As I put in the Notes field with my submission of this puzzle: "I realize this steps out of the usual "rebus" style of Cryptopix, but still somewhat fits the definition of having multiple pictures and cluing a phrase. And it certainly couldn't be a One Word Wonder..."
Sometimes, you have to break from the norm and look for some new things to try.
ugh... that was very frustrating... at least it was over after five minutes or so. But, I can appreciate the "out of the box" thinking. "Getting the puzzle" and "getting the answer" can be different sides of the same road apple.
Wow... I'm so so lost.... I always solve the cryptopix but never the 1WW and it sounds like this is sort of a mixture and I can't get it for the life of me... if there isn't anymore good salt could someone TG me the answer???? Please!
I waited to comment on this puzzle until I'd had time to mull it over. It is certainly a clever puzzle. But it is NOT a cryptopix -- it doesn't match Tanga's description of a cryptopix, and it doesn't work the way all previous cryptopixes have worked. Please understand, I'm not against innovation. But innovation can encounter problems.
The major problem with this puzzle is that it does not have an absolute, unique answer. As others have pointed out, there were 2-word, 3-word, and 6-word answers to the puzzle that were equally as good and legitimate as the composer's answer. That ambiguity is a serious flaw.
Perhaps we need a new puzzle type -- a multiword wonder. And to prevent solver frustration, the number of words in the answer should be given.
[52] I agree with your first paragraph. See my comment [37] above.
Since it certainly couldn't be a One Word Wonder, I took at shot with it as a Cryptopix. I was actually surprised it was chosen, and I'm glad it was. It caused a bit of a stir, but it made people think and seemed to satisfy a large percentage of the solvers with the "aha" value.
[53] Or this could have been used as a hard one-word-wonder. There would still be a few possible answers, like Rodgers, Hammerstein, Coltrane, etc. But if you add the symbol for female (the way you added the male symbol to Mars in a past cryptopix), that would narrow it down to Andrews, Julie, Maria.
And still, the solver would have experienced the "Aha!" moment.
You are a freaking genius!!, you solved this puzzle.
