    Enjoy.

  2. MeGrapesgahndalph on Aug 10, 2007 07:14 PM

I don't see it. At least not yet- not a chess afficiando.

  3. FilePotatoDrParty06 on Aug 10, 2007 07:04 PM

hmm this is sure to be tricky, as i know the way the creator thinks.

  4. Avatar_profilePlumVRoscioli on Aug 10, 2007 07:19 PM

This one is actually somewhat difficult IMO.

  5. FilePepperVerve640 on Aug 10, 2007 07:13 PM

    Nice one...

It took you 11 minutes and 20 seconds to solve this puzzle.
You were the 1st Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

  6. Chain_bunnyEggIrrenarzt on Aug 10, 2007 07:20 PM

Not seeing it at all. Brain just cut out.

  7. Avatar_profilePearhld1970 on Aug 10, 2007 07:21 PM

Ok, Verve. Any sodium is better than none. I play chess recreationally, know who Fischer is, but I have ....nothing.

  8. FileSailboatchubbchsr on Aug 10, 2007 07:22 PM

Yeah, same here, not seeing the route to follow at all.

I asked my local bishop. He's a pretty square guy, but I can always count on him.

    thanks [10]!!
that actually helps quite a bit

  13. ApparatusGrapesApparatus on Aug 10, 2007 07:29 PM

Anyone want to salt it for us non-chess players?

  14. FileGarlicHope2002 on Aug 10, 2007 07:30 PM

I haven't played chess in years. How much chess knowledge is required for this?

  15. FilePumpkinJohn on Aug 10, 2007 07:39 PM

I haven't solved it, so I don't know if any of this is useful:

Pieces are identified by a single letter: P for Pawn, N for Knight, R for Rook, B for Bishop, Q for Queen, and K for King

Pictured are a black pawn, white rook (castle) and white bishop. No horsies.

Michael Jackson sings a song called Bad, and another one called Black or White.

Chess is a recreational and competitive game for two players played on a square checkered chessboard. White makes the first move.

Chess is also "a musical with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, formerly of ABBA. The story involves a romantic triangle between two players in a world chess championship, and a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other."

"Searching for Bobby Fischer" is an acclaimed 1993 film based on the life of prodigy chess player Joshua Waitzkin

  16. FileSailboatchubbchsr on Aug 10, 2007 07:38 PM

    Bangkok baby, yeah!

    Still lost.

  17. Avatar_profilePearhld1970 on Aug 10, 2007 07:44 PM

[15] Thanks for all the info. At least you are trying to salt while those that have solved have not offered much of anything. Sniff.

  18. FilePumpkinJohn on Aug 10, 2007 07:50 PM

I wish I had solved it, sorry... that's all probably irrelevant.

Bishop 341-B is a fictional character from the Alien series of films, an android created by the Weyland-Yutani corporation. He, his creator and a character known as Bishop II are portrayed by actor Lance Henriksen.

A rook is the name for a piercing on the anti-helix of the ear. The rook piercing tends to be much more painful due to the large amounts of cartilage tissue which the needle passes through.

Knowing what is a fair exchange of pieces is crucial. The following table is a must for all chess players. It shows the value of all pieces relative to the Pawn and is useful for judging the value of a trade of pieces.

    9 : Queen
    5 : Rook
    3 : Bishop
    3 : Knight
    1 : Pawn

  19. FileRocketBearcat89 on Aug 10, 2007 07:46 PM

    I love to play chess
    Bobby Fischer is nutty
    Iceland can have him

  20. Avatar_profilePearhld1970 on Aug 10, 2007 07:46 PM

[18] It's ok. You are like the Tanga version of Norm.

  21. FilePotatoDrParty06 on Aug 10, 2007 07:47 PM

hmm i'm halfway to somewhere that is too perfect to be coincidental.

  22. FileSailboatchubbchsr on Aug 10, 2007 07:49 PM

I'm more than halfway to a point of saying "to hell with it" and giving up since I've been trying for nearly an hour now to no avail.

  23. FilePumpkinJohn on Aug 10, 2007 07:52 PM

    http://chess.about.com/od/beginners/ss/ble23pvl_3.htm

A Rook and a Pawn are approximately equal to any two minor pieces. A player who loses a Rook for a minor piece needs to win two Pawns to compensate for the 'loss of the exchange'

    # It took you 29 minutes and 38 seconds to solve this puzzle.
    # You were the 2nd Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

    [10] is good salt.

  25. FileEggmnemonica on Aug 10, 2007 07:58 PM

    Got it.
    # It took you 33 minutes and 27 seconds to solve this puzzle.
    # You were the 3rd Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

    First step: Count.

