    Hmm...9 "crosses", 8 clues....???

Edit..and what kind of problems does the carpenter have?
Edit..I give..I'll take another look in the AM

  2. FileXylophoneQurqirishDragon on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:06 PM

[1] You have to find the 9th clue :-)

    (and there IS one...)

  3. Bp3Raspberryendel3 on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:07 PM

[2] well i certainly don't have it...but maybe the carpenter does...

  4. Elliott_cofa-sCarrotknightelliott on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:08 PM

This was a great puzzle! Well done!

  5. Ted_doggPancakesdmlafrance on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:16 PM

    Excellent Puzzle :)

  6. Avatar_profileRaspberrygwk1967 on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:51 PM

One of the clue answers will fit in its cross two ways. Does that matter?

Finally solved. The answer I referred to yielded the same hint to the final answer either way, so it didn't matter after all.

  7. FileGarlick1w1 on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:18 PM

    Lots of fun.

  8. FractalEggdduensing on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:25 PM

still working on getting/fitting the "breeze at your back" and "carpenter's mount" clues.....

    hard puzzle

NM....got it with some salt..... didn't think there would be an apostrophe

  9. Avatar_profileSailboatcdavis124 on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:21 PM

    Awesome Arnott!

  10. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:22 PM

[6] It shouldn't. Maybe you have the wrong answer?

  11. FilePepperhairy_lime on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:24 PM

Good puzzle! This one nearly kicked mine ...

  12. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:27 PM

[8] For the first, think of an airplane - hey AIRPLANE crosses at the A (not salt, just noticed) - and for the second, clues that end in question marks are usually punny or lateral. What do you mount? And what might a carpenter use?

  13. Avatar_profilePumpkindaspore on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:28 PM

Thank you for putting in all that effort for such a fun puzzle!

  14. FractalEggdduensing on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:35 PM

[12] As I said earlier, I did solve the puzzle.

Doing lots of crosswords, I'm very familiar with the ? in the clues denoting a joke....

The problem I had was too many double meanings.... Carpenter could have meant Karen or Richard of the 70s group...and "mount" could have meant mountain.

Gotta stop thinking so much.....but the ? "pun" mark always gets me thinking off-tangent.

  15. FilePancakesArnott (Tanga Admin) on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:37 PM

    [14] LOL.

Truth be told, I only went that route because I didn't like any of the straight-forward clues I came up with. But I would have rather had a nice straight-forward clue here, as solving the crossword clues isn't what this puzzle should be about.

  16. 8grg3zbpu691mpv38q2nPancakesjebediehard on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:49 PM

Clever puzzle. I totally enjoyed how you used the "Notes" in the "Solution" section.

  17. Avatar_profileOniontinhorn on Mon Mar 15, 2010 07:59 PM

    Nice puzzle.

Regarding your endnote, could you replace the longer outliers and still meet your desired criteria with:

    Pallet raiser
    Honoree at a baptism

  18. Avatar_profileCarrotmmene on Mon Mar 15, 2010 08:01 PM

I am not sure where to start. I think I have most of the words but not sure what to do with them. I thought I knew but the monkees song does not fit the pattern for sure - not enough letters.
    Any salt would be appreciated.

  19. 8grg3zbpu691mpv38q2nPancakesjebediehard on Mon Mar 15, 2010 08:03 PM

[18] I'm pretty sure there are two Monkees song that could go in that blank, one of which would be way too short.

  20. FilePancakesjmcintyre on Mon Mar 15, 2010 08:14 PM

Nice one. I kept trying to force the key letters into the extra shape, not noticing their significance. Curse you, Red Baron!!!

  21. Image001RadishKennyBruin on Mon Mar 15, 2010 09:11 PM

Outstanding! BTW, where I live there are multiple pages of laws and rules regulating the answer to this puzzle. And who says there are too many lawyers . . .

  22. Tanga_profile_photoRaspberryWhiteKnight85 on Mon Mar 15, 2010 10:49 PM

I always love Arnott's puzzles, and this is no exception.

Very fun and different, and thanks very much for the peek behind the curtain in your Answer notes section. Very enjoyable and enlightening.

I hope your ass gets feeling better really soon.

  23. FilePepperdajagr on Mon Mar 15, 2010 10:18 PM

I thought I knew what was going on, but I can't get about half of my answers to work.

