Had one with this solve method a while back, but this one clued it better.

I seem to be stuck. I thought I had something, but it fell apart.

what on earth is going on here?

[5] It's a code. Each letter inside the box stands for a letter in the alphabet. You could probably brute-force it with random guesses, but maybe - just maybe - there's a shortcut...

  8. FileAppleqwertyca on Oct 15, 2007 07:42 PM

    * It took you 9 minutes and 7 seconds to solve this puzzle.
    * You were the 11th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

    w00t highest score ever.

I guess now I know why they say your mama is always your mama.

Edit: Removed salt at request of MCTMike.

    # It took you 3 minutes and 18 seconds to solve this puzzle.
    # You were the 14th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

I liked the clue phrase. Fun stuff.

  10. Donimo_pirate_beatlesTomatoDonimo on Oct 15, 2007 07:34 PM

Not to nitpick, but I think "TDFO" should be "TSFO".

Also, could someone give a short lesson on how to avoid the... are they compression artifacts?... Is it as simple as using PNG and avoiding JPG?

  11. FileAppleMCTMike on Oct 15, 2007 07:45 PM

    [8] Thanks, Qwertyca!

  12. FileAppleMCTMike on Oct 15, 2007 07:39 PM

[10] Good catch - picture fixed.

  13. FileGarlicHope2002 on Oct 15, 2007 07:40 PM

The change in the fourth line did it for me.

  14. FileGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Oct 15, 2007 07:41 PM

    Me too! Thanks MCTMike!!

  15. FileBananaSephiroth2906 on Oct 15, 2007 07:41 PM

    But I don't get it :<

  16. FileAppleMCTMike on Oct 15, 2007 07:44 PM

[15] Hmmm. Did you figure out what number 9, "From the New World" refers to?

  17. Avatar_profileKiwiSilverSabre25 on Oct 15, 2007 07:43 PM

26th! Not a bad puzzle. Google turned out to be instrumental in my discovery of the solving method.

  18. 500full-wallace-_-gromit-in-the-wrong-trousers-screenshotAppleDan999 on Oct 15, 2007 07:53 PM

I brute forced it. Now to backsolve...

[later] Got it with the hint to use an external reference. Clever.

  19. FilePeachdiehard4life on Oct 15, 2007 07:49 PM

I know the reference, and I have the clue complete up to 1/2 of line four and none of line five...

I wish I new how to use the reference in some way...

  20. FileAppleMCTMike on Oct 15, 2007 07:52 PM

[19] Turns out our friend Antonin has a... cousin - of sorts.

  21. FileRadishBetaPrime on Oct 15, 2007 07:58 PM

Solved it. Interesting way to clue in. Does the first line meant anything? I thought it might mean rot9 cipher at first.

  22. FileAppleMCTMike on Oct 15, 2007 08:02 PM

[21] In part, it points out that it's a code. Separately, the 9 and the "From the New World" reference and the op.95 all refer the same thing

  23. FileDuckiedavey3 on Oct 15, 2007 08:03 PM

Thanks a million [10]! Took me 43 minutes to solve this ... too bad I didn't look at the blog for the first 40 of those minutes! Much easier with the right letters there.

  24. FileTomatobcgrote on Oct 15, 2007 08:03 PM

Great, thanks.... BIG difference between year mama and your mama!

  25. FilePeachdiehard4life on Oct 15, 2007 08:05 PM

Hmmm, turns out the reference isn't the key. It takes a bit of geek knowledge to make the leap.

But the key itself might be familiar enough save keystrokes wasted in pursuit of a key...

  26. FileAppleMCTMike on Oct 15, 2007 08:07 PM

[24] S'pose it d'pens how fur south year livin...

    :O

  27. FileAppleMCTMike on Oct 15, 2007 08:09 PM

[25] Right - the reference only gets you halfway to the true clue. But August problem solvers will find a solution right at their fingertips.

  28. FileGrapesthedude on Oct 15, 2007 08:11 PM

Nice one! Good puzzle. I like how the last line is special =) BTW, he's one of my favorites and that reference is my favorite from him.

  29. FileAppleMCTMike on Oct 15, 2007 08:35 PM

[28] Glad you liked it. I must admit, #9 is actually the only one of his I am familiar with...

  30. FileStrawberryhappyjosiah on Oct 15, 2007 08:55 PM

I liked it. Googling "from the new world" was all the help I needed.

  31. FilePumpkinJohn on Oct 15, 2007 09:14 PM

    Cute.

  32. Charo_white_bgBananawillco on Oct 15, 2007 09:45 PM

    stuck

  33. 11111Radishzestyonion on Oct 15, 2007 10:15 PM

    [32]second that
I know the name that I should and what op.95 is, but how do I put this stuff together?

  34. FileAppleMCTMike on Oct 15, 2007 10:19 PM

[33] Turns out Mr. op.95 isn't the only person with that last name. Find the other and you find the solving method.

  35. 11111Radishzestyonion on Oct 15, 2007 10:38 PM

    Thanks [34] Good Puzzle!
That puzzle was great once I was directed in the right direction!

  36. Avatar_profileStrawberrygregcrowe on Oct 15, 2007 10:50 PM

This really had me crying for some kind of mercy until I put all of the steps together. Thanks people! And thanks, MCTMike for a good puzzle!

  37. FileApplebreity on Oct 15, 2007 11:22 PM

    That was totally fun. Thanks!

  38. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Oct 16, 2007 12:56 AM

[10] Yes. For some reason, Tanga does not handle jpg's very well. But png's do just fine.

  39. FilePeachbenjaminlho on Oct 16, 2007 02:23 AM

Yeah...my first Tanga puzzle solved!!!!! Fun

  40. FileRadishThosw on Oct 16, 2007 05:14 AM

I *love* that guy, even though he can sometimes be a jerk.

  41. FileAppleLegomancer on Oct 16, 2007 05:55 AM

That's no way to talk about my mama.

  42. FileAppleLegomancer on Oct 16, 2007 05:58 AM

Also, the obvious answer, "horrible JPEG artifacts" isn't a single word.

  43. FilePearBigRob68 on Oct 16, 2007 06:35 AM

    i agree with (15), (32), and (33)

  44. FilePearBigRob68 on Oct 16, 2007 06:43 AM

    (1) It took you 1 MINUTE AND 26 SECONDS to solve this puzzle.
You were the 1ST TANGA MEMBER to solve this puzzle.
Average solve time: 2 MINUTES AND 39 SECONDS
Median solve time: 3 MINUTES AND 15 SECONDS
6.557% of Tanga members that have attempted this puzzle have solved it.
WHO DID THE MATH ON THAT ONE???

  45. Head_shotBananajppe5 on Oct 16, 2007 08:17 AM

But, the answer should have been "gbjn."!

  46. Head_shotBananajppe5 on Oct 16, 2007 08:18 AM

Oddly enough, I Tangaized the number 9 as the 9th letter in the code being an E becaue it's the symphony in E minor. Coincidently (some would say ironically) that works!

  47. FileAppleMCTMike on Oct 16, 2007 08:56 AM

[46] That's interesting - I worried about putting the #9 and op.95 in the puzzle for fear solvers would try to Tangify them.

  48. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Oct 16, 2007 01:29 PM

    [44] BigRob
