I see a common thread but not what to do with it... hmmm...

  2. Tanga_nate_2_GrapesTangaNate on Sep 23, 2010 07:31 PM

I beat my best on both puzzles tonight. This one was tricky but as soon as we realized the pattern it was a piece of pie from there.

    Really cool idea! Thanks!

  3. FileTomatoat8ax on Sep 23, 2010 07:05 PM

Ah. One of those "enter what you find even though you've never heard of it before" answers. Very nice.

  4. FileOnionjaymanmsu on Sep 23, 2010 07:06 PM

Thank you wikipedia. Didn't solve it the traditional way, but looked up the common element.

  5. FileTomatobcgrote on Sep 23, 2010 07:06 PM

    Euler.... Euler....

    Not getting anything beyond that...

  6. FileOnionjaymanmsu on Sep 23, 2010 07:07 PM

    [5] You're a few decades too late.

  7. Avatar_profileGrapesCasualSax on Sep 23, 2010 07:08 PM

Not really sure where to start on this one.

  8. Phi3CornPhilana on Sep 23, 2010 07:09 PM

    Nice!

  9. FileClockJewelia on Sep 23, 2010 07:10 PM

[8] Yes! Excellent mini-sweep from a relatively new puzzlemaker!

  10. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Sep 23, 2010 07:11 PM

It's embarrassing to have had an extremely similar idea on the back side of the paper I'm using for scratch and still have so much trouble getting it! :(

  11. Avatar_profileGrapesCasualSax on Sep 23, 2010 07:17 PM

67th, and before the heavy salt too. :) Very cute idea!

  12. FileCarrotmmene on Sep 23, 2010 07:18 PM

[10] - I am still where you were with [1]. Looks like there is an aha moment I am missing somewhere.

  13. Christopher_david_ryan_-_eyeGarlickc6201 on Sep 23, 2010 07:19 PM

I'm not even sure I see the common thread...

  14. Eg181208Potatotvfamily on Sep 23, 2010 07:21 PM

I've tried every derivation of the common thread, but still not close...........

  15. Img_0189Egggst on Sep 23, 2010 07:21 PM

A kinda common solve method, but this is a very clean use.
    Pretty neat.

  16. Avatar_smallOnionidontkn1 on Sep 23, 2010 07:34 PM

To be honest I've always disliked these type of OWWs where the answer is so obscure that you have idea if what you "derived" is correct until submiting your answer. The set up is nice but i can think of 10,000 other words related to the theme that are used a lot more often in everyday English.

  17. FileSailboatrashawnsgrandma on Sep 23, 2010 07:25 PM

[9] did ya notice, the relatively new puzzle-maker got a shout out from "finagrace" and I never did :( I feel like Hyacinth of "Keeping Up Appearances", everyone in her neighborhood was burglarized except for her & she was hurt?!? :)

[10] you silly girl - always check the backside !!! :)

  18. FilePepperdajagr on Sep 23, 2010 07:24 PM

How I want a drink--alcoholic, of course!--after the heavy lectures involving quantum mechanics!

  19. MarkerryanCarrotryanker on Sep 23, 2010 07:26 PM

Common thread? Check. Meaning? Still working.

  20. NukelogoPlumgimpy on Sep 23, 2010 07:27 PM

    Tasty salt [19]. Thanks

  21. PhotoRocketdenisepinto on Sep 23, 2010 07:28 PM

Kept trying to line up the common element in some sort of cascade before I figured out what I could index with! Of course! Great puzzle.

  22. Christopher_david_ryan_-_eyeGarlickc6201 on Sep 23, 2010 07:28 PM

Okay, I've got the common thread now at least, thanks to [14].

  23. SnaitfAppleSnaitf on Sep 23, 2010 07:29 PM

You solved this puzzle in 26 minutes and 38 seconds and were the 93rd Tanga member to solve it. You earned 18 points for solving this.

Just under the wire! Had the commonality figured out, but couldn't figure where to go from there, then I read the 2nd part of [14] and felt dumb...

  24. Avatar_profileGrapesCasualSax on Sep 23, 2010 07:30 PM

I read a book about his life not too long ago, which oddly enough has nothing to do with this puzzle.

  25. SavethewordscopySailboatWordoPhile on Sep 23, 2010 07:31 PM

    TG anyone??
I feel like I almost have it but ...

  26. SavethewordscopySailboatWordoPhile on Sep 23, 2010 07:31 PM

    TG anyone??
I feel like I almost have it but ...

  27. Eg181208Potatotvfamily on Sep 23, 2010 07:32 PM

    TG Also?