  24. Avatar_profileRocketbarefootrd on Mon Mar 15, 2010 10:54 PM

Anyone that's solved this feel like talking in TG? I'm lost towards the end, but I don't want to post too much salt. :(

Edit: Haha, amazing puzzle! :) The answer threw me a little bit, but it's hard to explain why without heavy salt (I think).

  25. Avatar_profileStrawberrytrumpetman on Mon Mar 15, 2010 11:45 PM

    That was Great! Thanks.

  26. MeKiwipadlocksan on Mon Mar 15, 2010 11:55 PM

    Good Puzzle.

Although I had a good idea of how to solve the puzzle, I kept looking at the Shape of the grids and wondering if they didn't spell out a word of some kind. Lots of L's and R's and T's

  27. FileEggMurdoctor on Tue Mar 16, 2010 06:08 AM

Regarding the "Notes", I think that's a good window into the puzzle-creation world, as most of us have experienced that level of frustration and churn. I think many of the other puzzle creators can relate to it, while those who haven't done much puzzle authorship may be able to appreciate the frequent difficulty of the process.

  28. 07310099PepperLakeLivin on Tue Mar 16, 2010 08:48 AM

    Fun one!

  29. Avatar_profileBananabhodges on Tue Mar 16, 2010 09:13 AM

Stuck on Needle search venue and resistant to burning.

  30. Avatar_profileStrawberryRusty13 on Tue Mar 16, 2010 09:37 AM

[29] It's what you wish for your feet to be resistant to burning "Under the Boardwalk". Hope that's not too salty the morning after:)

  31. Ted_doggPancakesdmlafrance on Tue Mar 16, 2010 09:38 AM

[29] For the first one - Where would be a really tough place to find a needle?

  32. FileEggMurdoctor on Tue Mar 16, 2010 09:38 AM

[29] Where might one search for a needle, proverbially speaking?

And what do you call something that is resistant to burning? (If you still can't figure it out, you might want to ask Kirk Cameron...)

  33. Avatar_profilePlumpsrmiami on Tue Mar 16, 2010 10:39 AM

It turns out I did knot have to research the various types of knots.
I enjoyed reading the authors' notes. Thks.

  34. Avatar_profileWatermelonCourtney321 on Tue Mar 16, 2010 11:08 AM

This is my first Tanga puzzle. I have all the clue answers, but can't solve one word answer ... argh.

  35. Avatar_profileBananabhodges on Tue Mar 16, 2010 11:34 AM

    Thanks for the help!

  36. KittylolxRocketjohanna on Tue Mar 16, 2010 12:49 PM

I think I even have the final answer cross but can't find the one word for it. Trying to Google on that little logo on lower right too and getting nothing. Googling the two "words" I have and getting nothing. If I said "goodbye jpg" am I at least on the right track?

  37. SaturnCarrotdkeith on Tue Mar 16, 2010 12:50 PM

[36] the little logo is the author's signature - an R-knot - and is not part of the puzzle

  38. Tanga_profile_photoRaspberryWhiteKnight85 on Tue Mar 16, 2010 04:22 PM

[36] I'm not sure where "goodbye jpg" comes from, but no, I'd say you're on the wrong track.

The name of the JPG file is a good clue: "Crosshairs"

  39. Avatar_profileBananaLuce on Tue Mar 16, 2010 09:10 PM

If goodbye.jpg won't help maybe you might check out hello.jpg for some salt?

  40. KittylolxRocketjohanna on Wed Mar 17, 2010 10:53 AM

[18] wrong Monkey's song. And if goodbye jpg or goodbye rtf or anything with that meaning doesn't make any sense, then I have the arrangement wrong. I think I have all eight cross words correct but I was trying to fit those letters into the remaining grid rather than use them as a clue. Post and Solve. Yep! was trying to fit the letters in the grid with crossed D's.

  41. MarkerryanSailboatryanker on Tue Nov 23, 2010 05:13 AM

Was completely stumped and finally had to give up. :-(

I was over thinking the pun and had the wrong word for Carpenter's Mount. "Golgotha" probably isn't a compound word in Hebrew, anyhow. BUT, having that word in the space that the final answer SHOULD have occupied, made some sense, given its shape. Especially since these are all mini "cross" word puzzles.

With that wrong letter and the wrong shape left, I didn't even come close to the final answer. Oh well.

    Good puzzle, Arnott!
