You solved this puzzle in 5 minutes and 14 seconds and were the 3rd Tanga member to solve it. You earned 108 points for solving this.

My best ever position! I like these puzzles (and not just because I did it fast) :-)

14th. Would've been in the top 10, but after filling in the grid on paper I was looking at the wrong square for the answer.

15th. I feel like such an idiot. I was doing it crossword style (using the words as clues) rather than using the words I was given. BTW I've never heard the answer word before.

First time attempting a puzzle in a while. Nifty puzzle! I love the little extra clue that I can't talk about without over-salting. :-)

99th! Just under the wire! I wish I would have started this one sooner. I had no clue how to get going at first, but once you stare at it a bit, it all falls into place eventually. Nice puzzle as always Doc!

  9. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Feb 07, 2008 07:48 PM

Um.... I got the pink box letters, but they don't mean anything to me. Any salt?

  10. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Feb 07, 2008 07:49 PM

    NM. That WAS the answer.
Now I have to look up what it means! LOL!

56th... I'd have been higher but my router decided to shut down while I was doing the puzzle. took me a few minutes to get that sorted out before I could enter the answer. Fun puzzle... thanks.

  12. FileRadishBetaPrime on Feb 07, 2008 07:59 PM

Shoot... started 30 min late and ended up as 116.

    Great puzzle as always Murdoctor.

Fun, but tricky for those with no working printer. :p

Neverending Cornucopia of Puzzle Goodness, thy name is Murdoctor.

  16. FileRocketAveOscuro on Feb 07, 2008 09:31 PM

so I filled every square and got the right answer, but instead of "cry" I got the model of a mid-size SUV made by honda. Anyone else get the same?

  17. FileRocketAveOscuro on Feb 07, 2008 09:33 PM

    NM I got it

  18. BatsmallSailboatAshe2000 on Feb 07, 2008 10:36 PM

Very well crafted Murdoctor, odd answer, but nice puzzle :)

  19. PirateleadfootPumpkinleadfoot on Feb 08, 2008 04:37 AM

    Yeah! What [15] said!!!

I started out frustrated, doing the same as [3] - once I figured out that was wrong, all else fell into place nicely!

    :-)

learned a new word. yea, Tanga and Murdoctor.

  22. FilePancakestempus42 on Feb 08, 2008 06:18 AM

Did you invent this type of puzzle? I haven't seen it before, and I thought it was very clever and fun. Not too easy, not too hard.

  23. FileTomatoMurdoctor on Feb 08, 2008 06:53 AM

[18] Yeah, I wasn't too thrilled with the answer word myself. Sometimes, I craft a puzzle around a particular answer word that I want to end up with... other times, I have a particular theme or mechanism, and choose an answer word from within that scope (like I did with my last published puzzle)... and still other times -- like in this case -- I have a way I want the puzzle to work, and somehow try to extract an answer word at the end. I did the puzzle grid first, choosing the words as I filled it in... and only at the very end did I go through to determine what the answer word might be. In cases like that, the answer word tends to be more "clunky", though there are the wonderful occasions that it all falls together with a nice answer word that fits the theme of the puzzle.

[22] Nope. My sweetie MedCheryl bought me a puzzle book recently, and I saw this type of puzzle in it... so I decided to create my own to use here on Tanga. The one in the book was a 17x17 grid -- more words and more challenging to fill in. That book has actually inspired a few of my recent puzzles, all of which have been well-received... so you have her to thank as well.

First timer, here. I thought the pink boxes were "stoppers" like in a standard crossword.
    Figured it out. Yay.

  25. Thunk_logo_colorPotatofachanlahd on Feb 08, 2008 07:22 AM

    Fun puzzle...AND I learned a new word today...even better!

  26. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 08, 2008 07:31 AM

[23] Ooooo, Murdoctor, don't get mad at me or anything...

    ... but I found SPECTRUM.

It did take a while, though, if that's any consolation :) And FWIW, two of those letters are "starting" letters, so I wouldn't have used it anyway.

-Dave, who had a perfectly good time with the answer as written.

  27. FilePepperChupper on Feb 08, 2008 07:49 AM

[24] I had the same problem starting out, but figured it out quickly. Simple and fun puzzle! Five stars, though I almost docked it one for the answer word.

  28. FileGrapesMarek21 on Feb 08, 2008 08:21 AM

enjoyed this one. Had fun filling it in, heh.

  29. FileTomatoMurdoctor on Feb 08, 2008 08:53 AM

[26] Exactly... I found several other words (using either a top-down or a left-right approach), but I didn't want to use any of the letters in the numbered boxes, so that limited my options. I settled on the one I used because I was able to think of a somewhat capricious clue to include in the puzzle text.

  30. FileTomatoMurdoctor on Feb 08, 2008 09:25 AM

For anyone struggling, it may help to start with the numbered corner boxes, since the directions the words can go are limited, and you can narrow down possibilities based on the overlapping words/letters from the other starting points.

  31. FilePepperpepperhead on Feb 08, 2008 02:25 PM

    nice liked it

  32. FileDuckiedavey3 on Feb 08, 2008 05:08 PM

Wow ... really nice puzzle! I was almost scared off cause it looked complex, but thought I'd give it a try when I saw the author's name. Well done Murdoctor!

  33. FilePepperdajagr on Apr 28, 2008 12:17 PM

Oy. I made this _much_ harder than it should have been by not realizing that the words all went in a straight line.
