Do you suppose that the grammatical error and incorrect hyphenation are part of the puzzle?
Is there a problem with the puzzle? I have an answer, which I pretty sure is right, but it won't take it.
[1] They're more like hints.
Also, with #1, it's what's inside that counts.
[3] Thanks! I had the wrong #1 until I read your hint.
#1 was tough for me but finally got it.
[3] Thank you!!! Couldn't figure out why mine didn't work!
Without the salt from [3] I was all washed up.
[7] Yeah, me too. Got rid of #1 and ran 2-4 through a crossword solver and came up with the correct answer.
Sigh. Another puzzle without hints, and I'm spinning my gears fruitlessly.
so why is 1 not "jaw"?
Finally got it after a lot of flailing. [7] misled me (unintentionally, I think) by making me think I was on the right track with a wrong word. Finally, I flailed against #1 until I managed to make things work out, figuring it must be the problem.
(I've also never heard of the "popular brain teaser" mentioned in the solution. I don't know if it's maybe regional, or I just missed out on it. But it left me flailing a lot more than I would have otherwise. Which isn't to say that it's a bad puzzle, just that the clue failed to engage properly.)
