Got the fifth one, finally. Hope it's a theme.

  2. Avatar_profileWatermelonFawkes on Jan 10, 2007 07:12 PM

    Shouldn't that be squalUs?

  3. FileDuckienrkii on Jan 10, 2007 07:12 PM

I have the third, and am also hoping it's a theme. Think we have the same theme in mind?

  4. FileApplesanloublues on Jan 10, 2007 07:13 PM

Wow, you so don't need to do any of the clues.

Sidenote, Night of the Lepus was an awesome movie.

  5. FileDuckienrkii on Jan 10, 2007 07:14 PM

Uethym, it is the same theme. 2 down...

Finally! saltless again. I was starting to get discouraged!

Got second, third and fifth and now I have to back fill.

Got it with just the 3rd, 5th, and 6th. There is a theme, but without giving too much away, the *form* of the answers are not the same throughout, which made getting one of them in particular somewhat of a stretch. The final answer is quite clever, though.

  9. Firefly_shipAppledarkjedi26 on Jan 10, 2007 07:16 PM

still trying to figure out the theme

  10. Avatar_profileWatermelonFawkes on Jan 10, 2007 07:21 PM

Brilliant answer. You can lateral solve it from the little story up top. I didn't, got it the old fashioned way, but am kicking myself.

    Bravo.

    think i finally got #3

  12. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 10, 2007 07:23 PM

    [2] Fawkes
    Squalis is correct

  13. Avatar_profilePearglsonn on Jan 10, 2007 07:23 PM

    Totally got it laterally. Oi!

  14. Avatar_profileWatermelonFawkes on Jan 10, 2007 07:26 PM

[12] Solved it without the squalis, so have no idea what it should be. This puzzle can drive you loony if you're not careful. I found the canis, felis and lepus to be the easiest.

  15. FileDuckienrkii on Jan 10, 2007 07:29 PM

I got it with only #3 and #5. I liked this!

Gotta figure out what the other 4 were though....

  16. AvatarApplebagherra on Jan 10, 2007 07:30 PM

    a Squalus is a dog-faced shark.
Squalis would be more than one.

I have the second half of all the phrases, but I can't figure out what to do with them. And I really can't figure out what the heck a Badger Bunny is!

  17. Avatar_profileWatermelonFawkes on Jan 10, 2007 07:32 PM

[16] Jae, read what you wrote again. You'll kick yourself.

    yeah, I already did
I have two of them now

    Mike,
    very punny, I liked it!

Hmmm - maybe it should be squalus - I don't know enough and I haven't delved enough into my google searches

Got it with three, five and a crossword solver. Still trying to get the other four. A thesaurus is your friend.

    Google "crossword solver"
I usually use the one at allwords.com

  27. Avatar_profileGrapeshenwy on Jan 10, 2007 07:43 PM

Got it with 3 and 5. I think I'm going to pass on backsolving for the time being.

    I usually use www.unscramble.net

  29. Firefly_shipAppledarkjedi26 on Jan 10, 2007 07:47 PM

that took a lot longer than it should have. Got it with 3, 5 and 6 as well. it was Pun-a-Rific

Those badgers should really be flying by now!

  31. Avatar_profileWatermelonDebb on Jan 10, 2007 07:50 PM

Great puzzle - so glad I didn't have to figure out all these characters to get the answer. I can't wait until tomorrow to see the whole solution.

  32. FileOrangeGowan on Jan 10, 2007 07:51 PM

That is so very very wrong.

I kept seeing people say that you didn't have to solve the clues so I kept reading the story over and over.

    SO wrong. :D

  33. Avatar_profileGrapeshenwy on Jan 10, 2007 07:51 PM

So, this puzzle sort of fills out the first batch of user-submitted entries. I was just looking over the past week and change and thinking about which ones I liked best.

Overall, the top three (in no particular order) I enjoyed most were

    Mark's Airport puzzle
    Nancy's Simile puzzle
    Scott's Braile puzzle

They were all fun to complete, which for me is the point of doing these things. Without that, working my way through these starts to be an excercise in frustration or a job rather than entertainment.

