I have said this for many, many years. Have never seen the reference to it as explained in the solution. Although I think I heard it once on Sesame Street.
No one seems to be upset by mixing phonetics and spelling but me, but in what way does the fifth picture make what it is supposed to? You have to spell it out (unlike the rest) then switch back to pronunciation. (Though I offer no better method for clueing that word. :-( )
[6][7] The author may be quoting B.B., but there are several much older references on this page.
[8] that link is very VERY salty.
I guess i dont see what you are complaining about. 5 of the 8 words in the answer are clued by something that isnt spelled the way it should be. "t" + "what he second picture is" = "the word we are looking for" How is that nay different than the rest of the puzzle, or any other crypto for that matter?

I've got everything but the 2nd word.
edit: NM - wasn't thinking the right way with 2nd word, I stopped at 'states'.

[3] thanks for the nudge. I was working with "states" for that one, but since you said it, I knew the word was wrong.

If it isn't apparent, the link in [8] will spoil the solution.
