Hey, Gang, just for our information...

Even if you say nothing else here, would you please give us a quick post on whether this worked for you without having to use one of the links in [1].

    Thanks.

  3. FileAcehopester22 on Feb 23, 2010 07:01 PM

I didn't see any animation in the link.

  5. RobberAppleteamgoat on Feb 23, 2010 07:02 PM

It worked. "You solved this puzzle in 59 seconds and were the 1st Tanga member to solve it. You earned 110 points for solving this."

  6. FileEggplantcllumley on Feb 23, 2010 07:02 PM

  7. Cubs-logoKiwijthommarson on Feb 23, 2010 07:02 PM

    link worked....darn its hard

  8. OctopusPeppercomishcraig on Feb 23, 2010 07:02 PM

Doesn't work unless I follow the link. Using IE.
And I don't get the puzzle either.

  9. FilePancakesjmcintyre on Feb 23, 2010 07:02 PM

Animation worked for me at the URL posted in [1] but not on the base page.

I see the animation now, but haven't solved it yet. Dang!

it did not. please never do this again.

  13. PhotoPotatokevruth on Feb 23, 2010 07:03 PM

    didn't work for me

  14. FractalTomatodduensing on Feb 23, 2010 07:19 PM

did not animate. used firefox 3.6 in windows vista. had to click the link to see it move.

not a fan of this kind of puzzle. pictures go by too fast...need time to look an analyze each one instead of staring and waiting for it to loop over and over again.

I would suggest forward/back buttons, but I"m still not a fan of the puzzle.

finally solved it. got 91st. took 6 google attempts

  27. Avatar_profileRocketbarefootrd on Feb 23, 2010 07:07 PM

Not sure why you decided to demo this as a featured puzzle. Doesn't work in IE, Safari, or FF for me.

Maybe next time demo/beta your stuff before it goes live?

  28. FileSailboatagreene1010 on Feb 23, 2010 07:08 PM

Did not work using Chrome. Had to click link

  29. Soccer_ballCheeseburgersoccer_ref on Feb 23, 2010 07:09 PM

Worked using the link, but not on the Tanga page. However, following the link produced some parts of the animation that went by too quickly to even see clearly and other parts that stayed on screen a long time.

  30. FileEggOllie on Feb 23, 2010 07:09 PM

I had to use the link (using Firefox)

  31. Cubs-logoKiwijthommarson on Feb 23, 2010 07:10 PM

link worked in FF, IE, and Opera for me. never heard of this guy..............ever.

  32. FileTomatobcgrote on Feb 23, 2010 07:11 PM

I had to use the link as well, Win 7, Firefox, with NoScript and Adaware installed, but full permission given to Tanga....

  33. Rf_avatarTomatoRandiman on Feb 23, 2010 07:11 PM

... and I've never heard this one before (that, along with animation fail, equals not much fun).

  34. Avatar_profileRocketbarefootrd on Feb 23, 2010 07:12 PM

    Way to fail tonight. :(

  35. Phi3CornPhilana on Feb 23, 2010 07:22 PM

I had to use the link in [1] in both Firefox and IE.

The animation was too fast in one parts and too slow for all the rest of it. Very frustrating!

Plus, I'd never heard of it. It gets very few Google hits, so it's not what you'd call popular or common knowledge.

  36. Avatar_profileAppleCavlaw on Feb 23, 2010 07:13 PM

No animation on the front puzzle page, using Firefox v3.6. The link worked and was animated.

  37. FileAcehopester22 on Feb 23, 2010 07:14 PM

Finally googled the parts I understood. Also never heard of this guy before. There's always tomorrow.

  38. Avatar_profileRocketTechmage on Feb 23, 2010 07:14 PM

The answer is not inigo montoya, that alone is a fail.

  39. Avatar_profileRadishccothren on Feb 23, 2010 07:18 PM

Never heard of it, but fun all the same.

  40. FilePancakestempus42 on Feb 23, 2010 07:18 PM

  42. Bp3Eggendel3 on Feb 23, 2010 07:20 PM

link in a different page worked on firefox....no clue as to answer...between this and the OWW tonight, I give up....

