3 seconds off. :-( Somebody beat me so I feel better. ;-)
Lots of possibilities--maybe too many?
oh wow, a different blog for each puzzle.
You have already solved this puzzle.
It took you 4 minutes and 5 seconds.
You are the 9th fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 11th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
Yeah, took me a while to scale down the possibilities, Dodger.
Huh? What incredibly obvious aspect of this puzzle am I missing?
I thought so, Dodger, until one possibility made all the others fall into place.
You have already solved this puzzle.
It took you 5 minutes and 34 seconds.
You are the 18th fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 20th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
That was fun ... lots of possibilities, but they narrow down quickly.
They narrow down quickly, eh? [scratches her head and goes back to staring at the puzzle]
very interesting puzzle, but i like it
Without giving anything away, did anyone make any connection to the symbol in the bottom right corner? I didn't use it. Did I miss something?
is the background important?
That symbol is the author's "signature."
there are no instructions....
What are you supposed to do?
[12] rpvp40
that's the signature of the author Arnott
There are enough spots with fewer possibilities, that you can narrow it down to what you need.
I have an idea, but an answer with three vowels in a row?
Now that all the Rainmen have posted their supersonic savant times, how about a hint or 2 for the unwashed masses? :-)
Wow, I totally took the wrong approach to start, but ended up getting it.
And the image is an "R Knot"
Great Puzzle Dave!
-T
huh?
[12] That's just Dave Arnott's (R-Knot - get it?) siggy
You have already solved this puzzle.
It took you 4 minutes and 26 seconds.
You are the 16th fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 44th Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
I got it with two letters, but I don't yet have the proper method used to figure it out.
I think this is my first time in the top 50.
That R logo in the bottom right is the author's signature - David Arnott

do you need to anagram at the end?
Alrighty then. I guess I'll just wait on some salt over on BGG. Too stupid for this one on my own.
Background is irrelevant.
two perfectly good answers (the first one didn't work)
That was a neat one...much easier for me than 7pm (for some weird reason).
Fastest method is to identify the couple of pairs with just one or two options and feed into a xword solver...
You are the 53rd fastest Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
You were the 52nd Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
Anybody have this happen to them before? If I'm the 52nd member to solve, how can I be 53rd fastest when I solve it? Simultaneous entry? I know I was slow, but...
[25] dfharrin
no anagramming
[30] someone faster than you answered between the time you solved & the time you clicked back on the puzzle page to look at your stats.
Ouch. I had the right idea, but was way off on the first half of the word.
How is this one easier than the 7 pm?
[29] so is this thing about pairs?
nevermind, i think i got it
[34] barneshome - I was being stupid at 7pm.
Thanks MrPlow clearly my solve times aren't the only things that are slow at this end of the keyboard.
wow, I feel silly... it's amazing how one letter wrong can really screw you up. 27 minutes later, I have a red hand print on my forehead
same here, one missed letter set me back about the same.
just a thought: We will have the full 24hours timespan to work on the puzzles, right? In otherwords, we get more than 1 hr per puzzle in order to get them done on time. Or will we have to stay up all night?
The answers I was getting meant there were over 15,000 possibilities. Not all of them were words, but it took a while to construct something legible by hand.
I should have written an algorithm

[36] KentuckyKid -
I've figured out what path to head down (finally), but there are a lot of choices along that path.
if we were all as smart as [42] there would be no hunger in the world
Aaaargh! Are all of the three-letter words common everyday words? Or are there some obscure ones in there? I've only got three certain letters and can't seem to narrow it down further.
okay, so I wrote a program to try and solve it for me.
I gave it a scrabble dictionary and it told me there are no valid answers.
Is it a nine letter word?
[45] & [46] : All everyday words, everyday 9 letter answer
am i missing some possible letters? I have this many:
10 2 6 1 3 4 1 3 1
Really cool submission, Dave. It's such a minimalist puzzle--no clues (well, one subtle one), and yet you work your way slowly to the answer. Great job!
[47]everyday 9 letter answer
Maybe in your neck of the woods. I see the word a few times a year tops on average and I've probaly said it less than a dozen times in my life.
Yeouch! Turns out I had one wrong letter in the three I thought I was sure of; enough to throw me way off.
At least I got it during the first hour... :þ
[50] Well, it's recognizable as a word, as opposed to something like 'navicular' or 'nodulated'
[50] i see it much more often, but i guess it has to do with a hobby of mine. (-:
You were the 141st Tanga member to solve this puzzle.
About 55% of members who have attempted this puzzle have solved it.
I figure there are about 300 or so of us solving these right now.
is there an easier way to solve this one other than brute force?
Ouch! That stung more than it should have...
this helped me catch the one or two i was missing: http://www.scrabble.org.au/words/3sdefs.htm#B
AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!
Ahem...salt, please.
Thanks Larry et al.
The background is not completely irrelevant, but you don't need it to solve the puzzle. I think, however, you'll "see" it better once you solve it.
Leadfoot, my computer found only one answer. I'm curious as to what your second one could be (I'm Arnott over at BGG).
Oh, and Fawkes..?
[29] nice :)
Arnott! This one has taken me longer than any other, and I've been here since day one. I'm in pain. You win, sir. How about a little love from the master? I'm dying, here!
Is there some pattern to the missing letters, or is it just a matter of running through all the possible combinations until one makes sense?
Got it. I went WAY too far in the wrong direction. When I realized it, I almost wept.
Nice - salt free too
Just stiitng down to work throughthe puzzles now. Were people realy up all night doing these?!?
Got it iterative through all the combinations with a crossword solver, then jsut trial and error cut & paste. Not my cup of tea -- I like puzzles that you have to bend your brain to figure out how to solve, but once you hit on the right approach it's not a lot of work to get the answer. This one's just the opposite -- it was pretty obvious what to do (to me anywya), but it was a real tedium to work through all the combinations to figure out the right one.
