the puzzle’s author) a TG asking for more help. Here are some guidelines to consider regarding salt & posting comments:

Be patient. If you get here right at 7:00 PM PST, don’t expect salty comments right away. The tanga community often waits to give “heavy” salt until after the puzzle has 100 solves (because of the way bonus points are awarded).
Be careful before you post salty comments or “incorrect” answers. If you post a comment that is too big of a hint, others may complain and/or flag (delete) your comment. Also, avoid posting “incorrect” answers because you may actually be revealing an intermediate answer or some other overly helpful information.
Do not send answers via TG. Sometimes TG’s are exchanged to give/get extra salt (particularly after the puzzle is a few hours old and no additional salt is being given in the puzzle’s comments). However, you are NOT allowed to exchange answers via TG.
Please don’t post, “I just guessed it” comments, and don’t post pepper. Especially for OWW’s, good salt hints at the solution method, not the final answer itself; I refer to hinting at the answer word as ‘pepper’ instead of salt. Posting peppery comments or posting “I just guessed the answer” encourages other solvers to bypass the intended solve method & skip straight to the end. This takes the fun out of solving the puzzle and is disrespectful to the puzzle’s author.

➄ Tanga points: how to earn them and what they’re good for

Here are the ways to earn Tanga points:

Solve Cryptopix & OWW puzzles. Solving featured Cryptopix or OWW puzzles within 24 hours of their release (daily at 7:00 pm PST) gives you 10 points; after that they’re worth only 3 points. Also, the first 100 solvers receive between 1 and 100 bonus points, depending on where they finished.
Solve HC puzzles. Solving featured HC puzzles within 48 hours of their release (every other day at 7:00 pm PST) gives you 20 points; after that they’re worth only 5 points. Also, the first 100 solvers receive between 1 and 100 bonus points, depending on where they finished.
Unfeatured puzzles There are usually some number of “unfeatured” puzzles on Saturday mornings at 7:00 am PST. There are no bonus points for these puzzles. Unfeatured OWW and Cryptopix puzzles are worth 3 points each and unfeatured HC puzzles are worth 5 points each.
Bottom Feeder & Random Questions (RQs). Clicking on the PLAY button near the top of Tanga’s webpage will reveal links to the Bottom Feeder contest and the current RQ (but you might have to scroll down to find them). Participating in either will earn you 1 point. Getting a submitted RQ published also earns one a small number of points.
Making purchases. Clicking on the SAVE button near the top of Tanga’s webpage will display Tanga’s current deals. Purchasing items on Tanga will earn you 30 points (although the first buyer of each product type is rewarded with 60 points instead).
Creating Puzzles. If you submit a puzzle and it gets published, you get points. If your puzzle is featured, you get 150 points for a Cryptopix, 250 points for a OWW, and 500 points for a HC. Each unfeatured puzzle published is worth 50 points.

Here is what you get for earning Tanga points:

Earning 5,000 points get you STU [Super Tanga User] status. STU status earns you extra discounts on Tanga merchandise, gives you 5 picks (instead of 3) in the Bottom Feeder contest, and allows you to flag comments.
Earning Tanga points is how to achieve the next level of “fruit”. Click Here for a list of how many points are required for the various levels of fruit. Note: earning fruit is simply for fun.
Top point-earners are listed on the Tanga leaderboards. Click Here to see the Tanga leaderboards. In addition to bragging rights, the top 10 point earners of each month are sometimes awarded some tanga cash.

➅ Submitting your own puzzles

Creating puzzles can be even more rewarding than solving them, but creating a feature-worthy puzzle is difficult. You shouldn’t be surprised if you get a “rejection” notice after submitting your first puzzle. Having your puzzle rejected isn’t necessarily bad news; “rejection” doesn’t always mean what you might think (the mods could just be asking for changes before they change the status to “approved”/“featured”).

Creating puzzles is a complex topic that deserves its own guide. Such a guide can be found here: Puzzle Makers Guidelines.

Note: I’ve heard that an updated version of the Puzzle Maker’s Guide is in the works…

With the consultation of several other tanganites via TG, I put together this Puzzler's Guide to complement the somewhat outdated Puzzler's FAQ by Leadfoot. Feel free to send me a TG (or leave a comment) if you think anything should be changed/reworded/omitted or if you have any suggestions for additions. Your feedback is very welcome (but I won't necessarily implement it!).

PS. IMO only one of the example puzzles I created is fun / worth solving. When linked to above, the puzzle's solution is next to it, so I'll paste the puzzle below in case anyone is interested in taking a crack at it w/o the answer visible (so, don't post the answer here!). Hint: The answer to this OWW is not a 5-letter word.

