The example helped figure out the axes, and after that, loved it!

Edit: to the author's credit, I notice now that the axes were explicitly clued. I also like the first part of the solution text -- didn't notice that when solving.

Looks like solves racking up quick. I hoped this one wouldn't be too much trouble.

[1] Well, I loved it. Thanks, dennishiding.

    Hmmm...Learn something new every day.

  5. FileEggmarkta on Jan 16, 2012 07:09 PM

I learned a new word! Thanks.

  6. FileCarrotengles on Jan 16, 2012 07:09 PM

    Wow! Awesome puzzle!

  7. FilePotatoGinnyjulie on Jan 16, 2012 07:09 PM

I looked at the puzzle and quietly hit the little x

  8. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Jan 16, 2012 07:11 PM

I failed to notice the birds were anything other than decoration so had to piece together the proper order. After that, I still had trouble knowing for sure which letters to use. I also decided to race over to the hyper after taking a quick look at it... :)

But I enjoyed it very much. Thanks, dennishiding!

    [8] Same here. Night all.

    Algebra 2 finally paying off.

  11. FileDuckiePatanga on Jan 16, 2012 07:19 PM

I don't get it at all.....it looks kind of like binary.....scary.

  12. Bp3Eggendel3 on Jan 17, 2012 04:17 AM

    [12] me either...good night....

    edit, thanks [12], [16]...ugh

  13. FileDuckieouredman on Jan 16, 2012 07:21 PM

Interesting, I had problems with with the 3rd axis a few times.

  14. FileCarrotcoupongrl77 on Jan 16, 2012 07:22 PM

Wow, I'm impressed! :) Thanks dennisisiding!

[12] or Trinary? (salt) TG sent. I didn't even look at or use the letter-path above the ducks.

Also... was tempted to plug answer I got into an Anagram Solver, but no need to...... just learned a new (legit) word.

  16. FileAppledyllan on Jan 16, 2012 07:31 PM

This was fun, quite liked it. Very well crafted. And I too learned a new word that I will never, ever have occasion to use.

  17. TimpaniPepperdjschwartz on Jan 16, 2012 07:31 PM

So this puzzle was 95% red herring. Blah.

  18. FileGarlicdharmaRN on Jan 16, 2012 07:33 PM

[18] It appears from the comments (re: Algebra, axes, etc...) that some people solved it the way the creator intended.... so not a Red herring, just one of 2 ways to solve...

  19. FileDuckiePatanga on Jan 16, 2012 07:35 PM

Well, some of the stuff in the puzzle is baseless.....

  20. FileAppledennishiding on Jan 16, 2012 07:36 PM

[18] Alternate solution path for those that don't like math wasn't really meant to be a herring.

Yes you can solve it with no math.

  21. FileGarlicdharmaRN on Jan 16, 2012 07:40 PM

[21] I appreciate that you created 2 solve methods.... clever *and* considerate of you, dennishiding!

  22. FileEggplantDeemiklos on Jan 16, 2012 07:46 PM

You can use math instead and ignore the axes. Convert trinary to decimal and tanga as usual.

EDIT: Hope that's not too salty--we have the 100 solves. I really liked this one. I'm glad they throw a math one in once in a while for us math junkies.

  23. FileAppledennishiding on Jan 16, 2012 07:44 PM

    [20] LOL

  24. FileCarrotcoupongrl77 on Jan 16, 2012 07:46 PM

I definitely appreciated the letter path. Much more friendly to me than the math approach.

  25. TimpaniPepperdjschwartz on Jan 16, 2012 07:51 PM

File name of the image is "file.jpg"

  26. FileGarlicdharmaRN on Jan 16, 2012 07:55 PM
  27. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Jan 16, 2012 08:35 PM

    [26] Your point is...?

  28. FilePlumdramafan on Jan 16, 2012 08:47 PM

I sort of understood the basic concept but could not quite execute it to solve, math never having been my strong suit past basic add/subtract/divide/multiply. (And sorry to be so dumb, but I couldn't even do the other thing; I kept getting lost.) So had to go a different route to get the answer, basically treating it like any cryptogram and getting some help from the internet.

  29. FilePlumRiver0040 on Jan 16, 2012 08:53 PM

Never heard of a 'trinary', just figured out the pattern and followed it. Amazing! I found the "Idiot savant" solution!

  30. TimpaniPepperdjschwartz on Jan 16, 2012 09:05 PM

[28] Sorry - Solution says "The direct method is also hinted at by the filename of the image."

  31. FilePlumRiver0040 on Jan 16, 2012 09:48 PM

what's the "filename of the image"??? I solved it by realizing the bottom part only used combinations of certain digits in certain a certain order, then played with them until I figured out the pattern, then followed the pattern. The letter and birds meant exactly nothing to me, and I haven't a clue what a "filename of an image" is.

Fun puzzle, but there wasn't anything "direct" about my method. Sorry! Next time I'll try to be more direct. Much more direct.

  32. FileSailboatdagibbs on Jan 16, 2012 10:06 PM

I got the answer. Didn't think it looked like a word. Ran the solve again, got the exact same looks like a non-word, so decided to try it, and damn but I was correct!

  33. Panda-flyGarlicpandapal on Jan 17, 2012 12:04 AM

Guess I'm too left brained. Had no problem with converting the numbers, but I have no idea as to the visual method. Makes absolutely no sense to me....

  34. FileAppledennishiding on Jan 17, 2012 01:44 AM

[28]Apparently the old trick of being able to see the filename of the image has been fixed. The hints and solution text suggest erroneously that the filename would be useful. The hint it would have provided has been well covered in the discussion though.

Now I remember why I don't stay up for when the puzzles first come out. ...off to work. <yawn>

  35. 100_1703Eggsonjahi on Jan 17, 2012 05:37 AM

[31][35] Ah, I see. Yes, they started obscuring the file names awhile ago. I, too, liked burying hints in the filenames, but apparently there were too many hypercross builders who named their images with the answer words.

  36. FilePepperChupper on Jan 17, 2012 08:06 AM

I finally got it with some educated guessing on the visual method, but I still don't get how the coordinates properly clue the letters in the fourth column.

  37. Nick_dress_blues_2Pancakesbitwisenot on Jan 17, 2012 09:11 AM

[37] Best not to think of them in "rows" or "columns", but rather as axes. Each number corresponds to movement along one of the axes. While one of the axes is in an up/down alignment, neither of the other two are in a strictly left/right alignment.

  38. Craigprof1Pearcrkalino on Jan 17, 2012 09:19 AM

Nice. I enjoyed the intended use of multiple solve methods.

  39. Mangos-big-750570Sailboatkgnanamu on Jan 17, 2012 04:09 PM

Such an elegantly created puzzle. When usage of Analytical Geometry was enough to bring a smile, along comes this discovery of an equally graceful additional solution approach to exclaim a big WOW. Made my day!

  40. Tanga_profile_photoEggWhiteKnight85 on Jan 17, 2012 04:49 PM

[37] (and others): If you print it out (or put it in Paint or whatever), and sketch in lines, you'll see that the letters are arranged into 3 square panes -- like a 3-D Tic-Tac-Toe grid.

Once you can see that grid, it should be fairly easy to see how the coordinates work, especially when you look at the sample "DUCK" coordinates.

  41. UntitledPotatoBenditlikebaker on Jan 17, 2012 05:41 PM

Both of the solve methods still don't really make much sense to me.... but i solved it anyways. bleh
