I got where four of the medals are from, but I cannot find anything sensible with either the cities or countries.
[2] That's about where I am now, too.

I tanga-ed this in almost every way possible except the right way. figures.
note to solvers: some medals look like they are different materials than they are. Use the pedistals to tell which are which. I thought, for example, the lower-right medal was silver, and that messed me up.
I couldn't find one site with all the medals and ended up having to do waay too much research. Turns out there IS one site where you can find them all together. Unfortunately, it isn't among the websites that come up when you search for "olympic medal".
I would recommend searching for the official site of the upcoming games.
[5] and [6] THANKS!
I at first thought my answer was wrong, but I tried it anyway and was pleasantly surprised. Learn something new every day!
If you search for "Olympic Medals" (with the plural) you'll find a complete list near the top of the search (using google that is).
I just clicked on Hint #1 and got this:
"The answer isn't actually a word (not multiple words)"
What is that supposed to mean? It's a hard one word wonder but it's not a word?
[9] sorry that was the first incarnation.
After suggestions from moderator I changed the puzzle. I'll edit the hints
the answer is one word.
