I always wondered which of the dual interpretations of this saying was the intended one. Is it "there is no such thing as ___ ___," or "the absence of ___ is a ___ sign"? I guess it's one of those glass half empty/half full kind of things.
[14] Surely the latter. Googling the exact phrase led me to a site which gave what it said was the earliest version of the saying. That version, using your first interpretation, gives a quite different meaning!