    THIS or THAT
    ____ or death
    ____ or break
    ____ or miss
    ____ or take
    ____ or miss

  2. Tanga_shadow_goat_2-fpAceshiella on Oct 12, 2011 04:23 AM

that was a good one! that last one might have thrown me had it not been obvious by the end ie going into next word

BTW Thanks for taking time to do all this! I'm sure it will be helpful to many!!

  3. Tanga_shadow_goat_2-fpAceshiella on Oct 12, 2011 04:26 AM

after thought: is this going to put in FAQ because it won't take too long for this to hit 2nd page in comments, or newbies may not come here looking for help?

  4. Untitled-1PumpkinAdamMcD on Oct 12, 2011 09:29 AM

[3] I would be fine with tanga adding this "(unofficial) Puzzler's Guide" to their FAQ page. Whether that happens to not is up to the Tanga staff.

In the meantime, one could incessantly 'bump' this thread to keep it on page 1. I'll leave that to you shiella. :-Þ

  5. FileGarlicsykottik on Oct 12, 2011 09:52 AM

[4] Excellent call! Unless you prominently display the word "potato" in your FAQ.
    .
    .
BTW Thanx for all the work you put into it.

  6. 07310099PancakesLakeLivin on Oct 13, 2011 09:01 AM

Here's a call to the Tanga admins:

Give this a week or two to allow for possible feedback/ additions/ modifications and then copy the original post to the FAQ section. Might want to change the title to something a bit more specific like "A Guide to Tanga Puzzles".

    Nice job Adam.

  7. 07310099PancakesLakeLivin on Oct 13, 2011 10:00 AM

Don't know how appropriate it would be to add here but I was very impressed by Sailboatquantamm's reply to a question about the merits of Tanga Points a while back:

"Tanga points are a relative measure of your worthiness as a human being. I, for example, have 9316 points, meaning that I am a decent human being. You, however, have only 148 points, putting you somewhere being a serial killer and the-married-guy-who-leaves-the-toilet-seat-up."

  8. Tanga_shadow_goat_2-fpAceshiella on Oct 13, 2011 10:58 AM

    [7] that explains it!
I was actually just trying to explain to a newer player , why we gave a hoot about pts other than getting another cute little picture..
Sykottik, how would you explain it?

  9. FileDuckiePatanga on Oct 13, 2011 02:37 PM

    Yes.....pleeeeze explain, Sy.

  10. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Oct 13, 2011 05:06 PM

    Hey, Gang,

Adam asked me about this a while ago, and I not only HAPPILY gave him the go-ahead, but we have every intention of steali... er... asking him nicely about turning this into a permanent page.

  11. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Oct 13, 2011 07:20 PM

And I've already sent a link to it to a newby asking for OWW solving help. :)

  12. FileGarlicMrPlow99 on Oct 13, 2011 07:35 PM

    Great write-up!

If I have to pick a nit, it's that I think you should move the 1 to the other side of the equation so that you have
    (e ^ (i*pi) ) + 1 = 0

    But that's just a personal preference. (-:

  13. FileCarrotengles on Oct 13, 2011 07:53 PM

Awesome. There should be a link on the home page or main puzzle page to this.

    i to pi: Be rational.
    pi to i: Get real

  14. FileEggplanthankescu on Oct 14, 2011 06:22 AM

No fair. Everything I know about Tanga I had to learn on the streets.

  15. FileDuckiePatanga on Oct 14, 2011 07:55 AM

    [14] true dat....

  16. FileGarlicMrPlow99 on Oct 14, 2011 01:08 PM

[13] I bought the "Keep it real" shirt off Tanga - I think it's hilarious.

  17. Tanga_shadow_goat_2-fpAceshiella on Oct 14, 2011 07:58 PM

jus moving this back to top of page, it's my assignment

  18. FilePotatoGinnyjulie on Oct 21, 2011 09:48 PM

I thought the guide was wonderful. It should be required reading for new people. I wish I had seen it a month ago when I first started. I would love to see it in a printable format.

  19. FileGarlicsykottik on Oct 22, 2011 07:43 AM

[18] You would have seen it sooner if SOMEONE was doing her job!

  20. 07310099PancakesLakeLivin on Oct 22, 2011 07:53 AM

[18] ??? If you're using windows and you highlight the guide (left click and hold while you scroll over it), click on 'print', and choose 'selection' you get a well formatted, three page version you can print. Or do you mean something else by 'printable format'?

  21. Tanga_shadow_goat_2-fpAceshiella on Oct 22, 2011 09:59 AM

[19] If you mean me ,old man, it wasn't out a month ago!!
and I've been keeping an eye on it! I decided to wait until it was next to last on the page to move it up again.
Give me a pay raise and I'll move it up every time it is in slot 5-7!

