Wow, looks like this puzzle is really easy but zero fun.

  9. FilePumpkinJohn on Sep 28, 2007 07:33 PM

You say paakistan and I say packistan

  10. FileRocketfeydjm on Sep 28, 2007 07:33 PM

Gee is the "easy" the hard one again?

  11. FileRaspberrydsmeyer on Sep 28, 2007 07:38 PM

[7] conanfan how about some salt.

I think it should be plato or fruitfly, but nada.

  12. FilePumpkinJohn on Sep 28, 2007 07:50 PM

    Still lost, here.

The tomato is now grown worldwide for its edible fruits, with thousands of cultivars having been selected with varying fruit types, and for optimum growth in differing growing conditions. Cultivated tomatoes vary in size from cherry tomatoes, about the same 1–2 cm size as the wild tomato, up to beefsteak tomatoes 10 cm or more in diameter

  13. FileRocketfeydjm on Sep 28, 2007 07:51 PM

    2 completions after 45 minutes?

  14. Avatar_profileEggplantphurballdj on Sep 28, 2007 07:57 PM

Actually, that was clever....I was kinda stuck at first, but then, bang! It came to me! Before that, it kept flying over my head -- whoosh!

    (Woohoo! #2!)

  15. FilePumpkinJohn on Sep 28, 2007 07:53 PM

Tomatoes were at one time called "love apples" because of a superstition that people eating them would fall in love.

  16. FileGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Sep 28, 2007 07:55 PM

John either likes Wikipedia or REALLY knows a lot about tomatoes!

  17. FilePumpkinJohn on Sep 28, 2007 07:58 PM

I've read both sides of the argument now:

    http://www.tomatoland.com/
    http://www.tomatoesareevil.com/

Nightshades, such as Tomatoes contain trace elements of nicotine which can re-trigger cigarette addiction.

  18. FileGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Sep 28, 2007 07:57 PM

    I admire your devotion!

  19. Avatar_profileEggplantphurballdj on Sep 28, 2007 07:58 PM

    (Pssst. [14] = salt.)

  20. FilePumpkinJohn on Sep 28, 2007 07:59 PM

Thanks phurball... it's just not happening. I'm going to go drown my misery in some salsa

  21. FileGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Sep 28, 2007 08:01 PM
  22. Avatar_profileCarrotalchemist on Sep 28, 2007 08:01 PM

I thought pia REYES from rotten tomatoes....not that either. :/

  23. FileEggmnemonica on Sep 28, 2007 08:02 PM

    Third.

[14] really *is* salt. But I'm still not sure how the puzzle should be parsed. And I needed help spelling the answer!

  24. Avatar_profileEggplantphurballdj on Sep 28, 2007 08:03 PM

[23] Glad I could help out. :) Yeah, it's not a common (or easy!) word to spell.

  25. FileEggmnemonica on Sep 28, 2007 08:06 PM

[24] Well, your comment really helped things click! When I realized the answer, my heart went pitapat!

  26. Avatar_profileEggplantphurballdj on Sep 28, 2007 08:07 PM

[25] Better check that heart for a murmur....

  27. FileEggmnemonica on Sep 28, 2007 08:09 PM

Really, before you helped out, all I wanted to do was throw that tomato against a wall -- thunk! -- and listen to the juice go drip, drip, drip.

OK, I'm going to stop now.

  28. FileGarlicHope2002 on Sep 28, 2007 08:09 PM

4th after the help from [25]

I actually use this word a lot at work. Not sure how it goes together in the puzzle....

slap-----hit my head after that one.

  29. FileGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Sep 28, 2007 08:10 PM

smack! ....now I get the salt...with some help from my girlfriend....darn me for being a math minded person...

  30. Avatar_profileEggplantphurballdj on Sep 28, 2007 08:11 PM

Yes, I suppose we should bring the salt truck to a screeching halt.

  31. FileEggmnemonica on Sep 28, 2007 08:12 PM

    *snicker*

  32. Avatar_profilePancakesrandomcyn on Sep 28, 2007 08:14 PM

... I can't believe I actually spelled that right on the first try.

  33. FilePumpkinJohn on Sep 28, 2007 08:14 PM

Sorry, 'sphygmomanometer' is not correct. Please try again.

