Anyone notice a trend toward very, very helpful comments lately? Also happening on Featured puzzles, unfortunately (IMO).
[1] was salt enough for me. Yes, [5], I would prefer if comments, at least very early comments, were unsalted.

Originally the first pic was supposed to be a cutting board. The moderator change it to a piece of wood. Sorry for the change, but I couldn't do anything about it. I don't know what about a gnarled piece of wood makes this puzzle easier to solve.
