Puzzle for Thursday December 28, 2006 at 07:00 PM PST
You have already solved this puzzle.
It took you 1 minute and 39 seconds.
You are the 1st fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 2nd Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

Not quite sure how someone could have solved this before me but take longer to solve it.

  2. Avatar_profileCherriestek on Dec 28, 2006 07:16 PM

let me be the first to say: wtf?

  3. FilePancakestempus42 on Dec 28, 2006 07:17 PM

i guess it's one of those that you either see right away or don't see - any tips dodger?

  4. Firefly_shipAppledarkjedi26 on Dec 28, 2006 07:17 PM

I thought i had figured out the pattern, but its not working out, hrm...

  5. EdgewoodSailboatsplat169 on Dec 28, 2006 07:17 PM

is there a theme to the top answers

  6. FileAppleDodger on Dec 28, 2006 07:18 PM

    Read the first line carefully.

  7. FilePancakestempus42 on Dec 28, 2006 07:25 PM

i keep thinking brand names have to be involved, but that doesn't seem to work at all...

  8. PaxStrawberrymrsgottrocks on Dec 28, 2006 07:25 PM

It took you 8 minutes and 35 seconds.
You are the 8th fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 14th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

WHOOO HOOOO! And I did it all by my lonesome! For a brief and shining moment I am near the top solvers. Yippee!

  9. Avatar_profileApplekswitz on Dec 28, 2006 07:25 PM

Aargh. I have read the first line about 50 times... It's not helping.

  10. Avatar_profileCherriestek on Dec 28, 2006 07:26 PM

ok, i have beers in me and i'm gonna need some salt
i think i know the pertinent word in the first line, but I have no idea how to apply it...
and those numbers are throwing me off

  11. Avatar_profileApplekswitz on Dec 28, 2006 07:26 PM

tempus42- that's what I thought too.... but that could take forever!

  12. Avatar_profilePearcokeman4 on Dec 28, 2006 07:26 PM

thats what I have been trying....brand names am I thinking too hard?

  13. FilePancakestempus42 on Dec 28, 2006 07:26 PM

i imagine the numbers are just there for the usual Tanga purpose (after we get the words that go with the clues)

  14. Avatar_profileLemonrunner262 on Dec 28, 2006 07:27 PM

I know it's early, but some more salt would be nice...

  15. Firefly_shipAppledarkjedi26 on Dec 28, 2006 07:27 PM

yeah, I've been trying to work brand names as well. Nothing working...

  16. FileAppleDodger on Dec 28, 2006 07:27 PM

There are only two guiding words in the first line!

  17. Avatar_profileApplekswitz on Dec 28, 2006 07:29 PM

By first line do you mean first sentence or first chunk of material before the clues??

  18. FilePancakestempus42 on Dec 28, 2006 07:30 PM

i don't see any reason to prefer any one of "knock", "door", "come", or "in" -- for that matter, I have no idea why it should be obvious that any clue is in the first line at all.... (other than dodger says it's there) :(

  19. FileGarlicrandyzip on Dec 28, 2006 07:31 PM

I assume "arrayed" is a key word

  20. Avatar_profileAppleAshnak on Dec 28, 2006 07:34 PM

19 may be too much salt.

  21. Avatar_profileBananaRoads42 on Dec 28, 2006 07:34 PM

You have already solved this puzzle.
It took you 31 minutes and 52 seconds.
You are the 17th fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 17th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

I was lucky on this one. I stumbled on it.

Don't look at any particular word in the first line. It's more of a concept.

  22. Avatar_profileOrangeTheKeck on Dec 28, 2006 07:35 PM

[19] Is indeed a lot of salt. I was grateful for it, though.

  23. Avatar_profileWatermelonnvzblity on Dec 28, 2006 07:35 PM

that was quick once you get the "clue."

  24. Avatar_profileLemonrunner262 on Dec 28, 2006 07:36 PM

    thanks dodger!

  25. Avatar_profileKiwiBelle on Dec 28, 2006 07:37 PM

I liked that one. Once you figure the commonality it is very straight forward. I think [19] may be too salty - it was the one that got me on the right track.

  26. FilePancakestempus42 on Dec 28, 2006 07:39 PM

sad that i guess i still don't get the "clue"

  27. Firefly_shipAppledarkjedi26 on Dec 28, 2006 07:40 PM

    me neither

  28. Avatar_profilePotatoNotJeff on Dec 28, 2006 07:40 PM

Yeah. I'm still nowhere. I've come up with lots of possible commonalities, can never find more than one or two fitting answers to clues.

  29. Avatar_profileStrawberryallendoum on Dec 28, 2006 07:41 PM

I agree that 19 is too salty. Got without hints however. The "brand name" idea fails totally for the 5th item.

  30. Avatar_profilePearcokeman4 on Dec 28, 2006 07:42 PM

Man I suck at these... Even with the supposed [19] salt I am not seeing the connection

  31. EdgewoodSailboatsplat169 on Dec 28, 2006 07:43 PM

    me neither

  32. FileGarlicrandyzip on Dec 28, 2006 07:45 PM

Inever would have gotten this without the hints. I would have been stuck trying to fit brand names into an array.

