OK, I think I have all the common names (common to me anyway - I had to change one) but still not getting anything that makes sense. I am probably applying the numbers incorrectly, especially the ones w/ the "+" in 'em. Any more salt?
Well I tried using what I thought were the "right" numbers but it gave me something that sounded like (not really spelled like) a girl's name. Tried that and fixing the spelling and go nowhere.
Even with a few wrong I still managed to get something that looked and sounded close enough to be a word. So I tried variations of the word until I got the right spelling. Nice puzzle. It was hard to know what one person thought was the right answer for some of those. And I'd swear there is an even more common name for one of them... at least in the racing scene. Overall, a good puzzle. Keep em coming.
Yes, step one was (to me) pretty obvious, though it took a bit of work to pick out the right common name for each. Thankfully the cryptic-crossword numbers helped. But [24] was just what I needed for stage 2.

[1] I think they are just word lengths. I have all but CaCO3 (if they are word lengths, I only have a 7-letter word for that one)
Haven't figured out what to do with them, yet.

CaCO3 is a bit of a stretch (not my first thought either)- but the necessary word is found at Wiki

Got it! I was right about the parenthesized numbers, wrong about CaCO3.

[20] Think of the "+" as a space. (Not that I know what to do with my list of common names either...)
