For anyone who is colorblind or is having trouble distinguishing the numbers and/or colors of the stars, they are:
    1st row: Red 1,2,2,3,3,3,4,4
    2nd row: Blue 11,2,3,2,3,4,5,6
    3rd row: Red 4,4,5,1,5,6,7,7
    4th row: Blue 7,3,2,11,5,7,6,10
    5th row: Red 2,3,3,5,6,1,3,2
    6th row: Blue 3,3,6,7,4,10,10,6
    7th row: Red 1,5,4,5,7,8,8,8
    8th row: Blue 8,1,6,8,12,3,5,19

NOTE: The above numbers have been editted for correction from the ones shown above in the stars. Please use these numbers!

EDIT: THE NUMBERS HAVE BEEN CORRECTED ON THE PICTURE AND THE CORRECTED PICTURE HAS BEEN UPLOADED. THE PUZZLE SHOULD NOW BE CORRECT IN BOTH THE PICTURE AND THIS COMMENT.

    Nice puzzle

  3. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 07:14 PM

    [2] Thank you!

  4. FileClockJewelia on May 30, 2008 07:23 PM

I love the theme tonight, but I must admit that at my age, both OWWs feel like vision tests--and I'm failing this one!

  5. FileTomatotlmitch7 on May 30, 2008 07:24 PM

[4] Hear ya there, what a bad eye test

  6. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on May 30, 2008 07:25 PM

[4] Everything is listed out in the first comment (I know what you mean about being optically challenged when it comes to these things!)

  7. FilePepperslog on May 30, 2008 07:31 PM

    Huh?

  8. FileDuckienrkii on May 30, 2008 07:32 PM

I am so lost on this one.

  9. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 07:33 PM

[7][8] Hmmmm...why might there be different color stars??

  10. FileGarlicBlueDevilDucky on May 30, 2008 07:34 PM

[9] To match the colors of our flag??

  11. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 07:35 PM

[9] Well, that of course, but maybe another reason too. Maybe the numbers in the different colors are used differently. :D

  12. FilePancakesMysticalmelody on May 30, 2008 07:39 PM

Do we need to put the wars in the right order or should this order work to reach the answer?

  13. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 07:39 PM

[12] The order they're in is what you want.

  14. FileClockJewelia on May 30, 2008 07:39 PM

[11] So are the blue ones bass-ackwards?

  15. FileCheeseburgerQurqirishDragon on May 30, 2008 07:40 PM

[11] unfortunately I haven't found out a way to use either type of numbers (anything I tried didn't work for either type)

  16. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on May 30, 2008 07:41 PM

[14] Perhaps you don't use them exactly the same way.

  17. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 07:40 PM

[14] Nope. But remember...the flag is red, white AND blue.

  18. FileClockJewelia on May 30, 2008 07:43 PM

So how come there are no white stars?

Can you sense my confusion? ;-)

  19. FilePepperslog on May 30, 2008 07:47 PM

I can only get the top half of the stars to work. (Rows 1-4)

EDIT: Post and solve strikes again, but I think there are some typos.

  20. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 07:45 PM

[18] But the wars are white (with an outline)....

  21. Donimo_pirate_beatlesTomatoDonimo on May 30, 2008 07:46 PM

Am I the only one that thinks some numbers are off? These work better for me:
    1st row: Red 1,2,2,3,3,3,4,4
    2nd row: Blue 11,2,3,2,3,4,5,6
    3rd row: Red 4,4,5,1,5,6,7,7
    4th row: Blue 7,3,2,11,5,7,6,10
    5th row: Red 2,3,|3|,5,6,1,3,2
    6th row: Blue 3,3,6,7,4,10,10,6
    7th row: Red 1,5,|4|,5,|7|,8,8,|8|
    8th row: Blue |8|,1,6,8,12,3,5,19

  22. FileClockJewelia on May 30, 2008 07:47 PM

[19] How'd you do that? I couldn't get Row 4 to work because there aren't enough letters in "Vietnam War."

  23. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 07:47 PM

[19] If you're using the right one to do the right job, they should all work. Notice how the red numbers don't go as high as the blue numbers?

  24. FilePepperslog on May 30, 2008 07:47 PM

[22] The red and blue stars need to be paired up.

  25. FileClockJewelia on May 30, 2008 07:49 PM

[20] If that was supposed to nudge me out of my state of confusion, you're going to need a much bigger block of salt and you will probably need to whack me upside the head with it!

  26. Phi3CornPhilana on May 30, 2008 07:51 PM

[21] I got it with your numbers. Thanks!

  27. FilePepperVerve640 on May 30, 2008 07:51 PM

[21] - Thanks, works fine with those...