  33. Avatar_profileKiwiBelle on Dec 28, 2006 07:45 PM

Unfortunately it is difficult to clue this one without a ton of salt. Just keep thinking/saying what Dodger has told you and looking at each item in the list. Is it too much of a hint if I suggest trying to visualize each item?

  34. FileAppleDodger on Dec 28, 2006 07:45 PM

GaryL, remember, the key to good hints is to be a little bit cryptic!

  35. Avatar_profileKiwibunnymama on Dec 28, 2006 07:46 PM

It took you 37 minutes and 16 seconds.
You are the 33rd fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 37th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

[31] is actually what got me thinking the right way.

  36. FileRadishThosw on Dec 28, 2006 07:46 PM

#35 is what did it for me.

  37. Avatar_profileKiwibunnymama on Dec 28, 2006 07:47 PM

Funny thing is, I actually had the paper matches clue correct before I figured out the key.

  38. Firefly_shipAppledarkjedi26 on Dec 28, 2006 07:47 PM

Thanks Belle, that did it for me!

  39. FilePancakestempus42 on Dec 28, 2006 07:48 PM

thanks, belle - that got it for me.... i kept trying to make words with "in" in them

so many red herrings in tonight's and last night's puzzles - i hope that isn't going to be a trend

  40. Avatar_profileWatermelonPatheos on Dec 28, 2006 07:48 PM

Wow.... I figured that out on my own, but had messed up on some of the clues the first time. I sat and analyzed it for a few minutes and realized I had made a mistake and viola it worked.

Now if I can just find the right case for my reading glasses, I can put them away and go back to sleep.

  41. Avatar_profileCherriesmoliver816 on Dec 28, 2006 07:48 PM

I just got it thanks to [35]. But I didn't get the Soy Sauce one.

  42. Avatar_profilePearmundane on Dec 28, 2006 07:48 PM

    Thanks Belle!

  43. Avatar_profileKiwiBelle on Dec 28, 2006 07:48 PM

I very rarely finish quickly enough to be able to help others so I have very little practice at giving clues that are cryptic. That wasn't too blatant was it?

  44. Avatar_profileApplekswitz on Dec 28, 2006 07:49 PM

It took you 47 minutes and 33 seconds.
You are the 54th fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 54th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

35 did it for me... along with dodger's comments about the first line.

  45. Avatar_profileWatermelonnvzblity on Dec 28, 2006 07:50 PM

some puzzles (like yesterday's) make me want to commit suicide like Sylvia Plath, but today isn't one of them.

  46. Avatar_profileCherriestek on Dec 28, 2006 07:50 PM

    (35) totally did it for me...
i had an AHA!! followed immediately by a DOH!!

It took you 32 minutes and 4 seconds.
You are the 46th fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 58th Tanga member to solve this puzzle

  47. FileDuckienrkii on Dec 28, 2006 07:50 PM

35 was a big clue, and it pushed me over the edge, thank goodness.

    Thanks Belle!

  48. Avatar_profileWatermelonjericho on Dec 28, 2006 07:51 PM

Man I feel stupid, but at least I got it with some salty hints

  49. Avatar_profilePearcokeman4 on Dec 28, 2006 07:52 PM

I am an idiot... still not seeing it and everyone...[sniff] got it but me...

  50. Avatar_profilePearahtitan on Dec 28, 2006 07:54 PM

You have already solved this puzzle.
It took you 3 minutes and 7 seconds.
You are the 16th fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 62nd Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

I had the "aha" moment without even noticing the key in the first line. A lucky break, no doubt. Neat puzzle.

  51. Avatar_profileOrangeQ on Dec 28, 2006 07:54 PM

Solved it but trying to figure out the tuna fish part...

  52. Avatar_profileCherriesv3rt1g0 on Dec 28, 2006 07:56 PM

    [33] Belle

    *lightbulb popped on*

That was a shaker full of salt.

    thank you!

  53. Avatar_profileKiwipmboos on Dec 28, 2006 07:57 PM

Yep visualization is the key... I would have been on brands forever... (especially since I found one for crude oil)

  54. FileGrapesEuphrasie on Dec 28, 2006 07:58 PM

I feel so stupid. It took a container of salt...

Still don't have the oil one though.

  55. FileStrawberryclemon79 on Dec 28, 2006 07:58 PM

Someone really needs to fix this messaging system so that numbers are maintained when a post is deleted. Stuff like "Oh, I got it from [35]" is utterly worthless once that happens.

  56. FileGrapesEuphrasie on Dec 28, 2006 07:59 PM

[35] is now [33] if you're still looking.

  57. Avatar_profileStrawberryFatherStorm on Dec 28, 2006 08:00 PM

"Come In" deed. actually two ways to use the salt. The actual obvoius one and the less direct path of a homonymous nature....

  58. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Dec 28, 2006 08:02 PM

    FYI [19] was removed

  59. Avatar_profilePlumdaved on Dec 28, 2006 08:03 PM

Wow. I think part of my brain just melted.

  60. FileStrawberryclemon79 on Dec 28, 2006 08:04 PM

Okay, I put it together, but I'm not sure why I was supposed to take that specific phrase as the primary hint instead of any of the three or four others in that passage.

