Three top 10s on a triple threat of Arnott puzzles... I'll take it :)
Erm... same thing as last night-- got the words, but not sure what to do with them now!
[2] Pretty salty - Thank you!
[4] Gusssr! You made it!! :D
Got 5 words.
Got no clue :(
I even saw the salt in [2] and it meant nothing to me
Same, got the words, but what now? Any salt, please.
same boat as so many others
[6] I'm with you. I even saw the "too salty" now gone comment #2 and I'm still stuck.
[6] same here....shame I missed seeing [2]s salt
The joy of finishing the first step is dashed by the frustration of not getting the second step ...
grrrrr
I'm trying to figure out what the image is in the background. They look like 5 helicopters plummeting to earth to me. :)
Hmmm... how about instead of salt I give you a SALTER?
Or, as they might say in the bible...
i'm with you all! got 5 words... but now what?
[11] Well, the first step isn't really the puzzle. Hopefully the real joy will come.
I here all of ewe complaining but I don't no what to dew two help.
Great puzzle! Can't believe I got 48th on an Arnott puzzle! And after 18 minutes!
Ugh, same boat as so many others...5 words, nowhere to go...but to bed!
hehe, well if I didn't think that the "bridle" was what controls the horse, I would have had this much sooner.
Got it ... and it put me over 100K ...
[16] I hereby second my nomination for soccer_ref in the Salt Hall Of Fame!
[20] PANCAKES!!!!
Tuff!
[11] LOL, and your old CHILI PEPPER is still there! Cool. I'm kinda glad we have this "bug."
[16] Thanks - that's what I needed. Now I'm really confused about why #2 was pulled - it took me totally down the wrong direction! *shrug* Got it now.
And [13] makes alot more sense now that it's been edited! :) Before, I was shaking stuff up and managed to get"aero" out of it. LOL
[13], that did it!
[16][23] Heh, these may be helpful, but technically they're not quite right :)
They could, for example, steer you towards an umbrella on the third answer, which would be wrong. But I'm really just picking nits.
i think i might not have the fourth clue correct... any salt?
Not sure how you are supposed to come up with this solution. If I had not gotten help from a friend by TG I would still be staring at my 5 words. No indication of solve method.
[21] motion carried!!!
You solved this puzzle in 14 minutes and 19 seconds and were the 64th Tanga member to solve it. You earned 47 points for solving this.
Thanks [16]!
[13] thanks...got it now
I was so happy to find a way to use the 5 words, but my word didn't take....forgot to take the next step. Aaaaahhhh. But still 71st!
You solved this puzzle in 23 minutes and 48 seconds and were the 70th Tanga member to solve it. You earned 41 points for solving this.
I had this one a long time ago (even though I had the 3rd word wrong), but I forgot to lather, rinse, repeat. Yeesh.
Great puzzle!
[25] You're too fast for me, Sonjahi.
[28] Well, it's not YOURS or MINE.
[29] Without a push, it wouldn't have been solvable, period.
Don't waste time trying to work in "lodge".
Took me nearly 27 minutes, but I still finished in the top 100.
Turns out I was almost on the right track the whole time, just that I was a little too far off track to throw me off.
At least I took 1st on the cryptopix.
ok, too smart for me. I give up
[36] Obviously some people solved it without a push, so that statement can't be true.
I thought this puzzle was fun. Difficult but fun. Why is it that all the difficult puzzles are always rated low on the fun meter? Don't people like solving challenging puzzles?
"Wow" on this one. Top 100 on all three!
[40] For the most part, no. But that won't stop us from publishing 'em :)
29 minutes repeating the same five words is not really that fun. I'm convinced I have the right words, but still not getting it.
Just squeaked in at 91
[43] Reread [16].
[23] That has always been argued on doubles.
2nd to solve - One of my better finishes :)
Loved the puzzle Arnott!!
[42] Good for you!! Don't stop! the puzzles are certainly more fun when there is a challenge.
Ok, I give on this one. Even with all the salt I am lost. I will go to sleep and try it when I wake up. If that fails I will just "view solution" in 24 hours and then realize how close I was and give myself a face palm.
[49] i feel the same... sigh.
[49][50] How about this...
Both of my uncles took their WIVES to a picnic, but there were PESTS everywhere.
They made it up to them, though, buying them PERFUMES for PENNIES.
[51] LOL, maybe that should have been the puzzle format :)
That's what makes these puzzles fun, [29]! You really have to think! Most of the time the solve method is too "off the wall" for my little brain, but tonight it just clicked & I got it. Even if I don't get the puzzle, I enjoy checking the solution the next day & that helps me with future puzzles.
