Ahh. I was trying to do something a little more clever with it--the answer's a little more straightforward. (And the misspelling of "buoyancies" isn't relevant.)

  2. Avatar_profileEggplantninjoo on Oct 25, 2007 07:20 PM

Wow, second in 18 minutes. That's a real nice, original puzzle. Good job. Took me some time, but I really appreciate it.

  3. FileAppleLegomancer on Oct 25, 2007 07:33 PM

    #5! Very cool!

  4. Avatar_profilePancakesrandomcyn on Oct 25, 2007 07:39 PM

    Eh. A little red-herringy isn't it?

  5. Avatar_profileKiwiLeezer on Oct 25, 2007 07:56 PM

I'm afraid to ask what a "fct" is.

  6. FileGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Oct 25, 2007 07:57 PM

    Frequently Confusing Tanga?

  7. Avatar_profileEggplantninjoo on Oct 25, 2007 08:00 PM

I don't know what an fct is, but the fact it's fcts is very important.

  8. Avatar_profileKiwiyendi on Oct 25, 2007 08:01 PM

Wow. I spent nearly an hour on this (with breaks for the other puzzles) before realizing just how much I'd overthought this one. And I'm still twelfth.

  9. Shopping_bag_apTomatoshopper1 on Oct 25, 2007 08:19 PM

    . . . a bit abstemious w/the directions, eh?

  10. FileEggRPardoe on Oct 25, 2007 08:28 PM

Nice Aha! moment and then the answer followed. Well done.

  11. Avatar_profileLemonEllieKat on Oct 25, 2007 08:30 PM

Ok I think I get the fcts thing... still needing a li'l salt though...

  12. FilePancakesjmcintyre on Oct 25, 2007 08:33 PM

Yes, very nice. I thought of the answer word when I realized what was going on, but I didn't realize it was actually the answer until I saw that the instructions were duoliteral.

  13. FileGarlicHope2002 on Oct 25, 2007 08:40 PM

I don't get what the rest of the puzzle had to do with it. I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

  14. FileGarlicHope2002 on Oct 25, 2007 08:41 PM

    Double post....sorry

  15. FileGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Oct 25, 2007 08:41 PM

[12] Thanks! That was the salt that I needed... never thought to go that way for the answer.

  16. MePumpkinMustangChick72 on Oct 25, 2007 08:53 PM

:( totally lost, I would appreciate any hints, I feel very dumb right now....

  17. Avatar_12-08Pancakesthreehojos on Oct 25, 2007 08:54 PM

I've gone down so many wrongs paths with this one I think I've confused myself!

  18. MePumpkinMustangChick72 on Oct 25, 2007 09:04 PM

I have no clue, I am giving this one up...for now at least

  19. FileGarlicBlueDevilDucky on Oct 25, 2007 09:14 PM

after 2 hours and 35 solves, I left some salt over at BGG

  20. Avatar_profileLemonEllieKat on Oct 25, 2007 09:28 PM

WOO. Thanks for salt [19] <3

  21. FileEggplantunilab98 on Oct 25, 2007 10:13 PM

Yes, agreed thank you for the salt, BDD!

  22. FilePeachbenjaminlho on Oct 25, 2007 11:21 PM

Still totally clueless....SALT!!!!!!!!Please...even after BGG. Judging that there is only 53 completions, I think its time for some help

  23. FileRadishSpire on Oct 26, 2007 12:36 AM

I'm not getting it. Is it significant that "buoyancies" is misspelled, or would the puzzle work either way?

  24. FileAppleqwertyca on Oct 26, 2007 12:44 AM

    [23] Read [1]...

  25. FileTomatoMurdoctor on Oct 26, 2007 05:43 AM

Just corrected the spelling of "buoyancies"... though the puzzle works either way.

  26. FileKiwijgoewert on Oct 26, 2007 07:42 AM

Hrm... I must be going the wrong direction, but is trying to figure out what the question is the way to go or is it the words that are important?

I know the question, and I know the answer to the question... but it isn't working.

  27. Avatar_profileOnionnytekien on Oct 26, 2007 07:56 AM

That was really good. I had assumed I knew what the instructions were saying, but when I reread them the 30th time or so, I figured it out.

  28. Avatar_profileOrangeflippy on Oct 26, 2007 08:09 AM

Nice. The convoluted-ness of the words should have tipped me off sooner.

  29. Avatar_profilePearguildie77 on Oct 26, 2007 08:35 AM

Well, I get what they have in common. I see that fcts is intentional. I've tried putting things in different orders...I'm not getting this one and my melon is about to explode! I've read through all the salt here and BGG and still nothing. Any more help for the monumentally stupid??? (that'd be me, by the way)

  30. FilePeppercyncat on Oct 26, 2007 09:00 AM

The answer is the shortest and most common word that meets 2 criteria:

    1. the description hinted in BGG
    2. the description clued by the last line in the puzzle.

I found this piece of trivia by desperately googling phrases that describe what all those words in the puzzle have in common.

  31. FilePeppercyncat on Oct 26, 2007 09:06 AM

[30] Back solving now makes me realize that using FCTS would have been simpler and more straightforward.

  32. FileAcegameczar on Oct 26, 2007 09:34 AM

    [30] /boggle

    A. I am correctly aligned.

    1. I looked on BGG and I am not sure which "description" this is about.

  33. FilePeppercyncat on Oct 26, 2007 09:55 AM

[32] I was referring to BlueDevilDucky's clue in BGG:

"Not counting the instructions, what do all of the words have in common?"

  34. FileBananaDarkwind on Oct 26, 2007 09:56 AM

    I finally had my "duh" moment and got it. I was singularly focused on searching on what they had in common and not whether or not they might have friends with common interests. ;-}

  35. FileAcegameczar on Oct 26, 2007 09:58 AM

[33] Doesn't my first item in [30] address that or am I lost from the start?

  36. AvatarCarrotrobrizob on Oct 26, 2007 10:04 AM

I got the answer, but I feel like I'm missing something. I'll be interested to see the solution.

  37. FilePeppercyncat on Oct 26, 2007 10:07 AM

    [35] It's not about alignment.

  38. FileAcegameczar on Oct 26, 2007 10:13 AM

[37] Look like I need to reboot then as I am going in the completely wrong direction.

Would a person of character say that the common element is a small one?

  39. FilePeppercyncat on Oct 26, 2007 10:20 AM

[38] What the words have in common has nothing to do with their meanings. Just look at them.

  40. FileAcegameczar on Oct 26, 2007 10:33 AM

[39] Thanks, got it. I was once again blinded by locking in on one idea that kept me from seeing something simple.

  41. FileDuckiedavey3 on Oct 26, 2007 11:20 AM

    144th after 1 hour, 19 minutes.

Took me a while to see what the words have in common (probably 1 hour, 18 minutes!). After that it was easy ... nice puzzle!

  42. FilePumpkinJohn on Oct 26, 2007 12:04 PM

Honestly... is this puzzle some kind of joke? ;)

  43. Charo_white_bgBananawillco on Oct 26, 2007 12:12 PM

    nice

  44. Avatar_profileKiwiLeezer on Oct 26, 2007 02:41 PM

Interesting. I wasn't a big fan of this one at first, but now that I've solved it, I have to admit it's pretty clever. Hard though.

  45. Avatar_profilePlumvilsack on Oct 26, 2007 03:27 PM

that puzzle forced me to be abstemious for awhile.

  46. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Oct 27, 2007 02:15 PM

    [45] vilsack
I was just wondering if that word existed... Thanks!
