    I could easily be wrong, since I don't really play chess, but isn't there a mate in 2? (Sorry I don't know the official notation to use:)

    Black Rook A8->A1
    White King D1->D2
    Black Queen C5->D5

    ?

    [1] Not quite, because the bishop can block the king after that.

    See, that's why I don't play chess... ;)

    So then I think I see the 3rd move after that, but any hints on how to convert that sequence of moves to a word?

    There are actually two routes I see to mate in 3, so I hope the exact moves aren't needed.

    nevermind. I found flaws in both attacks I had. I guess I'll just try to solve the buzzle instead ;-)

    Are the moves listed in [1] the correct first steps? I have a basic understanding of how pieces move, but my strategies are seriously lacking for the proper first move at least. I see many vulnerabilities with each that I take and none result in checkmate in three moves.

    Is it a tricky statement? Will White win?

    I think my mate in three is correct, but I still don't have the answer.

    EDIT: removed part of original post to let people find their own mate

    [8] I won't say if you are correct or not, since I have now solved the OWW and know that saying so would be salt. I have TGed you about your moves, however.
    I will say that the solution to the chess problem is necessary to solve the OWW.

    Finally got it, but that was exceptionally hard for non-chess players.

    I made the mistake of thinking 3 moves = 3 letters. Wrong!

    [4] If you've written out the entire sequence (like you did in [1]) that creates the checkmate for black in 3 moves, take a look at what you've written down and see if you notice something you can use to make a word from it.

    [12] I have the sequence written down and still dont see anything that can make a word

    [13] Look at where the pieces end up.

    Not good for non players.