  43. LiliEggLili on Feb 23, 2010 07:21 PM

[38] LOL! As for me, took too long to start working after I got to the link. Before that, it took me awhile guessing before I even scrolled down to see that there was a link:(

  44. Yeti_seasons_greetingsRocketdjonasty on Feb 23, 2010 07:24 PM

not too good. also, part of the point of the song, IMO, is that it's not spelled the same as it sounds. good old making-fun-of-immigrants :/

    zero points for this one.

  45. FileClockmust67 on Feb 23, 2010 07:25 PM

No animation here with Safari or Firefox. The link worked, but took time loading.

  46. Hermit_crab-206Garlichwango on Feb 23, 2010 07:26 PM

Initial puzzle wasn't animated. I typically don't look at the comments unless I'm stuck, so I didn't realize at first that there was a link to follow to make the puzzle work. With a looping animation, I wasn't sure at first which frame was supposed to be the first one. Too annoying to bother with.

  47. New_scout_logoCheeseburgerscoutmom on Feb 23, 2010 07:31 PM

I just Googled the title and the first "line" and it was the very first hit.

  54. Przewalskis-horseDuckiecrashbaptiste on Feb 23, 2010 07:50 PM

It really wasn't thaaat hard-- just google what you see 'my name is', the state shown, and where they work. The animation didn't work with just this page, but with firefox even the link was fine.

Thank you CWarrior for the effort, for shaking it up, and for teaching me something new! :D

  55. FilePancakesCWarrior on Feb 23, 2010 07:54 PM

    Arnott ... any feedback?

  56. DashPearmercutiom on Feb 23, 2010 08:10 PM

No animation, using Google Chrome on Windows XP.

  57. HeadshotRadishjeanerz13 on Feb 23, 2010 08:14 PM

I use google chrome on Vista. It didn't work in the base or in the link. I had to dust off IE. It worked in IE in the link, but not in the base. I didn't re-log into my account when I used IE...but I don't think that should have affected it...

It went too fast for me to get the clue with four pictures on it. Thanks to [47] I googled one of the "lines" and found it. For the longest time I was convinced it should be Slim Shady. I've never heard of the actual answer...

  58. Avatar_profileAppleastew90 on Feb 23, 2010 08:16 PM

While I can appreciate CWarrior trying something different,
this puzzle was just a hassle and not really fun or difficult (just had to google a couple lines). No disrespect to the creator because I'm sure this took a lot of effort and it was unique, but I hope this is the first and last puzzle like this on Tanga.

  59. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 23, 2010 08:23 PM

    [38] LOL
[55] LOL The word "brickbats" comes to mind. Thank goodness we didn't also implement the new Shock-A-User feature this week.

I guess this is the last of these, then.

  60. FileApplephosrik on Feb 23, 2010 08:35 PM

Animated using Google Chrome but it took a about 30 seconds. When it did animate, it went too fast.

  61. Avatar_profileWatermelonpattimus on Feb 23, 2010 08:45 PM

vonnegut for the win on this rhyme if you've read his books.

  62. WaddamsAppledroopy on Feb 23, 2010 08:49 PM

Animation went way too fast except for the first cell.

  63. FilePotatoPrentice on Feb 23, 2010 08:54 PM

    Nope, didn't work...

  64. FilePumpkinDisreputable on Feb 23, 2010 08:55 PM

I thought the answer was Bruce Lee from the stick figures (the animated thing), but I've no idea of this things origins.

  65. Avatar_profileRadishChriton227 on Feb 23, 2010 08:59 PM

Chrome on Win7, no animation on the main puzzle page, had to use the link in [1]

  66. FilePancakesCWarrior on Feb 23, 2010 09:05 PM

I appreciate the "nice try ... something different, but not for me ... etc." I feel your pain.

For the record, the site strips animation when it is submitted, in spite of the fact that the puzzles are (or at least once was) billed as "multimedia" affairs. So nobody can see it from this page because it simply isn't in the file. You have to use the link in [1] because the "file upload" feature of this site does not strip animation. I guess it's a security feature ...

[61] Thanks for the catching the Vonnegut reference. I thought there'd be more of that.

  67. FilePumpkinJohnQ118 on Feb 23, 2010 09:05 PM

link animated but not the puzzle pic. The animation was too fast to see it 'digestively'. It was hard to see the beginning. Need to be able to start at the beginning and stop and start at will.
    Windows XPsp3 - IE8

I can only keep thinking My Name is Earl, anyway.