  34. FileRocketfeydjm on Sep 28, 2007 08:23 PM

Still only 12 completions. I think we can rev up the salt truck again...

  35. FileGarlicHope2002 on Sep 28, 2007 08:25 PM

    Vroom Vroom

  36. FilePumpkinJohn on Sep 28, 2007 08:28 PM

    Let's recap what we know...

    1) It's hard to spell (fairly useless without knowing the word)
    2) The puzzle clues its answer very poorly (obviously after 1.5 hours)

"Maybe a bowl of fresh fruit off to the side?" (sorry, that's not helpful - I'm just annoyed now)

  37. Avatar_profileCarrotalchemist on Sep 28, 2007 08:28 PM

It took you 28 minutes and 15 seconds to solve this puzzle.
You were the 13th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

wow, only 13 after 90 minutes

  38. FileDuckienrkii on Sep 28, 2007 08:30 PM

so I'm getting the clues, but I can't figure out how to connect them to this puzzle...

  39. Avatar_profileKiwiyendi on Sep 28, 2007 08:31 PM

Actually, I think the clue would be fine for a regular puzzle (and I'm pretty sure the puzzle creators don't designate a puzzle hard or easy). Once I treated it as a puzzle that really should take some time to get, I enjoyed it.

That said, I never, ever spell this one correctly.

  40. FileGarlicHope2002 on Sep 28, 2007 08:31 PM

    3) Salt in [14], [19], [24], [27], [28], [29], [31], [35]

  41. FileDuckienrkii on Sep 28, 2007 08:33 PM

[39] finally got it for me... by the 4th time I saw how hard it was to spell, I realized that I was actually thinking of the word for the last 30 minutes without realizing THAT WAS the answer!

  42. FilePumpkinJohn on Sep 28, 2007 08:40 PM

BGG salt did it for me.

Backsolving: But, apparently my rambling in [9] was on the right track.

Also, talk like Yoda, you must.

  43. FileEggmnemonica on Sep 28, 2007 08:37 PM

    [40] I'm pretty sure there's salt in [30] and [34], too.

  44. FileGarlick1w1 on Sep 28, 2007 08:41 PM

Wow, I never expected that to be the answer to a puzzle.
The penny finally dropped - it went "thunk".

  45. PixelBananaaynjul on Sep 28, 2007 08:49 PM

you would think after all the salt I would get it...

  46. FileCarrotpitamuffin on Sep 28, 2007 09:00 PM

[45] Did you check the Tanga puzzle link on BGG? The salt there did it for me.

  47. FileAceDavidL on Sep 28, 2007 09:02 PM

I'm disappointed. I was sure the answer would have something to do with Shaun White (aka The Flying Tomato)

  48. PixelBananaaynjul on Sep 28, 2007 09:24 PM

46, I have been. It's just not clicking.

  49. Avatar_profileKiwiSilverSabre25 on Sep 28, 2007 09:27 PM

Whee, go high school English class...

That was not a very well done puzzle, I don't think.

I'm putting some more direct salt at BGG...what's there isn't even what helped us (much).

  50. TappyApplekweee on Sep 28, 2007 09:30 PM

I'm so sorry for the stress this is causing everyone! I'll confess that the only person I showed it to prior to submitting was an English graduate student and she guessed it in ten seconds.

  51. FilePotatoDandelion_Wine on Sep 28, 2007 09:31 PM

solved it with salt - not with actual puzzle. Hopefully it'll click later

  52. PixelBananaaynjul on Sep 28, 2007 09:35 PM

49 finally made me think of it. I was asking everyone in the house what that term was... then I had to spell it! Grrrrr

  53. FileApplephosrik on Sep 28, 2007 09:42 PM

This just be one of those words I've never heard of. Even with the salt, I haven't got a clue.

  54. Avatar_profileKiwibunnymama on Sep 28, 2007 10:06 PM

Say what you see, but talk like Yoda when you do it.

  55. SouthparkPepperTahnan on Sep 28, 2007 10:27 PM

    Feh.

  56. Head_shotBananajppe5 on Sep 29, 2007 04:31 AM

OK, I got the answer from the hint on BGG, but I don't see how the puzzle really works.

