Puzzle Discussion

Sweet, first. The only thing is, I was going to make a Cryptopix with the same answer.
Did the punctuation/abbreviation dance for a while.
great puzzle, I hate punctuation though.
Wish I had abbreviated something first -- I could have been first!
Rock On:
You are a freaking genius!!, you solved this puzzle.

Can't... get...spelling!!!!!
spelling killed me
101st because I didn't abbreviate! Grrrrr....
Pretty annoying that you have to get just the right abbreviations and punctuations. I tried about 6 variations before I got the right one.
You solved this puzzle in 2 minutes and 17 seconds and were the 86th Tanga member to solve it. You earned 25 points for solving this.
Even though I had this puzzle in a few seconds, had no idea what it was looking for until I googled it.
Very appropriate that I'm now watching Across the Universe. Loved it.
I too had to type it half a dozen times to figure out the magic combination.
Easy puzzle, stupid abbreviation :(
The answer is in the form in which it normally appears, so the abbreviation issues are not so bad.
[14] Makes you have to look it up and see how it normally appears, which is frustrating when you know the answer.
Can we maybe agree not to use punctuations or abbreviations as a standard guideline, unless it's actually part of the puzzle? Just a question. Has such a guideline been considered before?
[1] Heh. I did and submitted it, but it never ran.
[15] On the other hand, it's not that different from knowing the answer and yet being unsure how to spell the answer.
Damn spelling and abbreviation. It does use the usual form, but I didn't remember the usual form. Oh well.
Got it with a few and guessing
Abbreviation bit me again!
-JEEP
It was really annoying to get it immediately and come in way behind trying to figure out the exact grammar. Grrrrr.
Again with the punctuation thing. Grant it, it did end up being what I thought was the correct punctuation. A little research reveals, that it isn't exactly how it was on teh original artwork.
Incidentally is that DMB in the lower right?
Actually, how hard would it be for the Tanga software to strip out all punctuation and spaces before comparing the entry to the answer? Then it would treat "hitch hiker's guide", "hitchhiker's guide", and "hitchhikers guide" as all the same guess.
Sweet puzzle answer. A long time ago I was thinking about doing one with the same answer, in fact I think it was twenty years ago today!
I was not complaining about the abbreviation or punctuation, just merely trying to expain frustration. It doesn't kill me to try a few things first.
Points aren't what makes me like or dislike a puzzle. I was fifth on one I thought was pretty bad just a week or so ago. But some people get frustrated if they have to make several tries and it lowers their ranking. It can be fun to see a low solve number come up, though.
Nice puzzle, BTW.
salt?
I figured I could get it with a little help from my friends. If not now, then when I'm 64.
No, the second picture is definitely not salt . . .
[28] If you can't get it, maybe a Norwegian would.
Thx. for the compliments. That was my 1st cryptopx. Sry. bout the abbrev. but it's correct spelling.
JJcool yes, that's DMB
Abbreviation & possessive caught me up for some unnecessary seconds..... nice puzzle tho
You solved this puzzle in 1 minute and 45 seconds and were the 417th Tanga member to solve it. You earned 10 points for solving this.
nice puzzle
You are a freaking genius!!, you solved this puzzle.
You solved this puzzle in 48 seconds and were the 443rd Tanga member to solve it. You earned 10 points for solving this.
would've been less than 20 if the punctuation and spelling weren't necessary...
What WOULD you do if I sang you a song?
i have no clue on any of that, 2nd and 4th i canguess, but stumped on rest
yes - abbreviation IS the correct spelling - one of the greatest works of art in ANY medium EVER. Great crypto.
Had the answer with the first two images then abbreviation and "." and "'" were the rest of the time...
Why can't they ignore punctuation, it is such a trivial thing
What song would you sing Spud? Know anything by the Silver Beetles?
great puzzle had it immediately with the first two pics. Google gives correct punct & abbrev from wiki
hate punctuation had it in 10 seconds and had to play around with it!!!
There is no punctuation on the album cover itself, other than a random colon ":" under the abbreviation.
And yes, stripping punctuation and spaces is a rather easy programming step. I first did it in COBOL in 1969 as an exercise in learning to program, and later wrote a bunch of PL/1 procs that did the same thing, as well as capitalizing the proper words in titles, and forcing all upper case or lower case in other answers. Made parsing answers a LOT easier.
eh. edited.
great puzzle. overrated band.
[45] overrated? .. Nah.. but thats just my opinion... :o)
BUT..ya the punct. was a bummer
Very FRUSTRATED!!!! had the answer in 2 seconds and nothing i type in works. What am i doing wrong? Help!!
I know what it is but can't seem to find the text combo abbriviation punctuation to match.
The cursed period messed me up. Perhaps not the abbreviation your used to.
I seem to be taking some heat for the abbreviation. I just figured if I spelled it wrong without the abbreviation then I would get complaints that it wasn't spelled correctly. Damn if you do, Damned if you don't I guess.
I guess the fact that I spell horribly is a bonus for me. I pretty much google every answer first just to get a good suggestion. and usually my first attempt is the right one. Google gave me the proper abbreviation & punctuation on the first go.
You solved this puzzle in 37 seconds and were the 72nd Tanga member to solve it. <-- even with a trip through Google!
Got it easily - just had to work out spelling and punctuation. I was the 666th person to answer... is that bad? *evil grin*
Sheez - 5 minutes to get the right punctuation. :-\
abbreviations and punctuation are my nemesis.
674th.
ack.
[50] Great Puzzle Mutilated. No reason to feel heat. The only way to avoid trying to guess popular opinion is to do a puzzle without the possible need for abbreviation or punctuation. I don't hear anyone giving you heat. They are just complaining that they didn't match the answer the first time.
I would have had it in 0 seconds if an answer wasn't necessary....!
[50] I second Doug. If you had not formulated the answer so as not to require punctuation, you would probably get some complaints from people who had tried that first.
Perhaps it's possible to set a standard for using punctuation, but it's hard to say if everyone will be on board. Personally, I'd hate to see doing away with apostrophes in possessives and contractions, but I'm not very concerned about how to handle periods for abbreviations.
Dude, seriously... I was writing the word out. Come on!
I put the answer in google, and got the right spelling on the first link.
[56] Is a standard really necessary for this one, when it was originally punctuated a certain way?
[50]
I think you did the right thing (even though I spent time googling the original abbreviation/punctuation). Don't take the criticisms to heart.
This was a good first published puzzle! (and even good if it wasn't a first time published puzzle :-) )
WT???? I can't get it to take!!!
THe answer seemed to be wha thte proper spelling and punctuation shoudl be. However the original that the answer came from has it punctuated differently.