  22. FileGarlicsykottik on Oct 30, 2011 07:17 PM

[21] Your remuneration should be the joy you receive from being slightly useful.

  23. Tanga_shadow_goat_2-fpAceshiella on Oct 27, 2011 12:38 AM

[22] just wanted to feel the joy which is like running thru the the water sprinkler late afternoon on a scorcher day

  24. FileGarlicsykottik on Oct 27, 2011 02:52 AM

[23] God, I envy your jet-setter, exciting, life of privilege.

  25. Tanga_shadow_goat_2-fpAceshiella on Oct 27, 2011 03:05 PM

oh, I'm sorry . I sometimes forget that my comments may cause hurt feelings or resentment among the less fortunate. Truly, this is never my intention.
So in the spirit of ? [somebody put the correct word here, friendship, guilt, compassion, nanananabooboo]
I am giving you the newest, high tech sprinkler in the market; it has 40 spray patterns, 3 speeds, remote control, oh and as an added bonus after thought, you will also get the newest antibacterial,anti-kink, hose that comes in designer colors. Because of your personality, I chose bright multi stripe for you.
No thanks necessary, please just enjoy, enjoy! Your joy is all the thanks I need!
Oh my gosh, do you have a spigot?
Or perhaps, you live in a high rise apartment building?
Don't worry, I'll figure something out. Do people rent their yards? I'm sure most lawns are not available.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________

I looked up the word spigot to make sure that it meant the entire faucet and not just the handle you turn; it can be either so while I was on the page [ yes,I prefer a good old-fashioned,thick, hard back, hand held dictionary] , I decided to look up my childhood understanding of spigot

aside note for fellow southerners: if you grew up hearing the word ,spicket, it is incorrect:

"these are substitutions like "spicket" for "spigot." for most linguists, if you think that word is "spicket," intend to say it that way, and execute it properly, you haven't made an error.
or have you? clearly, for grammarians, using the word "spicket" where better-educated speakers would use "spigot" is an error."

however even people who know the word is in fact, spigot, they pronounce it spickethttp://www.jstor.org/pss/487109

In the book "Common Errors in English Useage" a faucet is a spigot not spicket
I could not find spicket in several dictionaries however It was in MANY ads, and entries.
So does wide spread usage of a non word make it acceptable unofficially? Is it always wrong because it is technically not a word?

Sy & Sh: As this is a fairly helpful Info Thread, would you mind not doing this here? It just feels wrong to me.

  27. Tanga_shadow_goat_2-fpAceshiella on Oct 27, 2011 03:03 PM

[26] I apologize > I will delete what I think is the offensive stuff Fair enough?

BTW, Sy made me do it

  28. Tanga_shadow_goat_2-fpAceshiella on Oct 27, 2011 03:15 PM

[19] 21 thru 23 are referring to me keeping an eye on this thread and moving it up occasionally so that it stays on front page
do you think I should delete those too? I wasn't sure if you meant just the more offensive line that was in 25 or all of the running jokish comments??
23 is about the joyful feeling of being slightly useful by moving the thread up and the spigot thing well I just wanted to share a common language mistake.
Arnott please send me TG if you would like me to remove more-- no problem

  29. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Oct 27, 2011 10:20 PM

I actually considered just deleting stuff before I wrote [26]. But that seemed like an over-reaction on my part, so I figured I'd just try asking nicely first :) And since that seems to have worked, I don't feel the need to delete anything.

Nothing you guys wrote was offensive to me. I just felt that this thread was the wrong place for what seems to have become your traditional back-and-forth, that's all.

Thanks to both of you for understanding.

  31. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Nov 09, 2011 10:16 AM

    Hey, Gang...

So here's the story. I'm dealing with this, and with a companion version that Sonjahi was nice enough to write... *and* some extra stuff of my own that I want to add...

But to make this a permanent page, I'm kinda doing it all myself. Which means I'm also learning code :) Which is cool, in a way, because part of me *wants* to learn it, but it's tricky and frustrating. And because I'd like to include a lot of image examples, it's extra weird (positioning images, storing them someplace else other than Tanga (don't ask)). I'm sure, for some of you, this is basic stuff, but it's a learning... let's call it an "adventure" for me :)

And then there's November. I'm gone next week on a trip. Then I'm gone the week after for Thanksgiving. And I also have some other Tanga stuff I wanna do (you will likely see one of my stuffs later today).

So I have not forgotten this. But it's kind of a huge project for me, so be patient, as I'm dealing with it in little chunks, so as to not go crazy :)