  68. FilePumpkinJohnQ118 on Feb 23, 2010 09:20 PM

I had to go Hither and YON to find this answer; not being from the Mid-West I wouldn't know or ever have heard of this Johnson Joke.

The animation CONCEPT is OK, but there needas to be START-STOP-CONTINUE buttons to make it actually work at a slower speed.

  69. Avatar_profileAppleAndraX2000 on Feb 23, 2010 09:35 PM

Obscure. But with a little google-fu, easy enough.

  70. KittylolxRocketjohanna on Feb 23, 2010 09:42 PM

Had to use the link. Really hated the pictures flipping by. I like to stare at things and think. Don't know what the answer is and really don't care. And Cryptopixes are my favorites.

  71. Thumbs_up_guyBananasamisgr8 on Feb 23, 2010 10:13 PM

Had to use the link as well (Firefox 3.6 on Win XP). I enjoyed the change, but agree with another commenter that there needed to be a way to flip through the images instead of having it timed like it was...it went WAYYYY too fast... Thanks for at least trying something new, though!

  72. FileApplepateachoux on Feb 23, 2010 10:49 PM

Animation works just fine however it is not helping me solve the puzzle. It moves far too quickly, I don't have time to figure out what all of the images are. Also I have no clue what the answer might be,

  73. FileApplepateachoux on Feb 23, 2010 10:52 PM

Huh. Did quite a bit of summer camping and I have NEVER heard of this. My husband was a Boy Scout and has also never heard of this.

  74. 50s_womanCarrotpennyb9 on Feb 23, 2010 11:42 PM

Sorry, warrior, I have to agree with those who found this a hassle and not that much fun. And I, too, have never heard of this.

  75. MeKiwipadlocksan on Feb 24, 2010 12:16 AM

I had to use the link in [1]. I didn't see anything without it.
The link animation was definitely too fast and I had to watch it 5 or more times, But I am still not sure that I saw it.

  76. MeKiwipadlocksan on Feb 24, 2010 12:22 AM

Got the answer with google as suggest in [54]
    Never heard of it.

  77. FilePepperdajagr on Feb 24, 2010 12:37 AM

No animation for the puzzle without the link, and I can't even get anything with Google.

  78. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Feb 24, 2010 01:00 AM

But at least we're hearing from a lot users who don't normally post :)

  79. FileSailboatAlba on Feb 24, 2010 01:43 AM

Animation worked only in link. I knew a different variant. Spelling turned out to be sensitive (phonetic instead of actual name) -- difficult for a puzzle that relies on an oral traditon.

  80. AvatarAcewhutaguy on Feb 24, 2010 02:39 AM

I had to use the link, and could not have solved the puzzle if my Grandparents hadn't sung it frequently. I've never head it from any other source

  81. FilePotatoDadmeister on Feb 24, 2010 02:55 AM

[2] Had to use the link. then it worked in Firefox.

  82. Avatar_profileOrangemuzz6201 on Feb 24, 2010 03:12 AM

[1] Had to use the link, had to use google, and I'm from the midwest, was a boy scout, and camped my whole life...and I've never heard of the song

  83. ScottOnionoberjt on Feb 24, 2010 04:00 AM

I had to use the link. I wasn't a fan of the animation. Like someone said up above, it went too fast. I'd prefer to skip animations unless there was some way to click through each individual pane, but then you might as well just do the puzzle as a four panel puzzle.

  84. Avatar_profileGrapesMickey1821 on Feb 24, 2010 04:16 AM

Had to use the link for animation, and one google to solve. Work uses IE6, shh, the puzzles get my brain moving in the morning.

  85. Sc002a57f6Pumpkinrunart on Feb 24, 2010 04:41 AM

I got this immediately but knew it with different first initials. It made me sad because my cousin always sang it when we were kids and he died tragically last year. I'll have the song in my head all day now.

  86. Avatar_959_jpg100_200x200RaspberryRocketeer on Feb 24, 2010 05:13 AM

    ===
I'm still partial to one of my animated puzzles from the past:
    http://www.tanga.com/puzzles/3974-10-28-2008
    ;-)
But it got similar feedback - like having to watch it numerous times to find the pattern, then to solve.

And I was just getting ready to make a new (11 frame) animated one with lights shining on letters ... I think I'll scrap it for fear of being burned at the stake!
    ===

  87. Avatar_profilePlumdanagriffin03 on Feb 24, 2010 05:15 AM

This is the worst one I have ever seen!

