first vowel is kind of a stretch ..... I would never start the answer with the "eh" sound.
The puzzle author must be from the northeast!

[3] I would say it's more of an "ai" versus "eh" sound (hard to describe subtle phonetics using just a could letters ... heh). Here in the Midwest people generally say it with the former, but, of course, you're supposed to pronounce it with the latter. I was fine with that phonetic stretch (probably because I'm so familiar with hearing both versions!), but having 1 and 1/2 of the first item made me think an 'S' was supposed to go on the end.
Meh. This would have been better with a plural first clue, and subtracting the entire first part pictorially.
