Does the font have anything to do with it? It looks like something in the Century Schoolbook family.
... Got it. My background in digital typography lead me astray. This puzzle would have been a lot better had it used terminology appropriate to typography.
The actual font is probably a variation on Madrone Heavy or Bodoni Heavy (say, Didoni) or Claire News Bold. I can't quite place the type designer.
