do we need to be able to tell what states those plates are from? if so, I'm dead in the water -- I can't see them well enough!

  2. FilePancakesepaz on Mar 02, 2008 07:09 PM

    [1] ditto

  3. FileLemonnysemt on Mar 02, 2008 07:12 PM

    Hrmmm... not seein' it!

  4. FileAcescarver on Mar 02, 2008 07:13 PM

    Wow. Got a Hard OWW.

  5. FileAcescarver on Mar 02, 2008 07:14 PM

you got to look closely at the plates and apply tanga numbers to the states.

I'm a poet and my feet show it. They're Longfellows.

  6. NamyminiSailboatnamyzarc on Mar 02, 2008 07:15 PM

[1].. You don't have to be able to read...just identify colors and patterns...

  7. FileSailboatyelowflower on Mar 02, 2008 07:15 PM

    [4] a starting point?

  8. FilePepperdajagr on Mar 02, 2008 07:15 PM

Wow. That was a lot of chasing.

  9. FileSailboatyelowflower on Mar 02, 2008 07:20 PM

patterns? I see some objects, but not really any patterns

  10. FileAcescarver on Mar 02, 2008 07:22 PM

This is a starting point for you that are lost: http://www.worldlicenseplates.com/world/NA_USAX.html

  11. FileTomatoRagspur on Mar 02, 2008 07:26 PM

This one is better for a quick look. Some aren't on there, but it should cut the time down as they are the same size:

  12. FileGarlick1w1 on Mar 02, 2008 07:27 PM

A bit hard for us out of towners....

  13. NamyminiSailboatnamyzarc on Mar 02, 2008 07:28 PM

[9] sorry, by "patterns", I mean, you don't have to read what's on the license plates to know what state they're from... Just look at the colors and compare with these great links..

  14. AvatarDuckiesteph_frolin on Mar 02, 2008 07:29 PM

[8] indeed a lot of referencing and some that are very similar to others. I had 3 wrong and as able to connectit together to see what I was looking for. Fun, but would recommend larger images next time.

  15. FilePepperChupper on Mar 02, 2008 07:29 PM

this isn't a puzzle, this is busywork.

  16. FileCheeseburgerQurqirishDragon on Mar 02, 2008 07:30 PM

I found http://daz.pl8.com helped with descriptive terms.

  17. FilePotatorevchewie on Mar 02, 2008 07:31 PM

W00t! First time I've ever gotten all four in the top 100!

This one worked well for me. No hunting back and forth and they're all big enough to see. The only downside was that I couldn't find *all* the plates used in the puzzle on this site. But there were only a couple missing, enough were there to solve it.

  18. FileDuckieescKey on Mar 02, 2008 07:36 PM

There are three of them I haven't been able to locate anywhere. Anyone wanna help me with them?

EDIT: Nevermind. I found it on one of the additional links added. Thanks!!

  19. Bunny91Garlicheatherlouwho on Mar 02, 2008 07:33 PM

    [17] Congrats!

  20. FileSailboatsteve59 on Mar 02, 2008 07:34 PM

    [18] which ones?

  21. FilePumpkinJohn on Mar 02, 2008 07:47 PM

I never did find 3BROS or 5WEET, but finally just decided "heck with it, maybe I have enough to go for a solve"

  22. FileEggplantsuigeneris on Mar 02, 2008 07:47 PM

one of those is REALLY hard to find if you cant read the lake at the bottom. Gotta love those special interest group plates

  23. FilePepperpepperhead on Mar 02, 2008 07:47 PM

    It was fun, good one

  24. FilePeachSquirlwfleas on Mar 02, 2008 07:50 PM

I have three I cannot find

  25. FilePeppercyncat on Mar 02, 2008 07:50 PM

    [17] Congrats!

  26. FilePotatorevchewie on Mar 02, 2008 07:53 PM

    Overall, really good puzzle, trevelyan!

That said, it's a bit frustrating trying to find alternate plates, especially uncommon ones. Specifically, 5WEET. I was only able to find that particular plate when backsolving after I knew what state it had to be. I've *never* seen that plate design and I *live* in that state!

    edit: Thanks, [19] and [25]!