That's what Tanga's all about! ;^)
There's about a TON of salt in [51]!!
[51] Now THAT was fun!
Good puzzle! I actually had part of the answer quite a while ago, but didn't realize it.
When I had to stop and think about the spelling for the first one - that was all I needed.
Finally got it! And it put me over 3000 for a new badge!
[51] haha, your salt there didn't help me because i pronounce aunts as "ah_unts" so it didn't even occur to me until my bf pointed it out. but with his help, i was able to solve the puzzle. yay! =)
Level 1 puzzlemaker: Gives clues that hint at solution
Level 2 puzzlemaker: Hides solution inside the clues
Level 3 puzzlemaker: Hides solution outside the clues!
Thanks Arnott, you bent my brain with that one =)
[60] Heh, I like that. I think a Level 3 puzzlemaker came up with those distinctions.
Got it without thinking of the second part to the second clue. This puzzle really took some thinking! Would have been a lot easier if it told you what to do!
[60], [61] Actually, a lot depends on the puzzle moderator as well. All the moderators I've dealt with have required that there be a clue to the solution method within the puzzle; otherwise, the puzzle would not even be nominated, much less featured.
[59] Thank you! I don't pronounce my uncle's wives the way you do but I still didn't get [51] until I read your post and I already knew the answer to the puzzle! I can be slow sometimes though.
[63] I don't know... I think there's a clue of sorts in here. Most of the time, you get a list of words or phrases and they have something in common. That commonality is a clue. In this case, it is obvious almost immediately that these words have nothing in common - at least not if you focus on the meaning of the words. But they *must* have something in common or this puzzle would be unfair. So what is it? It's not a pattern of sorts like your wonderful OWW the night before. So if it's not the construction of the words nor the meaning of the words, it must be the sound or some sort of wordplay. Like [57] - I noticed the 1st word too and it should have gotten me there. I'm irritated with myself for not going down that line of thinking last night. It would have saved me needing soccer_ref's comment.
ahh....slightly tripped up by spelling, and missing part 2 until I read through the comments. Thanks arnott for[51], it got me where i needed to be
[51] Thanks!
Got the 5 "other" words and still nothing... sigh.
[67] What did you have to do to get those "other" words? Maybe you should concentrate on what you did instead of what you ended up with. And then don't forget to do it again.
[67] I looked forever for an answer to this OWW. Painful. And I remembered a trip to Nome, AK. I looked and looked for a gnome to bring back. There were none, of course.
But at least I solved this puzzle!
When are these puzzles published? I mean 7:00pm what zone? I was looking for it last night at 8:30pm CST and it wasn't there?
I did solve it, I'm just real late to the party.
Bah. Solved... stupid me went the precipitous route for word 3. Ended up with garbage, right word = solved.
[70] The Featured Puzzles on Tanga are published every night at 7PM Pacific Time. The Cryptopix and One Word Wonder change every night, while a new Hypercross goes up every other night.
The Unfeatured/Approved puzzles are published once a week, every Saturday morning at 7AM Pacific Time.
[69] Gee - that was some good salt :)
My first ever Tanga puzzle. Thanks, Arnott -- that was fun!
[74] Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!
Thanks Arnott for having me on the edge without giving up for the longest time before solving. With your attention to the posts I felt sooooo close for sooooo long that I could not let it go.
This was a satisfying puzzle and I am going to remember this as the first solve after attaining STU status.
-Thx!
Thank you for a wonderful puzzle...but I totally GIVE UP!
Hugs,
Susan
Almost a day late but i finally got it !!
now I can say it was really clever
i totally feel like i have it. I know whats going on with the words. salt has helped me out. but is the answer WITHIN the five words? or is it ABOUT the five words. I've tried pretty much every possible answer ABOUT the five words however.
Thank you [64]. I had the words the first minute, and couldn't figure out what they had in common. Goes to show that sometimes we overlook the obvious things.
[64] So the clue is that there's no clue?? That's not a clue!
Sigh, I had the 5 letter answer almost immediately, but I only lathered and rinsed. SIGH.
Why did it take me so long to add one little letter? Had the answer last nite, just didn't know it.
[81] If the clue isn't stated (as you can probably say is true for this puzzle), then do exactly what 64 said. Look at what is given, and look for a pattern. If you've read much of these posts here already, then you know there's something going on with homonyms in this puzzle.
Look at the list of words and their homonyms. Write the two lists side by side if you need, and look for patterns. Once you see the pattern, you'll be 95% of the way there.
Once you are 95% of the way there, just look at [82] and [83].
Fabulous puzzle....clever and no math.