[27] Well, it's been an hour and only three people have solved, so salt seemed called for. But I've edited.

  26. FileApplegilby123 on Aug 10, 2007 07:56 PM

[24] Wish I knew why...I used to play chess when younger and I have no idea why that's helpful.

  27. Avatar_profilePlumVRoscioli on Aug 10, 2007 08:00 PM

[25] True, but combining your salt with [10] pretty much solves it ;)

  28. FilePumpkinJohn on Aug 10, 2007 07:59 PM

[27] After an hour, I'd say the push was warranted. It's still not coming to me, even after a hint that counts for a lot.

  29. FileGarlicHope2002 on Aug 10, 2007 08:02 PM

I got it but one of the letters didn't seem to work. Even with a trade. 7th after all this time means that there is something wrong. There is a salty word in several of the posts above that led me to it. I don't know how long it would have taken me to try that without the salt.

  30. FileKiwiZot on Aug 10, 2007 08:02 PM

[29] I can't figure out why the one letter doesn't seem to work either. I'm thinking it has something to do with 'Bad'

  31. FilePumpkinJohn on Aug 10, 2007 08:11 PM

I've got it now as well: 10th

A Bishop can move any number of squares diagonally if its path is not blocked

    Will you still need me?

  32. FileSailboatDAbrames on Aug 10, 2007 08:06 PM

Not so much a hard puzzle, as a difficult guess on where to begin.

    8th.

  33. Avatar_profilePlumVRoscioli on Aug 10, 2007 08:10 PM

D'oh! I need to proofread better. Puzzle has been fixed. Thanks to [29] for pointing it out. Sorry all.

  34. Chain_bunnyEggIrrenarzt on Aug 10, 2007 08:11 PM

[33] Didn't notice anything wrong myself. Must have proofread as I went.

That being said, I'm still clueless...

  35. FileGarlicHope2002 on Aug 10, 2007 08:12 PM

    [33] Ohhhhh! There it is!

  36. FileApplegilby123 on Aug 10, 2007 08:18 PM

Ugh...my limited knowledge of the game worked against me...Kept searching the wrong places...

  37. FilePotatoDrParty06 on Aug 10, 2007 08:30 PM

i know the game, the person, and where the answer should be, but i still don't have it.

edit:# It took you 1 hour, 26 minutes and 11 seconds to solve this puzzle.
    # You were the 15th Tanga member to solve this puzzle. it's been staring me in the face for the past half hour and i didn't see part of it while i was focusing on something else.

  38. FilePumpkinJohn on Aug 10, 2007 08:27 PM

Don't make me get cross with you, DrParty06.

  39. Avatar_profileAppleAMeisler on Aug 10, 2007 08:28 PM

Try not to overthink this. Most of the information above is completely irrevelant. In fact, Mr. Fischer could be a Checkers Champion and the puzzle could still be solved the same way.

  40. Avatar_profilePlumFermiDisciple on Aug 10, 2007 08:38 PM

    # It took you 1 hour, 14 minutes and 34 seconds to solve this puzzle.

Oh, wow, just got it after rereading [10]! VRoscioli gives a very concise, comprehensive grain of salt.

Sonuva... I saw that over an hour ago but the bad letter thing didn't click...

  47. ApparatusGrapesApparatus on Aug 10, 2007 08:50 PM

I'm just going to vote "no" and hope someone buys up all of this puzzle so we can get the next one... oh, wait. This isn't Tangathon.

  48. Avatar_profilePearhld1970 on Aug 10, 2007 08:53 PM

[47] LOL That was a good one.

  49. FileRadishBetaPrime on Aug 10, 2007 09:03 PM

    wow... wonderfully constructed puzzle.

Maybe this will help some people, as I stumped a long time on this. It is not where the bishop starts, it is a move it can make.

  50. SouthparkPepperTahnan on Aug 10, 2007 09:00 PM

So that...wasn't bad. But it was awfully wide-open; there were many, many things you could do in addition to the right thing. (cf "smoke and mirrors")

[49] Most browsers should force a reload of the page content if you shift+refresh

  52. Avatar_profileLemonphaedrus72 on Aug 10, 2007 09:24 PM

Took me way too long. Very elegant.
I like the hard ones that stump you and make you want to give up, but when you get it you hear a resounding "Duh" in your head, because it was your fault that it took you so long. Not like those other hard ones that you hate just the same after you finally solve them.

  53. Avatar_profileWatermelonnervousone on Aug 10, 2007 09:26 PM

[50] Not sure if I like it that way, it doesn't need to be obvious, but then it shouldn't be a complete leap of faith trying every thing to get it right.

