Does anyone know what the first picture is supposed to be?

  2. Donimo_pirate_beatlesEggDonimo on Mon Aug 18, 2008 09:17 AM

I'm afraid that's the $64,000 question. (Salt, but not for epaz.)

  3. FilePancakeshatemachine on Mon Aug 18, 2008 09:24 AM

[1] The only one I'm 100% sure of is the last...

  4. FileClockJewelia on Mon Aug 18, 2008 09:17 AM

[1] No . . . and I can't think of anything it could be that would have an "S" to take away!

  5. FileEggmnemonica on Mon Aug 18, 2008 09:20 AM

Found it by trying everything in a list. Apparently she is scowling.

  6. FilePancakesepaz on Mon Aug 18, 2008 09:22 AM

[5] Thank you! (I skipped that one!)

  7. FilePancakesepaz on Mon Aug 18, 2008 09:29 AM

PS- That's a specific type of soup (that you have to pronounce the Anglo/American way).

  8. FileClockJewelia on Mon Aug 18, 2008 09:29 AM

    [5] Thank you!

  9. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on Mon Aug 18, 2008 09:43 AM

    [5] Thanks, that's what I needed.
[7] Thank you. Never heard of it, but I figured out what it should be from the last pic and back-googled to make sure.

BTW, if you get all the parts and google them together, it will provide the answer word, even though it's not spelled the same as the parts.

I just can't come up with the soup

  11. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:04 AM

[10] I'm in the same place as you are.

  12. FilePancakestempus42 on Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:07 AM

[11] Me too. But then I can't come up with clearly definitive answers for the 1st or 2nd pictures either. (Monday-morning stupidity is lasting particularly long today...) Even though the answer for the first picture was more or less given, I can't figure out if it's "cowling" or just "cowl". Nothing seems to fit...

  13. FilePeppercyncat on Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:09 AM

[10],[11] It's popular in Ho Chi Minh City.

  14. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:15 AM

    [13] THAT'S what I needed.

I feel like such a Bozo today. Scary isn't it?

  15. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:16 AM

If you get the letters for the last pic, think what common word that is the end of. Then think what sound should go in front of it. Google that for the name of the soup.

  16. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:18 AM

[12] It's the noun not the action verb for the expression.

  17. FileClockmust67 on Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:18 AM

    [13]That got it. Thanks

  18. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:20 AM

I think the picture of the soup without any other clue as to the culture, name, type, etc, is just a bit sadistic.

  19. FilePancakestempus42 on Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:55 AM

Thanks for the help, once again, soccer_ref. :)

On a completely non-puzzle-related note, does anyone but me ever wonder about the background on some of the pictures used in the puzzles? That first picture has me completely entranced/befuddled. Those girls look like they must be bridesmaids. What exactly happened to make that girl look that way right at that moment? Where was this picture found? Did the puzzlemaker know these girls? Just pointless musing.....

  20. FileSailboatdagibbs on Mon Aug 18, 2008 11:08 AM

Having eaten the relevant soup, I found it quite clear from the image. Especially give-away was the side-dish with bean sprouts and other stuff to throw in.

But the first picture? No clue.

  21. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Mon Aug 18, 2008 11:45 AM

[19] Along those lines - who would let their baby out in what looks to be a scull constructed of PVC - without a life vest?

  22. SouthparkPepperTahnan on Mon Aug 18, 2008 03:05 PM

The strained picture for "scowl" (why not just use http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/music/cowl460.jpg , say?), the strained picture for the last syllable, and the uncommon nature of the word, all make this a subpar puzzle, IMHO.

  23. Istock_000000610512smallPeachrobgraham on Mon Aug 18, 2008 07:17 PM

[14] Thanks, that turned the whole thing on for me

  24. Img_0189Egggst on Mon Aug 18, 2008 07:50 PM

Thanks for the various good hints.

  25. 1981709Sailboatjgf on Mon Aug 18, 2008 08:21 PM

Picture is making me hungry, especially after all the work it took to solve the puzzle. Couldn't done it without the salt on picture 1.

I know picture 3 because there a few cheap Vietnamese places in Berkeley, and being a grad student, you eat what there is. It's a good meal for a good price, especially on a cold winter's day. But I can see how it can be hard to decode without clues.

  26. Panda-flyGarlicpandapal on Tue Aug 19, 2008 11:10 AM

Never heard of the answer. Never heard of the soup, either!

  27. Thumbs_up_guyBananasamisgr8 on Tue Aug 19, 2008 05:27 PM

[20] That was my first impression of the soup as well. That was the first picture I able to figure out.

  28. AvatarSailboatjjcool on Tue Aug 19, 2008 07:25 PM

    so whats the answer?