  28. Christopher_david_ryan_-_eyeGarlickc6201 on Sep 23, 2010 07:34 PM

You solved this puzzle in 21 minutes and 33 seconds and were the 108th Tanga member to solve it. You earned 10 points for solving this.

    Of course, of course!

  29. FileEggj15bell on Sep 23, 2010 07:34 PM

I feel dumb because we just did this on Saturday. I saw the commonality and just stared at it feeling I should "get this". Deja Vue. eh?

  30. Avatar_profileGrapesCasualSax on Sep 23, 2010 07:35 PM

    TG? What's that?

  31. FileCarrotmmene on Sep 23, 2010 07:36 PM

How aggravating - I have the pattern and all the salt is tantalizing but still not connecting the dots.

  32. Christopher_david_ryan_-_eyeGarlickc6201 on Sep 23, 2010 07:37 PM

    .

  33. UntitledRocketmcgeorge on Sep 23, 2010 07:38 PM

I had the commonality 35 minutes ago.
I was sure I was looking at a pioneer in his field.
I know I am going to kick myself when I finally get it.
This after being 13th on the crypto.... argh.

  34. Avatar_profileGrapesCasualSax on Sep 23, 2010 07:38 PM

[32] If you have the pattern, you have the key.

  35. MarkerryanCarrotryanker on Sep 23, 2010 07:42 PM

That took embarrassingly long. 114th... darn it.

    [3] Same here.

  36. SnaitfAppleSnaitf on Sep 23, 2010 07:40 PM

    [31] TG stands for Tangagram

  37. SavethewordscopySailboatWordoPhile on Sep 23, 2010 07:46 PM

    finally got it
    Thanks for the TG [37]

[25] really? wow that must have been a page turner! ;) j/k

Im just envious because I had never even heard of the guy! :)

  38. FileCarrotmmene on Sep 23, 2010 07:47 PM

OK, I am caving in, can someone send me a TG too?

  39. Avatar_profileGrapesevhershey on Sep 23, 2010 07:50 PM

  40. Avatar_profileAppleleroya1 on Sep 23, 2010 07:51 PM

  41. SnaitfAppleSnaitf on Sep 23, 2010 08:02 PM

[28][39]I've sent you TG's, but I'm not gonna just give you the answer, I'll help YOU solve it. But you need to respond...

[EDIT] Nevermind, you took too long, gotta go, sorry.

  42. Nick_dress_blues_2Pancakesbitwisenot on Sep 23, 2010 07:59 PM

    I didn't like this puzzle.

  43. FilePepperChupper on Sep 23, 2010 08:18 PM

My very first published puzzle helped me solve this one.

  44. Avatar_profileStrawberrymindfreer on Sep 23, 2010 10:34 PM

[35]have the key, can't unlock it

  45. Avatar_profileGrapesteam.venture on Sep 23, 2010 10:50 PM

[35]thanks for the salt, couldn't figure it out all night until I read that

  46. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Sep 24, 2010 06:15 AM

    [45] TG sent.

  47. Bp3Eggendel3 on Sep 24, 2010 07:20 AM

[18], [10], you mean scratch your backside????

  48. SpencerWatermelonsphoenix1972 on Sep 24, 2010 07:42 AM

I see the common thread but can't figure it out.

  49. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Sep 24, 2010 07:46 AM

    [49] TG comin' your way...

  50. Bp3Eggendel3 on Sep 24, 2010 07:51 AM

  51. FilePepperclarencebyer on Sep 24, 2010 08:07 AM

I too see the common thread, but have hit a roadblock beyond that. Guess it's time to give up and ask....A TG would be appreciated.

  52. Eg181208Potatotvfamily on Sep 24, 2010 08:22 AM

the 212nd Tanga member to solve it. You earned 10 points for solving this.

I don't know why I had such a problem solving this. I knew the key from the start, but didn't insert it, I guess. Again.....making it too hard......

  53. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Sep 24, 2010 09:01 AM

    [52] TG it is... :)

  54. Avatar_profileCherriespacky62 on Sep 24, 2010 10:33 AM

ok new to this what is a TG?

  55. 023_30aKiwiandu on Sep 24, 2010 12:58 PM

    [4] same here!

  56. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Sep 24, 2010 02:09 PM

[55] A TG is a Tangagram. A private discussion thread between two individuals. We often use them to share hints to people who want/need a little more help than would be appropriate to put out on the public thread.

  57. Avatar_profilePearakaash on Sep 24, 2010 04:48 PM

    Can I get a TG?
