There's another answer to "special" that completely slowed me down.
Got it, but used help. The second answer could be one of two things, both creating viable answers. :(
I guess they gave us two points for this easy one tonight to make up for the hard puzzle from last night. Smart move-- keep the people happy.
I get exactly one word from the ones that I am SURE are right, and it's not taking it. So, screw it.
I get the puzzle, but I'm coming up blank on all but two of the clues. I'll go try the hard one and come back to this later.
My first thought was the blank was a word that sounded like a letter. But that led to a word that is not correct.

Well, I figured it out with only three clues. Now over to the hard.
Why did that take me so long??
Ahhh I was focused on the wrong word in the first sentence so I wasn't seeing how my word was going to be an answer ....and I also had the wrong answer for "special"
The last row (Special _) does not work exactly the same way as the rest of the clues.
[8] is what gave me the needed salt.
I got all but the second one then a simple crossword solver and I was done.

It works in the sense that the answer spells out a letter, or in the case of Special is a letter. . . though I think that instead of Special ___ the clue Mary ___ might have worked better. It would follow the pattern of the rest of them.