I see the name of the airline (or abbreviation) is used, but the rest is the garbled. Even if I had put the right words in the right order, I don't think I would have heard the right word; it's just too big of a stretch.

The answer is actually from Greek. I knew the word, the clues just wound never have taken me there.

I think a better puzzle would have been to simple give several examples of ____________, like the hint at the top.

  57. Img_0189Egggst on Sep 29, 2007 05:47 AM

    Sorry, that's a dud.
Like the recent "mutant" clue, this doesn't lead to the answer word, merely to something that approximates it. That's just clumsy.

  58. FilePotato2bites on Sep 29, 2007 06:22 AM

Googled comic buzz words and got it but don't know how. Very difficult.

  59. FileDuckiedavey3 on Sep 29, 2007 08:07 AM

This must be one of the worst rebus-type puzzles I've seen here. I got the answer using the generous amounts of salt provided (especially at BGG), but I still don't see how this really works. Oh well, maybe it's just me.

  60. FileApplephosrik on Sep 29, 2007 11:30 AM

Wow, the google search in [58] is the only way I got it. Thanks. Like others, I have no idea how you are supposed to get that given that:

    1. It's a very obscure word
    2. Very difficult to spell
    3. The rebus does not even begin to sound like it

Future note to puzzle designers: Do not make the answer word something so obscure that only half of the people even know what it is.

Also a rebus should come very close to sounding like the answer word. If not then a clue must be given to drive the solver in the right direction. For example: the mutant-E one from the other day should have either had a "-T" or some sort of pirate theme or statement to drive the solver in the right direction.

  61. Avatar_profileStrawberryfigarojones on Sep 29, 2007 12:43 PM

    BOOOO!!!!!!

People have said it more eloquently, but this puzzle sucks. Even after having to have someone give me the answer, I still can't see what you were thinking.

It'd be like me making a puzzle with the word "win" on the top of a sedan, and the answer would be "Win an Oscar".

Please never make a puzzler again.

  62. FilePlumlseelba on Sep 29, 2007 01:03 PM

Any word that has 4 vowels in a row is not a real word in my book (and yes that includes SEQUOIA)

  63. FileRadishThosw on Sep 29, 2007 01:12 PM

Oh my God, that was awful. And you can't Google for it, because even if you spelled it wrong, you'll get hits for the misspellings that other people have typed. Even Google suggested a different way to spell it that was incorrect.

  64. PaxStrawberrymrsgottrocks on Sep 29, 2007 04:48 PM

[60] ..Wow, the google search in [58] is the only way I got it...

Me too. Googled and found it, but if you don't use Google (hubby used Alta Vista) you are probably still clueless. Have no idea how the clues should have been spoken to get the word.

  65. Avatar_profileApplekswitz on Sep 29, 2007 05:32 PM

I taught English for five years and still spelled it wrong about 10 times. Ugh.

  66. FilePumpkinJohnQ118 on Sep 29, 2007 06:41 PM

    lamelamelame this puzzle is.
[50] if u'r so sorry you should post hints in here...

please don't submit any more puzzles passed past that particular english student.

  67. FilePumpkinRickj4029 on Sep 29, 2007 10:30 PM

    Warped mind.

  68. FractalTomatodduensing on Aug 21, 2009 06:13 PM

    Poor, poor example of puzzle-making.

I knew the word, but I only solved it by googling "comic buzz words".

The right answer will begin with the letter O and end with the letter A.

  69. Aug080195Eggplantgusssr on Jul 08, 2010 07:51 AM

This is like the eighth time this word has been a one word wonder answer. That is waaaaaaay too many times, especially for a word with multiple "correct" spellings. Grrrr. And this was the worst...

  70. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Jun 05, 2011 07:47 PM

And for anyone else coming along late, the tomato should have had a -T1 (meaning subtract the first T). Then it might have been acceptable.

I will say that I got here by following a link to "other puzzles" by this author from a puzzle that was really exceptionally great. So don't knock the guy (or gal) too hard! I think this was before the days of the moderators. :)

  71. FileDuckiePatanga on Aug 11, 2011 06:31 PM

Go figure, this was easy for me and I spelled it right the first time. But just wait until tonight....I will probably be pulling my hair out.