  34. Avatar_profileGrapeswarbanner on Jan 10, 2007 07:51 PM

4 and 5 were all I got. Even with the theme and the answer, I find the backsolving bizarre. There was a shark in there? Boy, did I miss out. And I don't at all get how the only rodentia I can think of was "Finn-ish", no matter how I pun it out. Ah well, I got the answer, so that's all folks!

  35. FilePlumtada on Jan 10, 2007 07:52 PM

    Is BGG Tanga thread down?

  36. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 10, 2007 07:54 PM

Someone posted a test message on BGG in the last minute, so I think it's up

  37. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 10, 2007 07:58 PM

    BGG is up

  38. FileRadishThosw on Jul 13, 2007 01:27 PM

Okay, I told myself I was going to wait an hour before I posted. Fortunately, I haven't seen any requests for salt yet - so that makes me feel good.

Sorry about #4. I know it's a stretch, but I couldn't make the other choices I thought of fit a one-worded or dashed clue. #6 was the same way. Yeah, there's a sibilant actor's last name I could have used, but I thought it would give away the theme too easily.

  39. Avatar_profileWatermelonFawkes on Jan 10, 2007 08:04 PM

Let me guess Mike: you thought up the punny answer, wrote the story, then made the clues. :D

  40. Avatar_profileGrapesChachito on Jan 10, 2007 08:04 PM

That's great. When I read the story I actually muttered the answer to myself but didn't see any way it could fit. Too funny!

  41. FileRadishThosw on Jan 10, 2007 08:04 PM

Actually, it was clues first, then answer, then story.

  42. FileAppleDodger on Jan 10, 2007 08:06 PM

I've got #3,#4, #5 and #6. Enough to get the answer but am stuck trying to backsolve 1,& 2.

  43. Avatar_profileWatermelonFawkes on Jan 10, 2007 08:07 PM

    At 13:31, I'm still 8th fastest.

    Average solve times are 27:30.

People are being very patient with the condiment requests today. In any case, it doesn't seem to be an *easy* puzzle.

  44. FilePlumtada on Jan 10, 2007 08:07 PM

Thosw, I'm dumb tonight. Sprinkle some brain salt this way.

The only one I didn't backsolve was #2. Geekmail anyone?

  52. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 10, 2007 08:26 PM

    [51] Gowan
    Geekmail sent with some salt

  53. FilePancakesjmcintyre on Jan 10, 2007 08:26 PM

Salt-free for me again tonight, and very nice puzzle. Bit of back-solving to do (I got it with only #s 3 and 6). Pretty sure I had the theme after #3, but it took me walking away from it for a bit and letting my mind wander before I figured out #6.

Big ups to you, Mike, and the other Tangans who contributed puzzles!

  54. Phi3CornPhilana on Jan 10, 2007 08:26 PM

#2 is the only one stumping me too.

  55. FilePumpkinJohn on Jan 10, 2007 08:27 PM

Got it with 3 answers. I wish I had the energy to back-solve the rest.

    EXCELLENT answer, though!

  56. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 10, 2007 08:28 PM

#2 is contemporary while others are not

edit: maybe I should have said "others are much older (some much much older)"

  57. FilePumpkinJohn on Jan 10, 2007 08:30 PM

Google Jim Toomey for some #2 salt.

  60. FileDuckiedavey3 on Jan 10, 2007 08:38 PM

This was a good puzzle (salt-free, but it took me over 50 minutes because I went down the wrong track). Really only needed the text at the top to solve it.

  61. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 10, 2007 08:40 PM

    Groan!!!!
I juse re-read the top again.

    Shame on you Mike!

nice! Major aha/groan with the answer. Puntastic.

  63. FilePepperdajagr on Jan 10, 2007 08:45 PM

I couldn't get this one without a huge dose of salt, and even now, I've not been able to back-solve any of the three that I didn't have. This one...just isn't working for me.

  64. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 10, 2007 08:49 PM

  65. FilePlumtada on Jan 10, 2007 08:49 PM

Ain't got a clue. Guess you gotta read the comics.

  66. FilePepperdajagr on Jan 10, 2007 08:50 PM

1, 4, and 6. Actually, 2, as well--I can't see how I was supposed to get the answer that someone salted from what was given.

  67. Avatar_profileGrapescarol on Jan 10, 2007 08:51 PM

Is the use of the word "salt" (to mean hints) just Tanga slang or is it traditional puzzle slang or what? Curious about this term.

