Fun one!
How come when I have no idea how to solve the puzzle, the first comment is always, "fun one!"?
[2] only to make us feeler dumber than we already do!
[2] Ditto!
[2], yeah, right?
It was fun- but also broken. The solution method does NOT give a unique answer, and so the second step has MANY possibilities.
Okay, got the top 100 in the hyper and crypto, but coming to a dead halt on this one, and I don't have a lot of time. : (
If I know rocketeer's puzzles, I expect to repeat [1]'s comments, but later....
I don't even know where to start.
I've got some double vision going on some, but not all, of the clues. Am I on the right track?
[1] Seriously? This is fun? I don't see it.
Well, about 1/2 the pics are animals.....
On a lighter (and unrelated note) I just earned my tomato :-)
[8] Start with tonight's Hypercross :o)
[12] congrats!
[11] I think you're being a bit harsh. Maybe in his early years before he quit drinking. . .
Very enjoyable!
I didn't share (6)'s experience; I found a little shuffling led me straight to the answer.
nice triple puzzle night.
[15] ROFL!!!
[11], ya but can only pair about 2 animals with anything..
Woo-hoo! Thanks, [11]. Actually is very nice - once you see where to go. (And btw, my "double" comment above was on the wrong track).
[6] Don't know of the other possibilities. My google search turned this answer up first.
[18] Agreed. [15] You crack me up! :)
[19] Not so. Keep workin' it.
doesn't help there are some possible alternate answers that screw everything up....
[21], trying, but I think I give...another day tomorrow,....
[16] I may have exaggerated a bit, but I found a different root for my first two or three tries. My second organization got the correct answer- but that doesn't mean there aren't more arrangements, just that I didn't need to keep searching.
[23] do the hyper first. then this one.
[25] done finished long time ago...
If anyone's having trouble and wants to TG their pairs to me, I'll be happy to check them and give you a nudge.
While there may be more than one way to put some of the pieces together, I found only one way that puts them "all" together.
Never heard of about half of these...thank god for google....
edit--thought it was a lobster and a deer....you don't wanna know half the pairs I came up with....
Loved it, Rocketeer !
I kept thinking the grass and radish were a single picture for some reason, coupled with not realizing those bovines were plural, so the puzzle couldn't come together for me for a while. I had a rare night that it was pretty obvious how to solve otherwise, must be all the caffeine I got from two large coke zeroes at the movies tonight, though I did need google on the last step.
PS, Due Date steals quite liberally from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and isn't as funny. Galifianakis and Downey Jr don't have half the chemistry of Candy and Martin. Now I'm rambling. I'll blame all the caffeine again. None of this should be construed as salt.
[28] Me too.
54th after half an hour! Nice puzzle Rocketeer!
58th after half an hour, but I had the answer five minutes in and didn't think it was right. Argh.
Nice puzzle.
Neat concept, but I found that the "left over" one could match with one of the pictures there, causing me confusion since I had the wrong thing "left over".
I got 44th on the hyper and I see an obvious connection here, but am lost as to where to go. I too have the leftover one, but guess I'm just not awake tonight. Any salt to help me wake up? Thanks.
Holy cow! 75th after 51 mins? Man, this was a tough one! Never heard of the last pairing, so it came down to a guess for me. Agree with [34] that the left over one could match with several other things.
[36] Stick with COMMON garden varieties.
had the wrong word for the top right, which made me make some incorrect associations. (it's a male deer)
84th after well over an hour - that is pretty slow going.
So ... now that I've found all the pairs and know the leftover word, what do I do with it?
Kind of hard as a few can be interchanged..but I finally got it...and still under 100..Woo Hoo! Nice one Rocketeer.
[35] [40] What's missing from the one you have left over that "fits" the theme? Google may be your friend here if you're lost.
You solved this puzzle in 1 hour, 10 minutes and 25 seconds and were the 86th Tanga member to solve it. You earned 25 points for solving this.
[37] Thanks for your help! Just noticed new fruit for me tonight!
...16 minutes and 58 seconds and were the 94th... Took some time out to go do the Hypercoss, as suggested. That didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, but it was nice to have the reinforcement.
It's almost 1 an hour and a half in and I'm still in the top 100. Woot.
[37] congrats! :)
Squeaked under the wire with 96th. First time I broke 100!
[40] If you've got the correct one, there should be (a missing) one that goes with it.
Thanks [37]. I'm not a rocket scientist (... well, actually...) so please stick to common associations.
Okay, I got the odd one out, but googling "leftover item" +theme yields me nothing but tips on how to attract the leftover item.
[47] In my old paper-based dictionary (and I even bought a brand new one last year!), the leftover item has only one associated word.
Please don't be misled by the "power" of the internet; more info does not = better info!!
[48] Sorry, but shrimp didn't work.
Rocketeer, I'm not trying to be a smart aleck, as I already solved it, but can't the leftover one also be paired with (I dont want to give anything away) Mr. GW? Just askin.
Edit: Ahh.. I missed your [28]salt. Get it now.
[50] That is what got me. I hate ambiguities that can only be resolved through extreme levels of exhaustion. In fact, Google tries to autocorrect the "acceptable" one used to get the solution (and it is not found in the dictionary either) and the alternate one is correctly meshed together both in Google and in my dictionary.
That is what I was working on when I did this puzzle - no spaces in the clues. The weird thing was the item I got left over sort of worked with the theme of how the puzzle was to be solved.
Okay, finally got it with a little push from [37]. Thanks! Bummer that I got in at 103rd.
As I predicted earlier, Rocketeer, I say "that was fun!"
The "wrong" item + the bottom right clue could give you an answer for those of you who remember the controversy surrounding his election. Believe me, I tried everything having to do with that item.
Finally got it, thanks to the TG from soccer_ref (and THANKS!). However, the solution word is definitely not the first one that sprang to my mind for pairing. Maybe it depends on what part of the country you're from ...
[51] "Extreme levels of exhaustion"? Really?
[56] By exhaustion, I meant going through every possibility involving the term, not getting tired.
I'm gonna be honest, i completely messed up which things to put together. If you google buck flower, Geroge Buck Flower is person... so yeah don't combine George and Buck it's wrong... haha. I got the answer by guessing... I googled a certain picture and used an above clue and bada bing. This was rough going.
I googled vegetation + <leftover> and it popped up easily... if that helps anyone...
[53] The problem with your google assistance is that it does give it away because people can use your term and get the answer without getting to the leftover word first. EDIT: Oops. I see your comment is gone now. :)
Wow, a day later and still 170th. I was only able to get 5 of the pairs, but got the answer. Had trouble using the right word for the bovines and then I thought that was a turnip so that's why I wasn't able to get those two.
There are two pairings for the lower right, so either can be left over. Not fun if you choose the wrong one.
well I'm glad somebody said Bovines because I thought those were pigs. And Ah Yes! the propper leftover could also go with the same item as the butterfly which threw me off for a while.
Wow. Can't believe how stupid I was.. finally gave up after being sure that I couldnt' figure it out.. turned out I had the right answer all along, I just forgot to put it as alloneword I was putting a space between the 2 parts.
stupid stupid stupid. when in doubt..READ THE DIRECTIONS!
:)
If you take the leftover word and put it with "weed" instead of the correct word.....you get a plant that you can roll up and smoke.....for medicinal purposes only, of course. That's what I was sure the answer was....but no, I was wrong.