  27. FileEggplantsuigeneris on Mar 02, 2008 07:52 PM

Darn. This was the only puzzle I missed bonus points on tonight

  28. FileSailboatyelowflower on Mar 02, 2008 07:52 PM

    3bros?
have solved with the rest of them, but would like to know just where THAT one comes from.
    thanks

  29. FilePumpkinBigSlick on Mar 02, 2008 07:54 PM

[22] No you don't gotta love 'em! Using that plate instead of the common one for that state (as well as the covered wagon plate) is simply pointless. That is just making the "puzzle" unnecessarily more difficult for no good reason.

  30. FileDuckiedavey3 on Mar 02, 2008 07:54 PM

Wow ... that was kind of tedious. I found the same site as [10] and thought it was the most useful.

  31. FileSailboatyelowflower on Mar 02, 2008 07:55 PM

[27] me too and all because of alternate plate?
    sigh

  32. FilePumpkinBigSlick on Mar 02, 2008 07:55 PM

[28] The usual plate for that state shows the Douglas Fir on it. The wagon plate makes sense now that I know where it comes from, but it's still way too obscure!

  33. FilePumpkinBigSlick on Mar 02, 2008 07:56 PM

    [31] Me 3

  34. FilePotatorevchewie on Mar 02, 2008 07:56 PM

    [28] TG sent

  35. FilePumpkinJohn on Mar 02, 2008 07:58 PM

    [21] Found them finally!

5WEET is a special issue "Arts Council" edition, not the normal plate.

3BROS is a commemorative edition only available from 1995-1998, not the current plate.

  36. FilePeachSquirlwfleas on Mar 02, 2008 08:00 PM

    I'm missing 3Bro's & 9Ball...

  37. FilePeachSquirlwfleas on Mar 02, 2008 08:03 PM

    OOps...just 9Ball

  38. Picture-303Pumpkingodard on Mar 02, 2008 08:42 PM

9Ball is actually a current plate apparently, and not anything special. That's probably why it's so hard to find.

The number 9 should help you with the length of the state name a little bit.

  39. FilePumpkinBigSlick on Mar 02, 2008 09:10 PM

[37] I didn't find that one either in several different lists. Use Chewie's link in [17] - it's in there.

  40. FilePumpkinJohn on Mar 02, 2008 09:42 PM

I think the 9BALL is just hard to notice, because the words are covering up something distinctive you would normally be able to see.

  41. Ag1Potatojeep on Mar 02, 2008 10:11 PM

Pshew... I couldn't find them all, but the first 4 and last 4 were enough to let me guess.

  42. Avatar_profileBananatrevelyan on Mar 03, 2008 06:18 AM

A hint on 5WEET if anyon is still stuck. Had I used the actualy plate it would be pure white, no design.

  43. FilePotatorevchewie on Mar 03, 2008 09:28 AM

[42] Good point. Our plates *are* on the boring side. Unless, of course, you get one of the alternate plates. Which brings us back full circle to what I said in [26], which I now retract. It probably would've been at least as frustrating trying to figure out a blank white plate as it was to find the alternate that was used.

I stick by my statement that it was a good, fun puzzle though. :-P

  44. Avatar_profileBananatrevelyan on Mar 03, 2008 09:57 AM

[43] The other thing that stinks is when you make these. I made it huge on Photoshop. But when they publish it you cant read it. I tried to pick distinctive plates that had hints on them. Like that one has the name of a lake in your state and other have slogans about the state. Ill have to remember they scale them down so text is harder to read. And make text and images much larger to see when it gets scaled.

  45. BarrerahelmSailboatElGrande on Mar 03, 2008 03:06 PM

Too much work if you have to do research. Not worth the trouble.

  46. FileBananagrant5 on Mar 03, 2008 04:35 PM

Not a bad puzzle, but I'm not sure why they considered it a Hard. It was time consuming to the point of frustration (I realize it wouldn't have been had the image turned out as you hoped), but the solve method was standard Tanga.

  47. Avatar_profilePearnickd916 on Mar 03, 2008 04:53 PM

Were 2 of the plates inspired by Lost and Prison Break?

  48. Avatar_profileBananatrevelyan on Mar 03, 2008 07:55 PM

    [47] Lol yes