  68. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 10, 2007 08:52 PM

  70. 2458377427_39b86a6bf0CarrotMilkyway on Jan 10, 2007 08:55 PM

Wow,that was some puzzle. I'm not sure of 2 and 6 but I got the answer with the help of the text for context. The answers to the clues are in the same vein but not as much help guessing as the text. I didn't get the answer as a pun if it was one.

  71. 2458377427_39b86a6bf0CarrotMilkyway on Jan 10, 2007 08:56 PM

salt is unique to Tanga. In one of the first puzzles the answer was salt and it was typed in as a comment instead of an answer. The ultimate salt!

  72. FileClockmust67 on Jan 10, 2007 08:59 PM

red the pun is in the answer to the text not in the clues.

  75. Avatar_profileWatermelonjericho on Jan 10, 2007 09:07 PM

I think I got 3 and 5 since it led me to the right answer, but I'll have to see if I can backsolve the rest. Tough!

  76. FilePepperdajagr on Jan 10, 2007 09:10 PM

I think I'll have to file this one under "clever, but not up my alley." I don't want to disparage the puzzlemaker (especially since I know mine caused some serious headaches out there), so I think my brain just wasn't willing to go the right direction tonight. Maybe it was the 0-dark-30 meeting at work this morning. :) Thanks for those who prodded me in the right direction so I can at least sleep tonight!

  77. Avatar_profileStrawberryKentuckyKid on Jan 10, 2007 09:16 PM

  78. Avatar_profilePlumdaved on Jan 10, 2007 09:22 PM

Oh, ouch. That answer hurt my punny bone.

  79. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Jan 10, 2007 09:29 PM

you just couldn't help yourself with the "serious headache" statement, could you!

  80. Avatar_profileOrangedlp on Jan 10, 2007 09:47 PM

    Great puzzle!!

Those who think the only pun is in the answer have apparently not yet solved #1, or else not thought about it enough. I was going to point out an error in the puzzle, since there are two inhabitants of the same habitat that fit the letter, but one of them is sticky and the other one is a marsupial. Until I realized HOW the marsupial is also "sticky"... and GROANED at the great pun.

(I could just leave it at that, but for SOME reason I feel the need to add...)

    MUCH better than yesterday!

  87. FileGrapesEuphrasie on Jan 11, 2007 08:59 AM

Oh wow. Now that I backsolved all the clues, they make a lot more sense. I was thinking of several of them...just couldn't figure out how the clue fit exactly. They all work though.

  88. Avatar_profileGrapesraymulford on Jan 11, 2007 09:30 AM

Jeeze, how awful. I mean, utterly devoid of intelligence. Completely off track from the get-go.

Of course, I'm referring to myself and the struggles I suffer every time I click that big red question mark.

This puzzle, on the other hand, was great! Thanks for the enjoyable challenge. I was completely lost until something clicked on one of the clues while I was reading the morning paper (the only section I can regularly comprehend).

I still can't back-solve one of them so looking forward to the solution.

I came here just to ask that same thing. Are we going to find out who tonight's puzzle is before it actually gets posted?

  96. FileRadishThosw on Jan 11, 2007 04:20 PM

I'm putting some of this good karma away to use later when and if any of my other puzzles show up.

    :u)

On another note, as of the time of this post, 12 other people have beaten 6 seconds to solve. You tell me there isn't some answer-sharing going on!

  97. Avatar_profileGrapesshrapnel on Jan 12, 2007 09:26 AM

Hmmm, even after viewing the solution I realize that I haven't heard of the sticky marsupial. And I don't understand the clue for the rodentia, though I had backsolved it. Then, since I had squalis, lepus, and rodentia, I assumed that the species was an integral part of the solutions for the others.

I ended up using a crossword solver with 3 letters, only 2 of which I'd gotten from the clues. Rough.

  98. Avatar_profileWatermelonMarkieMark on Jan 12, 2007 09:46 AM

    >On another note, as of the time of this post, 12 other people have beaten 6 seconds to solve. You tell me there isn't some answer-sharing going on!

I think what's actually going on is that one person (or multiple single persons) have created multiple tanga accounts, so they can get more tanga points than anyone else is getting, and bid the rest of us out in auctions.