  28. FileEggRPardoe on May 30, 2008 07:51 PM

    [23][24] taken together should help....

  29. FileCheeseburgerHrothgar24 on May 30, 2008 07:51 PM

[21] Thanks. Had the solve method, but got garbled results without your corrections.

  30. FilePancakesCWarrior on May 30, 2008 07:53 PM

I had no idea there were even numbers in the stars until reading [1].

  31. FilePepperslog on May 30, 2008 07:53 PM

[25] The blue stars are Tanga numbers.

  32. FileClockJewelia on May 30, 2008 07:55 PM

[24] Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  33. FilePancakesMysticalmelody on May 30, 2008 07:58 PM

I thought of the correct method right off the bat but dismissed it immediately when I saw that the last number in the last red row was 9. I should have tested it anyway I suppose. I got halfway through before I got it.

  34. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 08:46 PM

[21] I don't know how this happened. I checked and double check the numbers before this was submitted. And yet, you are correct...some numbers ARE incorrect on the puzzle. :(

EDIT: All numbers have now been corrected on the picture and in [1] also.

  35. FileEggGamesX4 on May 30, 2008 08:00 PM

yes, thank you [21], I got the first part right away and could make no sense of the next part. Tried guessing all kinds of stuff until you corrected.

  36. FileEggGamesX4 on May 30, 2008 08:02 PM

Got dizzy getting through this one.

  37. FileCheeseburgerQurqirishDragon on May 30, 2008 08:02 PM

[24] Thanks! that got it for me.

And yes, [21]'s numbers make more sense. That last red 9 in particular caused me to miss the method [24] suggested.

  38. Donimo_pirate_beatlesTomatoDonimo on May 30, 2008 08:03 PM

[34] Happens to the best of us. :) But I should get double points for solving a double puzzle. :)

[33] The 9 IS nasty, but luckily I tried the right method and was able to get the answer from the first half.

What I wonder is why the first 10 solvers didn't say anything?

  39. FileDuckienrkii on May 30, 2008 08:02 PM

[33] thanks - pointing out that 9 is what did it for me!

  40. Chain_bunnyEggIrrenarzt on May 30, 2008 08:03 PM

I don't even see where to start on this one. Got all the other puzzles.

  41. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 08:07 PM

[40] Take the red and blue stars as a set.
One tells you which war to use, the other is a tanga number.

  42. FileRaspberrydsmeyer on May 30, 2008 08:10 PM

Replace comment one with comment 21. I hope the moderators are up soon.

  43. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 08:14 PM

[42] No need...the numbers in [1] have been corrected.

  44. FileEggRPardoe on May 30, 2008 08:16 PM

[38] - I didn't comment as I guessed it with just the first few words revealed and remembering there was a theme to all the puzzles.

Didn't realize there were errors later as I didn't solve the whole thing.

  45. Donimo_pirate_beatlesTomatoDonimo on May 30, 2008 08:23 PM

    [44] That's logical. I guess you're a bolder solver than me

  46. FileEggRPardoe on May 30, 2008 08:26 PM

I do that all the time...if I think I have an inkling of the solution, I will make guesses.

Fortunately, all that counts here is the answer. We don't need to show our work. (One advantage of being out of school!)

  47. Chain_bunnyEggIrrenarzt on May 30, 2008 08:37 PM

[41] Thanks that was what I needed. And the numbers from [21]. And one other thing that may be too salty so I'll leave it out :)

  48. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 08:42 PM

OK, as I noted in my edit on [1], I have fixed the problematic numbers on the picture and in the comment. Everything should be right now.

  49. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 30, 2008 08:43 PM

[44] I can see how you could guess from the first 4 words (well, 2 if you're really a risk taker) if you knew the night's theme.

  50. FilePumpkinBigSlick on May 31, 2008 12:13 AM

Thanks to all the salt here, this wasn't all that hard. Even got a few bonus points coming here this late.

Also, thanks to scoutmom and soccer_ref for 4 great puzzles tonight!

  51. Avatar_profileAppletinywarriorette on May 31, 2008 05:10 AM

I am fairly certain I have the right answer, but it is not taking it.

Post and remember this is OWW.

    Nice puzzle soccer-ref.

  52. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on May 31, 2008 06:03 AM

[50][51] Thank you from myself and Scoutmom. We really enjoyed presenting the set of puzzles tonight. Funny thing is, we thought THIS would be the easy puzzle and the other would be the hard puzzle. LOL

  53. FileCarrotengles on Mar 28, 2012 02:44 PM

Man, those numbers on the stars are small!
    [41] Helps for the solve.
