[8] I grew up with an older brother that was a big Beach Boys fan. I heard this played over and over again on our record player. I'd never heard of Bobby Pickens until the comments here.

[8], [10] To be accurate, it was written by Bobby "Boris" Pickett and originally performed by him and the Crypt-Kickers. Theirs was the #1 hit. (The cover by the Beach Boys was never released as a single and never made the charts.)
Bobby "Boris" Pickett later hooked up with Tammy Faye Baker after the whole Jessica Hahn/PTL debacle.
I leave the monster jokes to those who remember Tammy Faye's makeup.