  54. Almost-sold-out-product2OnionDrewO on Aug 11, 2007 06:31 AM

    # It took you 10 minutes and 44 seconds to solve this puzzle.
    # You were the 30th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

Excellent puzzle. Two and a half hours into the puzzle and I'm 30th.

To add a grain of salt - It reminds me of the joke a about the math teacher with constipation. He worked it out with a pencil.

  55. Avatar_profileRadishRastus on Aug 10, 2007 09:45 PM

Well I got the answer from the excel comment, but I looked at it for a few more minuted and still don't know how to solve.

  56. FilePlumSpanky on Aug 10, 2007 10:06 PM

{54} I tryed that too, but having trouble where to start..

  57. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Aug 10, 2007 10:14 PM

A bishop a rook and a pawn walked into a bar....

(not salt, but it could be the start of a beautiful joke...)

  58. Almost-sold-out-product2OnionDrewO on Aug 10, 2007 10:29 PM

    [56] LOL
I'm pretty sure I know what you meant but in the context of the joke your statement could be taken the wrong way.

  59. FilePeachyoda31419 on Aug 10, 2007 10:36 PM

    This is just bloody frustrating.

    I'm in the Dead Sea.
    Like swimming in my bathtub.
    No solution here.

  60. FilePlumSpanky on Aug 10, 2007 10:32 PM

    LOL yes.........[54]

  61. FileGrapesearthangel127 on Aug 10, 2007 10:40 PM

did anyone know that tanga is another word for thong? I just learned this off wikipedia.

  62. FileStrawberryPenh on Aug 10, 2007 10:59 PM

Boy, I come home from a hard day's dalmatianing and the Tanga puzzle has the discourtesy to stomp on my brain. What a world! At least the easy one didn't take me an hour this time.

  63. FilePumpkinJohn on Aug 11, 2007 01:05 AM

[61] Why do you think they call them tangathongs? :)

  64. FileStrawberryPenh on Aug 11, 2007 01:12 AM

Agh... I think my brain is crying...

  65. FileStrawberryPenh on Aug 11, 2007 01:27 AM

    # It took you 4 hours, 10 minutes and 51 seconds to solve this puzzle.
    # You were the 54th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

Sweet Zombie Jesus, was I way way off-base. This was definitely another case of trying to make things far too complicated. At least now I can get to bed in peace!

  66. FileAppleDodger on Aug 11, 2007 07:12 AM

Don't play chess, don't really like chess, and I especially don't like puzzles that need specialized knowledge to solve.

  67. FilePumpkinjeffg on Aug 11, 2007 10:06 AM

[66] I bet you know all the specialized knowledge of chess this puzzle requires. There are some pretty mild hints (look at the white bishop carefully) that might make the second step easier, but that step is pretty obvious once you get the first one.

  68. FileAppleDodger on Aug 11, 2007 11:17 AM

I see a white Bishop, white Rook, and Black Pawn. I've numbered the board, looked at the squares and still have nothing!

  69. FilePumpkinJohn on Aug 11, 2007 11:19 AM

    What have you counted?

  70. FilePlumlseelba on Aug 11, 2007 12:54 PM

I didn't have excel, but thankfully I was listening to some avant-garde Beatles while I was looking at the puzzles.

    Yum...salty Beatles!

  81. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Aug 11, 2007 07:25 PM

I've posted a hard puzzle at
    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/1658640#1658640

Sorry, I can't offer points - but it's a challenging one (for most Americans I think)

  82. FileDuckiedavey3 on Aug 11, 2007 08:57 PM

    No new puzzles tonight?

    And I missed yesterday, too.

Oh well, time for bed I guess.

  83. FilePancakestempus42 on Aug 12, 2007 03:50 PM

Ok, I got it thanks entirely to the salt here, but how in the world was anyone supposed to know what to do from the puzzle itself taken alone? What did I miss? A chess theme alone is not enough, in my opinion...

  84. FractalTomatodduensing on Jun 05, 2010 08:30 PM

I hated this puzzle.....the only way I could solve it at all was NOT the hints here at tanga, but the heavy salt late in the BGG discussion.

There are exactly 64 letters in the puzzle text, now place them on the chess board and look at them. (Using Microsoft's excel is an excellent way to do this.)

    The BGG link is:
    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/131250/master-tanga-puzzle-thread/page/379

There was subtle hints at the number 64 here at tanga, and the left sides of the game pieces in the puzzle show a reflection of a chess board, however, the picture is so grainy that it was hard to make out.

IMHO, not enough hints to solve this puzzle.