  61. FileRaspberrydsmeyer on Dec 28, 2006 08:05 PM

Arrayed is not one of the two words needed to solve it.

  62. Avatar_profileKiwibunnymama on Dec 28, 2006 08:05 PM

Ahhh I see. There were 2 posts deleted. I was wondering why everyone was pointing to my post [35] as being helpful.
You all were talking about Belle's [33] which is super salty.

  63. Avatar_profilePearcokeman4 on Dec 28, 2006 08:06 PM

Finally.... sheesh was I on the wrong track. Thanks for the salt o ye smart puzzle solvers.

It's ok, I am good at other things. :)

  64. Avatar_profileStrawberrylarryhl on Dec 28, 2006 08:12 PM

visualization is the best salt on the table =)

  65. Avatar_profileCherriesDr_Faustus on Dec 28, 2006 08:14 PM

[19] threw me off, actually. Would it be too salty to wonder if instead of tuna, the salesman had Prince Albert? (my first comment ... apologies if too salty)

  66. FileStrawberrybizarrojoe on Dec 28, 2006 08:16 PM

Yeah, visualization is what helped me out. I can't think of any other salt that I could shake out :-)

  67. Avatar_profileGrapesdcell on Dec 28, 2006 08:19 PM

I agree with [65], tuna has always been related to something else in my mind.

  68. Avatar_profileWatermelonSingingDragon on Dec 28, 2006 08:26 PM

I was in a conundrum for a bit... but could not contain my glee once I figured it out with no hints!

  69. Avatar_profileWatermelonvaevictus on Dec 28, 2006 09:28 PM

Got it, but what does the text have to do with it? Is the text there to "frame" the list of words?

  70. AvatarApplebagherra on Dec 28, 2006 10:06 PM

the answer is misspelled according to where I live.
I in fact have a product in front of me that is highly popular and available in most of the US (and Mexico, and I believe I saw it in Canada) that is spelled differently by one letter.

This puzzle really has me fired up. Grrr.

  71. Avatar_profileCherriestimmertc on Dec 28, 2006 10:09 PM

The text was throwing me off, and not making any sense. Once I saw the suggestion to visualize, and a few more minutes of pondering, things started to fall into place. I actually had a couple of the words right without knowing it.

It took you 12 minutes and 8 seconds.
You are the 114th fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 215th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

  72. Avatar_profileOrangeBilliam on Dec 28, 2006 11:40 PM

It took you 5 minutes and 47 seconds.
You are the 87th fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 243rd Tanga member to solve this puzzle.

I liked that one. It was subtle, but the clues were all there, from beginning to end.

  73. Avatar_1156296432.jpgOrangesedjtroll on Dec 29, 2006 02:46 AM

Seriously, if a post is removed, please indicate it... people were saying "[19] is too salty," and [19] was (or is now, anyway) talking about "array"... how confusing!

  74. Avatar_profileWatermelonFan3car on Dec 29, 2006 06:20 AM

    65...yes!

  75. Avatar_profileGrapesshrapnel on Dec 29, 2006 08:08 AM

Visualization got it for me. I don't see any hints for that line of thinking in the puzzle itself, though, even after solving it.

There's an alternate for tuna fish? Weird.

  76. Avatar_profilePeachMease19 on Dec 29, 2006 08:28 AM

I could use some salt for my answer.

  77. Avatar_profilePeachMease19 on Dec 29, 2006 08:30 AM

BTW, totally unrelated. What is the origen of the word salt in this community?

  78. Avatar_profileAppleBroggi on Dec 29, 2006 08:32 AM

    Mease19 - [65] was the salt I needed.

  79. Avatar_profileAcehighfloydelity on Dec 29, 2006 09:57 AM

@ Mease19 - From what i understand (this was before i arrived here) salt came from a puzzle where someone was trying to give a hint but somehow gave the answer instead.. the answer was salt

  80. TangausagiAppleshugyosha on Dec 29, 2006 11:08 AM

heh, thought I had the answer and was devastated when I got the not correct response...then all the hints here seemed to point to the thing I had done and had come up wrong!

Turned out I had spelled the thing wrong.

  81. TangausagiAppleshugyosha on Dec 29, 2006 11:59 AM

my mis-spelling would not have happened if I had finished the puzzle properly, so it was my fault really.

  82. Avatar_profileOrangehederj on Dec 29, 2006 03:04 PM

I agree with [70} and had a similar experience to [80], I had guessed the right answer with most of the correct hints, but typed it in with the spelling I was used to. Then had to sit and try and figure out what went wrong.

  83. MeKiwipadlocksan on Dec 30, 2006 12:40 AM

thanks to [65] I finally got it and I can finally see how the first paragraph releates. But I am 5 houre too late. I have only solved 5 of this thing in the 1/2 month I have been working them. It is starting to lose its fun, for me.
But I am sure that you 15-second solvers wouldn't understand that.

  84. FileGarlicdharmaRN on Apr 15, 2012 01:19 AM

The "Come In" makes perfect sense now.... yes, visualize each item....
