Gah! Spelling!!!
Nice puzzle...I really appreciate the fact that you took so much time to make this. spelling got me some
the spelling killed me!
LOL... all those E's and A's and Y's and IE's. I submitted probably 10 times before I got it right and at least 8 of those were while looking at the correct spelling on the Google results! See what trying to rush does to a person?!
spelling has me on this one.. just not getting it
Edit: Aaaack! 126
Friendly???? Just listen!
ugh....spelling....my nemesis
Spelling Spelling!!
edit: Sorry, my comment made no sense. Wasn't familiar with this phrase so I assumed it was another phrase without finishing the rebus... duh...
Why, oh why, when there are a hundred ways to spell something do puzzle makers not use letter counts?
[4] Google autocomplete worked for me. I tried once on my own (and failed), so I turned there immediately for some help (got it on my 2nd overall attempt).
Edit: Looks like [10] forgot to close their formatting with the "i" :)
'Nother Edit: Looks like [10] fixed the formatting!
Yikes, 1st I tried to solve it from the first line. Didn't even look at the second line--oops! Then, spelling really killed me. Finally got 111st (sic).
[11] You mean [10] forgot, don't you? (And if you add it to the start of yours, like I did, you can correct the mistake :). Google autocomplete worked for me too. Notice I said 8 of those misspelled submissions were with the right spelling in front of me. I kept changing a letter and then submitting without noticing that other letters were wrong too. Really pretty silly.
[10] Letter counts 1) are not in common use - they are a neat idea but so far have not caught on and often cause confusion and 2) would only have helped with the Y/IE distinction, not the EE/EA distinction.
[12] Love the "sic". :)
1st here and 6th on the OWW. Best night I've had in a long while.
[13] Yeah I noticed my own mistake and edited the reference. You must have seen my comment before I finished my ninja-edit!
Yup, I know that I could have closed the formatting myself (that was a discussion topic not that long ago). I'm just entertained by the endless formatting, it amuses me! :)
Oh, and I just used copy&paste from Google. Quicker than trying to change the mess I came up with!
Are they friendly?
That just plain sucked because of the million and 2 different ways it could be spelled...sorry, but I didn't like that one even though I knew the answer in 5 seconds, but took a couple minutes of typing to get the spelling right....
Thanks Google
...19 seconds - spelled it right first time... no google necessary. got lucky, i guess!
[15], I'm so glad that you know what [13] means, cuz i don't have an effin clue...
[19] Great job!!!!
Not crazy about the puzzles where you have to "correctly" spell nonsense words. :(
[20] If you are talking about who forgot what, we were talking about the formatting of italics in the comment above bitwisenot's, which has since been corrected. That's all [15] was referring to in [13] - well, he also referred to my autocomplete comment, but that doesn't seem confusing. I had the right answer in front of me but still couldn't get all the letters right.
If you are referring to "letter counts", duckpond (I think it was him) once floated the idea of providing the letter counts for each word in a Crypto somewhere in your puzzle to help people get to the answer easier.
[22] You should really edit your post. But I typed the wrong combo in and while my autocomplete was wrong, the first hit had it right, despite me starting off wrong.
In spite of the spelling difficulties, the clues were excellent.
Ive got nothing. I can't imagine what else it would be, but I can't get the spelling so heck with it... google didn't help depsite the attempts from the comments above. Maybe my 3 year old knows how to spell it.
Okay, replacing [22]: There are 3 good ways to spell the first word and 6 good ways to spell the second word, and Google autocomplete will finish what you started. But that still doesn't mean you've got the "right" spelling for this puzzle, even if you cut and paste. Even using Google, with several combinations, it still took awhile to come up with the "correct" answer. I'm obviously not the only person who had a problem with the spelling.
Could Tanga just quit featuring puzzles with multiple valid spellings (where there's nothing in the puzzle to clarify)? That's just frustrating.
yeah, but with such obvious clues, the challenge has to be somewhere. today the challenge was in the spelling. cute
Never heard of this, and somehow managed to spell it on the first try. Probably would have been more satisfying if it was familiar... Thanks for the puzzle nonetheless :)
[26] At the risk of us together beating a dead horse, I'd say there are only 4 good ways to spell the first, second, and last words - the same 4 ways. You can spell those words with EE or EA and then Y or IE.
For those of you still struggling with spelling, there are no Y's in the answer. And there's only one A (in the last word).
And while it's kind of a tedious challenge, I agree with [27] that spelling was the primary challenge in this one.
I just don't understand basing puzzles on made-up nonsense phrases that don't have any accepted spelling. I don't really come here to see how good I am at using google. Alas, more and more of these puzzles seem to focus on exactly that.
You solved this puzzle in 6 seconds and were the 461st Tanga member to solve it.
Got it, finally! Not complaining that I've never heard this, just wondering if anyone else has heard this used in the manner that the answer explains?
The value of solving a Tanga puzzle is not sufficient to get me to figure out how YOU choose to spell nonce words. This is not a good puzzle.
[32] It could be a generational thing -- i.e., who's old enough to have watched this on TV when it originally was aired. Those that remember the original airing likely would smile when hearing it. Others may recall Johnny Carson doing something similar.
Even though it took over 2 minutes for me to input the correct answer, I still say this puzzle is the bee's knees.
I agree with everyone about the spelling on this one and also the clue "E=I" should have been "e=i" otherwise it looks like a lowercase "L"
Spelling. I know I got phrase right. I Refuse to stress myself by trying to figure out how to spell it. I checked Google and typed in exactly how it came up. still did not work. So, I'm done. Not worth it.
knew the phrase.. just wasn't about to try to guess the spelling that barg used :) No way , no how, i"d like to keep my sanity!!! *grin* (I'd always spelled the words with the "Y"'s.. that's Y it threw meeee.) :)
