interesting. I like a couple of them. I think a couple are ok. and I've never heard of a couple of them. Not sure how to salt this so I'll hold off for now.
Actually, I just tried creating an animated puzzle because somewhere on the site I read that you can create animated puzzles. Just trying to do it. Now that I figured out how to animate frames, I just need some ideas on how to make the animation a more significant part of the puzzle.
And for the record, I don't think this could have been a single frame puzzle. The artwork would have been way to small to use the artwork as presented here. I was thinking this would alleviate the "can't read the small clue" blues.
Only 54 solves in 2 1/2 hours? Guess this one didn't go over so well ... You could say this puzzle is a total failure, an abysmal disaster, or a colossal mistake.
I have to agree that I don't think the animation adds anything. (Yes, it adds time. But that time isn't in fact part of the puzzle.)
I did finally solve it, just now. (56th.) The problem was that I had been overwhelmed with all of the irrelevant information; it wasn't immediately clear to me what was relevant about each cover. (Image? Numbers? First letters? Something else?) And since I couldn't look at all six at once, it made it that much harder for me to find the common element. ("This Boyz II Men cover has a number on it...crud, did the Phish album?")
I mean, kudos to CWarrior for trying something different; I'm just not really sure it worked.
I do not think this was a complete failure as [10] put it.. actually thought it was quite clever and innovative... and it worked. However, I do think it could have been done without animation and still had clear enough pictures. You are given 500x500 to split 6 ways. Each one of those covers has enough around the edges that could be cropped without cutting the integrity of the image... allowing you to keep the important part bigger as you size down. Just my 2 cents.
I liked this one. True, the animation is a bit misleading, as the time factor is not really a factor. But it would have been pretty difficult to try to crop all the album covers down to 500x500 without doing so much cropping that it made the puzzle trivial (by cropping down to the relevant bits.) I enjoyed it. good work!
Thanks for all of the encouraging and nice comments ... I wasn't fishing for it (but I certainly appreciate it!), but was trying to leave salt in [10] ...
About 14 hours in and still got bonus points... thank you [10] your comments helped and now that I see the solve method it is rather neat! It was hard to narrow down what we needed to pull from each of the covers
[20] You think I'm trying to look clever? Look, I waited 12 hours before posting the uber-salt so as to not ruin this new puzzle variant (even if I didn't care for it).
Leaving the solution for all to see is no one's fault but yours. I think its just plain sloppy, and I point it out publicly to prevent other puzzle-makers from making the same mistake in the future.
It's not my fault. This site does not consistently obfuscate filenames. It should. It even tries to do it. Where else in the known universe are you supposed to name a file anything but what it is? The site should be fixed. It has been brought to admin's attention. My guess is that they'll fix it eventually.
Until then ... I'm not convinced you were thinking only of others. I could be wrong. That's just my opinion ... it's just as valid as your opinion. You are allowed to question my ability ... I'm allowed to question your motive.
If the 6 were placed side by side the solve would have slapped me in the face. The animation added the additional elements of mystery and -not frustration- but perceived increased difficulty.
Just had to remind myself that it was an Easy OWW (and then I slapped myself!).
Don't count on the filenames being changed on uploading....
I usually don't check the filenames when I moderate... if I happen to, I'll ask the puzzle maker to change it, because the only way I can is to download it, change it, and upload it. And with hundreds of puzzles in the queue, that's a lot of work that could be taken care of more easily by the authors.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you think this puzzle would have been a little easier to solve if the pictures changed more rapidly? I think the timing for this one was about 5 seconds...
Any comments here would help for future animated puzzles.
Thanks

And a really cool one, too. I wish we could get this to work properly.

I don't think that the animation adds anything here. It just makes it take longer to see the whole puzzle.

I wish there were a way to pause it so I could study these more closely!

Had to rely on someone to tell me what the rest of the puzzle was. Can't see animation on dialup. :(

[4] It adds the element of time. And also, screws up people with dialup (sorry, Ref)

I'm glad the animation was there, I wouldn't have gotten 76th just now without it.

I love the "guess what I found when I right-clicked" posts ... now we know how clever you are!
It is possible to discover something like that and then (pause for dramatic effect) not post it.