  88. Final_5_18_10_v1Pancakesdragontrainer on Feb 24, 2010 05:53 AM

I needed the link as well to get the animation (IE 6).

I didn't think this was any worse than other obscure answers/sayings that are not well known. I like having 5 second solve times as much as the next person, but it's ok with me if some cryptopix are more challenging.

I can't say it's my favorite puzzle, but I'm all for authors changing things up and trying different things!

  89. FileCarrotmmene on Feb 24, 2010 07:13 AM

I am not quite sure what to make of all the feedback. I too did not get the animation until I clicked the link. If that was intentional the link should probably have been in the puzzle frame itself so people knew that they are supposed to click a link. I can't imagine why the link did not work in so many peoples browsers, it worked fine in Firefox 3 for me. Maybe some setting needs to be enabled, I am not sure.
Apart from that the reference was obscure and I had not heard of that before but that is no disqualification since that is true of lots of puzzles. The key is that I could find it pretty easily with some googling - much less googling than I have used for other puzzles I was not familiar with.
Puzzlemakers - please don't cater to the lowest common denominator as this takes away from the point of it being a puzzle in the first place. The key is that there should be a reasonable path to finding the solution. I am an immigrant, relatively familiar obscure parts of american culture and I could google the answer. That should mean that that it should fall at least somewhere in the solvable range.
Plus I enjoy learning new snippets of information from puzzles that I was completely unfamiliar with the background of. I would probably loose interest if every single puzzle fell smack into the middle of my knowledge base.
    FWIW, those are my thoughts.

  90. Avatar_profileBananaDJKuulA on Feb 24, 2010 07:14 AM

Had to click the link using FF. Didn't think it was a bad puzzle (even though I wasn't familiar with the answer, once the animation worked it was easy enough to search). I've seen *far* worse in recent OWWs!

  91. The_faceSailboatChrika on Feb 24, 2010 07:25 AM

had to click on the link but it worked fine. I'm using IE7.

  92. 8grg3zbpu691mpv38q2nRaspberryjebediehard on Feb 24, 2010 08:27 AM

As I see it, there are a few things going on:

-Totally different type of puzzle media
-The use of a link to access the puzzle (done before, but not recently)
    -Animation too fast, for some
    -Obscure answer, for some

One thing that was not mentioned, I find, is whether or not this qualifies as a Cryptopix. To me, it seemed more like a TWO (two-word wonder) with animation.

Having said that, Kudos to CWarrior for his attempt at "pushing the envelope" (hmmm... I could see that as an animated cryptopix)

  93. FilePumpkinjeffg on Feb 24, 2010 07:40 AM

It took me 1 second after seeing the second screen of the animation to know the answer, but 6 minutes to guess the spelling.

  94. Tiger_043_jmcrayApplecindypaul on Feb 24, 2010 07:50 AM

WOW, finally got it but i've never heard of it either. Basically googled with hints from the puzzle and comments until finally after 15 mins and adding word after word i narrowed it down. Puzzle didn't load except with the link and i agree i had to watch it like 11 or 12 times to get the 3rd frame where he worked. it goes by to fast. need forward and backward buttons.

  95. Almost-sold-out-product2OnionDrewO on Feb 24, 2010 07:54 AM

Animation didn't work for me using Firefox v. 3.5.7

Being a FIB this was easy for me once I saw the animation.

  96. Avatar_profileOrangeTDuck on Feb 24, 2010 08:00 AM

    No animation in Chrome 4.0.266.0
Never heard of this rhyme either, but the animation was clear enough to do a search and get the answer.

  97. FilePumpkinDisreputable on Feb 24, 2010 09:12 AM

    SLIM SHADY!

  98. FileEggplantHackmaster12 on Feb 24, 2010 09:47 AM

    Animation in puzzle didn't work.
    Animation in link did work.
    Brain not working.

  99. FilePumpkinkenpez on Feb 24, 2010 11:09 AM

No animation on the main puzzle page, had to use the link in [1].

[97] LOL ... that was my first guess too before I clicked on the link.

  100. PirogoethPlumPirogoeth on Feb 24, 2010 11:59 AM

Needed the link for the animation. And I totally agree with [54]. Just google a few things together and you've got it!
