do we need to be able to tell what states those plates are from? if so, I'm dead in the water -- I can't see them well enough!
[1] ditto
Hrmmm... not seein' it!
Wow. Got a Hard OWW.
you got to look closely at the plates and apply tanga numbers to the states.
I'm a poet and my feet show it. They're Longfellows.
[1].. You don't have to be able to read...just identify colors and patterns...
[4] a starting point?
Wow. That was a lot of chasing.
patterns? I see some objects, but not really any patterns
This is a starting point for you that are lost: http://www.worldlicenseplates.com/world/NA_USAX.html
This one is better for a quick look. Some aren't on there, but it should cut the time down as they are the same size:

A bit hard for us out of towners....
[9] sorry, by "patterns", I mean, you don't have to read what's on the license plates to know what state they're from... Just look at the colors and compare with these great links..
[8] indeed a lot of referencing and some that are very similar to others. I had 3 wrong and as able to connectit together to see what I was looking for. Fun, but would recommend larger images next time.
this isn't a puzzle, this is busywork.
I found http://daz.pl8.com helped with descriptive terms.
W00t! First time I've ever gotten all four in the top 100!
This one worked well for me. No hunting back and forth and they're all big enough to see. The only downside was that I couldn't find *all* the plates used in the puzzle on this site. But there were only a couple missing, enough were there to solve it.

There are three of them I haven't been able to locate anywhere. Anyone wanna help me with them?
EDIT: Nevermind. I found it on one of the additional links added. Thanks!!
[17] Congrats!
[18] which ones?
I never did find 3BROS or 5WEET, but finally just decided "heck with it, maybe I have enough to go for a solve"
one of those is REALLY hard to find if you cant read the lake at the bottom. Gotta love those special interest group plates
It was fun, good one
I have three I cannot find
[17] Congrats!
Overall, really good puzzle, trevelyan!
That said, it's a bit frustrating trying to find alternate plates, especially uncommon ones. Specifically, 5WEET. I was only able to find that particular plate when backsolving after I knew what state it had to be. I've *never* seen that plate design and I *live* in that state!
edit: Thanks, [19] and [25]!
Darn. This was the only puzzle I missed bonus points on tonight
3bros?
have solved with the rest of them, but would like to know just where THAT one comes from.
thanks
[22] No you don't gotta love 'em! Using that plate instead of the common one for that state (as well as the covered wagon plate) is simply pointless. That is just making the "puzzle" unnecessarily more difficult for no good reason.
Wow ... that was kind of tedious. I found the same site as [10] and thought it was the most useful.
[27] me too and all because of alternate plate?
sigh
[28] The usual plate for that state shows the Douglas Fir on it. The wagon plate makes sense now that I know where it comes from, but it's still way too obscure!
[31] Me 3
[28] TG sent
[21] Found them finally!
5WEET is a special issue "Arts Council" edition, not the normal plate.
3BROS is a commemorative edition only available from 1995-1998, not the current plate.
I'm missing 3Bro's & 9Ball...
OOps...just 9Ball
9Ball is actually a current plate apparently, and not anything special. That's probably why it's so hard to find.
The number 9 should help you with the length of the state name a little bit.
[37] I didn't find that one either in several different lists. Use Chewie's link in [17] - it's in there.
I think the 9BALL is just hard to notice, because the words are covering up something distinctive you would normally be able to see.
Pshew... I couldn't find them all, but the first 4 and last 4 were enough to let me guess.
A hint on 5WEET if anyon is still stuck. Had I used the actualy plate it would be pure white, no design.
[42] Good point. Our plates *are* on the boring side. Unless, of course, you get one of the alternate plates. Which brings us back full circle to what I said in [26], which I now retract. It probably would've been at least as frustrating trying to figure out a blank white plate as it was to find the alternate that was used.
I stick by my statement that it was a good, fun puzzle though. :-P
[43] The other thing that stinks is when you make these. I made it huge on Photoshop. But when they publish it you cant read it. I tried to pick distinctive plates that had hints on them. Like that one has the name of a lake in your state and other have slogans about the state. Ill have to remember they scale them down so text is harder to read. And make text and images much larger to see when it gets scaled.
Too much work if you have to do research. Not worth the trouble.
Not a bad puzzle, but I'm not sure why they considered it a Hard. It was time consuming to the point of frustration (I realize it wouldn't have been had the image turned out as you hoped), but the solve method was standard Tanga.
Were 2 of the plates inspired by Lost and Prison Break?
[47] Lol yes
