the plural held me up
[1] Me too, I'm familiar with the phrase having a singular there.
The cluing was nice though.
Holy crap it isn't taking my answer...here
CMU Class of 1988
The spelling is correct for how it is pronounced.
OMG ...
[5] That's not the plural they're referring to.
[7] Though I looked it up, and the puzzle has it correct. I've just been spelling (and pronouncing) it wrong.
[8] Yes, I did the same thing. And I am a product of that program. Still never realized there was an S in there.
[7] Ah, I see your point - I jumped to the obvious, potentially incorrect conclusion.
[10] I think the 2nd S is fairly obvious due to the spelling/pronunciation. But that first one....well, I didn't even know it was there myself. LOL
I am totally lost
Help
The first plural I got with no problem...the second one I didn't expect and had to google
*hangs head in shame*

You earned 10 points for solving this.
I am really starting to LOVE these.
I don't know if I could say this or not but it makes it so much easier when you are not using the sport being played.
I too have been saying this incorrectly (without the plural) for the last 40 years!?! Live and learn. Nice puzzle. (I was in the marching band, myself.)
Crazy puzzles here. I was never much for them and just started getting into them. I got one the other day in 3 seconds, beginners luck of course. Lol, but I can't quite get the hang of these.
Looks like a sifter or a sieve to me.
Perhaps you've been using the item to sift flour, as I was taught to do -- instead of actually using a sifter. If you do a Google Image of sifter, you'll see the object meant for sifting.
Knew the abbreviation but never knew what it stood for. Once again, Tanga teaches me something.
Last clue sucked. A bit misleading. Nothing like trying to spell it over and over in frustration. Should have probably added a + "letter" at the end.
[21] Why add a letter that is silent?
Loved this one. Very good.
Excellent puzzle. Well clued and clever
